The authors report eleven cases of multiple auto-immune syndrome, concerning a total of 15 different auto-immune diseases. This study suggests that auto-immune thyroid disorders (Graves' disease or hypothyroidism resulting from Hashimoto's thyroiditis) are a common feature of multiple auto-immune syndromes, while antithyroid antibodies are constant among our patients. Sjögren's syndrome is also very prevalent, and seems to be non-randomly associated with auto-immune thyroid disorders, a fact which suggests common aetiological factors. Among other auto-immune disorders, the antiphospholipid syn

I clinically studied 905 patients with alopecia areata (AA) who visited the Department of Dermatology, College of Medicine, Chung Ang University, from January of 1982 to February of 1994. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the clinical manifestations and compare the effects of treatment with intralesional injection of triamcinolone acetonide suspension and immunotherapy with dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) or diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP). The results were as follows: 1) The incidence of AA among all out-patients (59,970) was 1.5% (905 cases), and the ratio of males to females was 1.3:1 (512

Thirty-three patients with the depigmentation disorder vitiligo were successfully treated with a new topical application of pseudocatalase, calcium and short-term UVB light exposure. First repigmentation occurred in the majority of cases after 2-4 months. Complete repigmentation on the face and dorsum of the hands appeared in 90% of the group. In all patients, active depigmentation was arrested. None of them developed new lesions during treatment. No recurrence of the disease was observed during a 2-year follow-up. The rationale for this pilot study originated from a recent understanding of vi

Endocrinologic disorders occasionally manifest themselves by cutaneous abnormalities. In some instances, these alterations are the most prominent complaints of the patient. It is then important that the physician is able to recognize them as the manifestation of the endocrinologic disease. In this review, we describe the main cutaneous lesions occurring in endocrinopathy, like troubles of the skin pigmentation [melasma, acanthosis nigricans, Addison's disease, Cushing's syndrome, vitiligo], generalized or pretibial myxedema, acne and androgen excess, hirsutism. Where known, we try to approach

Therapy with khellin and UVA irradiation (KUVA) is a therapeutic approach to vitiligo. Little is known about the photobiological properties of khellin and its long-term side-effects after prolonged administration. A 47-year-old woman suffering from acral vitiligo since the age of 3 is reported, who developed blisters on hands and fingers during KUVA-therapy. Laboratory findings were consistent with hereditary porphyria cutanea tarda. Electron microscopic examination of a blister revealed clefting below the basement membrane. It is proposed that khellin in some way provoked the porphyria cutane

PURPOSE: Long-term treatment with interferon alfa (IFN alpha) can produce or exacerbate immune-mediated complications (IMC). The purpose of this study was to analyze the experience with IMC and unusual complications in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) undergoing IFN alpha treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The occurrence of IMC and unusual complications was evaluated in patients with Philadelphia chromosome (Ph)-positive CML.
RESULTS: Well-documented and clinically evident complications developed in 35 patients after a median of 14 months of IFN alpha treatment. These included

In patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) the development of autoimmune diseases, while not life threatening, is an interesting phenomenon that may result from immune dysfunction or from B cell infection by HIV, Epstein-Barr virus, or other unknown viruses. Vitiligo and alopecia areata are among the autoimmune diseases that have been reported in 11 patients infected with HIV. We describe a 47-year-old man who had vitiligo and alopecia areata approximately 2 years after testing positive for HIV antibodies.

A 50-year-old female had vitiligo and alopecia universalis. She developed pemphigus vulgaris with a history of recent increase in the size of the vitiligo patch. Corticosteroid therapy controlled the pemphigus vulgaris, halted the extension of the vitiligo lesion and promoted regrowth of hair. The coexistence of these three diseases in the same patient lends credence to the contention that autoimmunity plays a role in the pathogenesis of these diseases.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata is suspected to be an autoimmune disease. We studied 104 consecutive patients with alopecia areata for the presence of autoantibodies and associated autoimmune diseases.
METHODS: A detailed history and examination was carried out in all patients to look for associated atopy, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, vitiligo, lupus erythematosus, and thyroid disorders, etc. in the patients or their family members. Venous blood for estimation of fasting and postprandial blood glucose was collected in 30 patients, especially in those with family history

