The generic term 'reflex sympathetic dystrophy' describes a clinical syndrome which sometimes develops after traumata at the extremities with lesions of nerves or --more rarely--after other events. The syndrome consists of the following components: pain (hyperpathia, allodynia), trophic changes of skin and deep tissues, dysregulation of sweating and cutaneous blood flow of the extremity concerned. It is assumed that all symptoms are produced by abnormal sympathetic activity. Interruption of the sympathetic activity to the affected extremity abolishes most of the pain and may lead to remission

Cockayne syndrome is an autosomal recessive disease, which includes as major features motor and mental retardation (beginning in the second year), microcephaly, ataxia, retinal degeneration and pigmentation, cataracts, progeroid features, intracranial calcification, hypogonadism, and growth retardation. Statistical analysis of the dimensions of microdissected eccrine sweat glands (duct length, coil volume, ratio of coil volume to duct length, and axis ratio of coil) was performed for several diseases (cystic fibrosis of the pancreas, Werdnig-Hoffmann disease, tetralogy of Fallot, chronic renal disease, and trisomies 13, 18, and 21) using both individual and grouped age-matched control patients. Hidradenitis suppurativa is an infrequent inflammatory process that begins as an infection in the apocrine sweat glands. From an initial focus, the infection spreads to involve other tissues of the skin and adjacent structures. When inadequately treated or neglected, the disease becomes chronic with suppuration, sinus formation, invasion of adjacent organs, and occasional malignant degeneration. Skin biopsies from 20 patients with indeterminate leprosy were studied histopathologically. The most common clinical manifestation of the disease was a hypopigmented macule. In most cases, 5% to 10% of the dermis was occupied by the infiltrate. Autopsy studies of two infants, one a newborn, the other 4 months old, revealed massive amounts of iron in lysosomes of hepatocytes and pancreatic acinar cells. We describe our experience in the use of a Silastic foam dressing in 17 patients undergoing radical excision of hidradenitis suppurativa whose wounds were allowed to heal by granulation. Axillary excisions were carried out in 9 patients and perineal excisions in 8 patients. The technique permits adequate excision of the disease and results in a cosmetically acceptable scar, superior to that obtained by skin grafting and with little limitation of movement. A case of squamous cell carcinoma arising in hydradenitis suppurativa of over 20 years duration is described. Only 6 other cases are reported in the literature. Multiple sites of origin of malignancy is suspected in this case. Wide-spread bone metastases resulted in severe hypercalcemia. Palliation was obtained for a short period following chemotherapy and Adriamycin and Bleomycin. Autopsy studies showed metastatic tumor in almost all the organs of the body.

Ten patients with traumatic alopecia (trichotillomania) were being investigated histologically and, in five of them, hairs from the affected scalp area were plucked out for direct microscopic examination. The clinicopathologic findings of 13 patients having extramammary Paget's disease of the vulva are discussed with emphasis on its histogenesis and biological behavior. For the purpose of study and assessment of prognosis, these cases were divided into two groups, those with an underlying invasive cutaneous adnexal adenocarcinoma, and those lacking an underlying invasive lesion. Five cases of extramammary Paget's disease of the vulva were studied by histologic, ultrastructural, and immunologic methods. In one of these cases, the associated invasive adnexal carcinoma was studied in a similar fashion. In all five cases, carcinoma-in situ of the sweat glands was observed. In addition to the classical description of involvement of the cervical sympathetic in low root lesions (Claude Bernard-Horner syndrome), other sympathetic syndromes have been described accompanying the motor and sensory changes in obstetrical paralysis of the upper limb. Loss of sweat secretion can be deomonstrated by electrical skin resistance tests, and the authors describe their apparatus and method of investigating this in the newborn. Although sweat secretion is often scanty in the newborn, it can be enhanced with appropriate techniques, particularly in the areas richer in sweat glands.

Functional studies of the pancreas and parotid glands are reported in 17 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