UNLABELLED: We describe two girls with atypical presentations of multisystem disorders due to deletions in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). One presented with painful carpopedal spasms due to hypoparathyroidism at the age of 4 years. The disease was rapidly progressive with development of truncal and limb ataxia, spastic paraparesis, muscle weakness and wasting, pigmentary retinal degeneration and sensorineural hearing loss. She had short stature and vitiligo patches, hirsutism, anaemia, diabetes mellitus and exocrine pancreatic dysfunction. The other girl presented at the age of 6 years with polydi

PURPOSE: To determine the mechanism of photoreceptor cell death in the vitiligo mouse, a model of retinal degeneration in which the genetic defect is not retina specific but is instead caused by single point mutation in the microphthalmia (mi) gene that codes for a basic helix-loop-helix DNA transcription factor.
METHODS: Detection of apoptotic cells was performed in fixed retinal tissue using the TUNEL assay in animals 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 16, 32, 40, and 52 weeks. Electron microscopic analysis was used to confirm the morphologic hallmarks of apoptosis, and Southern blot analysis was used to detec

A brick red powder, used by a 'native physician' (a practitioner of traditional medicine in Oman) to treat a female patient for vitiligo, has been analysed by X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (S.E.M.). It was found to be a mixture of cinnabar (HgS) and calomel (Hg2Cl2). Symptoms of acute mercury poisoning resulted from the patient repeatedly breathing in elemental mercury vapour after this brick red powder and elemental mercury encased in a lime, were thrown on an open fire in a closed room. The patient also presented with central nervous system toxicity which improved

Precancerous conditions of vulva are diseases which can exceed into carcinomas and are called preblastomatoses. These are all sorts of various diseases: intraepithelial vulvar neoplasias, Paget's disease, precancerous circumscript melanosis, malignant melanoma of the first Clark level, verrucous type of leukoplakia, vulvar dystrophy with atypia, giant Buschke-Lowenstein's condyloma and chronic skin damages. Vulvar dystrophy belongs to medical terminology since 1966 and includes a group of diseases known as leukoplakia and kraurosis, primary vulvar atrophy and hyperplastic vulvitis. According t

The patient is a 63-year-old Chinese man who presented with tetraparesis and urinary incontinence. The initial diagnosis was cord compression from cervical spondylosis. The patient relapsed 3 months after cervical laminectomy. The transverse myelitis picture, left optic atrophy and suggestive brainstem evoked potentials led to treatment of a presumptive demyelinating process. The presence of vitiligo, however, led to detection of high titers of antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and presence of anti-nonhistone antibodies. The patient was then diagnosed to have a lupus (SLE)-like disease, which has n

BACKGROUND: Detection of differences in color is necessary for an automatic diagnostic system for skin lesions.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine whether color analysis of an image obtained with a videomicroscope can be used as a key to distinguish basic skin lesions.
METHODS: We carried out quantitative color analyses of nine kinds of natural or artificial skin lesions. After images of the lesion and adjacent normal skin were obtained, the difference in the mean quasiabsorbance (logarithm of the inverse reflectance) values between the two were examined in each color band o

Among numerous etiologies for hypoparathyroidism, one of the inheritable forms of hypoparathyroidism, called polyglandular autoimmune syndrome, appears as a complex of hypofunction of several endocrine glands, candidiasis, pernicious anemia and vitiligo. Idiopathic hypoparathyroidism in the PGA syndrome typically presents by 20 years of age. Among the three major components of the PGAI syndrome, candidiasis is usually the first manifestation. Hypoparathyroidism almost invariably precedes the onset of Addison's disease. One should keep in mind that Addison's disease can mask the presence of hyp

Skin diseases in black children differ because of pigment lability, fibroblastic activity, and folliular predominance. Normal findings may include Futcher's or Voight's line, linea alba, Mongolian spot, and pigmentation of the mucous membranes and nails. Disorders that are more frequent in black children are transient neonatal pustular melanosis, infantile acropustulosis, tinea capitis, pomade acne, traction alopecia, and proximal trichorrhexis nodosa. Disorders that vary in appearance but not incidence include pityriasis alba, vitiligo, and alopecia areata. A knowledge of this helps in the tr
