BACKGROUND: Lichenoid granulomatous dermatitis (LGD) is an uncommon reaction pattern for which clinical correlates can be difficult to establish. LGD combines vacuolar degeneration with variable types of granulomas.
OBJECTIVE: To determine clinical correlates of LGD.
METHODS: The laboratory information systems at the University of Florida, the Medical College of Wisconsin, and Inform Diagnostics Research Institute were queried to identify 56 cases of LGD. Cases were reviewed for information regarding eosinophils, plasma cells, deep perivascular infiltrates, granuloma subtype, parakeratosis,

Purpose: The aetiology of pigmented purpuric dermatoses is unclear. Recent studies speculate about contact sensitivity to play a role in the aetiology of the disease. In most patients, the lesions begin and stay limited on the lower extremities as textile products are in tight contact with the skin. Also, textile dyes can cause contact dermatitis of purpuric type. This study was conducted in order to understand whether the contact sensitivity plays a critical role in the aetiology of pigmented purpuric dermatoses. Materials and methods: Patients with diagnosis of pigmented purpuric dermatoses

BACKGROUND: Various pathological findings have been reported in pigmented purpuric dermatosis, but their clinical significance remains unclear.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed demographics, clinical presentations, pathological patterns and concurrent systemic diseases among biopsy-confirmed cases of pigmented purpuric dermatosis.
RESULTS: A total of 107 cases were ascertained. Five major pathological patterns were identified: lichenoid (45/107, 42.1%), perivascular (40/107, 37.4%), interface (11/107, 10.3%), spongiotic (7/107, 6.5%) and granulomatous (4/107, 3.7%). Lymphocytic vasculiti

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disorder with cutaneous involvement with myriad of morphological presentations, often leading to diagnostic dilemma. We report a case of 31-year-old male with peripheral arterial disease who presented with three morphological forms of sarcoidosis simultaneously, namely, papular, psoriasiform, and pigmented purpuric dermatosis-like lesions. Dermatoscopy of cutaneous lesions showed yellow-orange globules, red dots, linear vessels, and white crystalline structures depending on the clinical forms. Histopathology of all three morphological types of skin lesions demonstr

Lichen aureus is a rare pigmented purpuric dermatosis. We present an unusual case because of the pediatric age and the great number of lesions with zosteriform distribution. He is a 10-yearold boy, with a brownish, smaller than 1 cm, sharp edges, lichenified surface, asymptomatic macule, over the inner aspect of the left leg with a zosteriform distribution. The histology showed a band-like inflammatory infiltrate in the superficial dermis, composed of lymphocytes, histiocytes, erythrocytes and haemosiderin. He was diagnosed with zosteriform lichen aureus and was treated with topical mometasone

UNLABELLED: Pigmented purpuric dermatosis is a chronic benign skin disorder of unknown aetiology. Although there are several other potential cofactors, drugs are the most frequent cause. This paper describes the case of a 71-year-old woman who was admitted in the emergency department with skin lesions on the lower extremities, characteristics of Schamberg's disease. After a medical study and treatment, it was concluded that the lesions were caused by amlodipine administration. To the authors' knowledge, only one previous case describing an association between this disease and amlodipine admini

Most emergencies in dermatology comprise a variety of entities with a usually benign course. However, vasculopathies and vasculitis are not common, but they could represent respectively 1.9% and 4.4% of these entities according to some studies of Emergency Dermatology Department. They become an important disease which has to be identified early to establish appropriate management and treatment. Some of them are well known, such as the leukocitoclastic vasculitis, Schölein-Henoch, panarteritis nodosa, antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody associated vasculitis, giant cell arteritis, cryoglobuline

Granulomatous pigmented purpuric dermatosis (GPPD) is a rare histologic variant of pigmented purpuric dermatosis (PPD). It includes classic histology changes of PPD with superimposed granulomas. This variant is thought to be associated with hyperlipidemia and is found predominantly in individuals in the Far East; however, a review of the literature that included 26 documented cases of GPPD revealed these associations might be becoming less clear. We report a case of GPPD in an elderly white man who had an eruption involving the majority of the lower legs.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this report is to demonstrate the clinical effect of Korean medicine treatment for pigmented purpuric dermatosis (PPD).
METHODS: Five cases of PPD with skin purpura and blood heat due to blood deficiency were evaluated. All patients had been in a chronic disease state for at least 1 year. The treatment consisted only of the Korean herbal medicine Gami-Samultang (GS). The degree of symptoms that the patients experienced when they first visited our clinic was set at a visual analog scale (VAS) score of 10.
RESULTS: After treatment, body purpura disappeared in all cas

Cutaneous collagenous vasculopathy (CCV) is a distinct, rare, and underdiagnosed condition. We report a case of CCV in a 50-year-old woman presenting as asymptomatic, erythematous to hyperpigmented nonblanchable macules over both the lower extremities. The clinical differential diagnosis of the lesions was pigmented purpuric dermatoses (Schamberg's purpura) and cutaneous small vessel vasculitis. Histology of the lesions revealed dilated superficial dermal vessels with abundant pink hyaline material in the vessel wall, which stained with periodic acid Schiff stain. The patient was diagnosed as

Lichen aureus (LA) is a rare variant of pigmented purpuric dermatosis. There are few Chinese cases of LA documented in the literature in English. We aimed to investigate the clinical and histopathological characteristics of LA in a series of Chinese patients. This was a retrospective monocentric study conducted in the Department of Dermatology, Peking Union Medical College Hospital. A total of 25 patients were included in the study; 15 male and 10 female patients. Unilateral distribution of the lesions was found in 88.0% of the patients, while bilateral distribution was found in 12.0%. A segme

Pigmented purpuric dermatoses (PPD), a group of vascular disorders with variable clinical picture is reported in all races and age groups with a male predilection. There are reports of mycosis fungoides manifesting as pigmented purpura as well as progression of PPD to cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. The diagnostic dilemma is compounded by PPD manifesting histological similarity to mycosis fungoides. Currently, it is believed that PPD with monoclonal T-cell population is more likely to progress to malignancy. We report a 31-year-old male patient who presented with the lichenoid clinical variant of P

BACKGROUND:: Pigmented purpuric dermatosis is a chronic skin disorder of unknown aetiology characterised by symmetrical petechial and pigmented macules, often confined to the lower limbs. The aetiology of pigmented purpuric dermatosis is unknown. Dermatoscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that allows the visualisation of morphological features invisible to the naked eye; it combines a method that renders the corneal layer of the skin translucent with an optical system that magnifies the image projected onto the retina.
OBJECTIVES:: The aim of this study is to investigate the dermatos

Lichen aureus (LA) is a variant of pigmented purpuric dermatosis that is characterized clinically by rust macules, papules or plaques, mainly on the legs. In some cases, LA can be difficult to be distinguished from nummular eczema (NE) with the naked eye. Dermoscopy can be applied to skin lesions, revealing additional features that can be highly valuable for correct diagnosis. This study was conducted to investigate characteristic dermoscopic findings of LA and to identify distinctive features that can differentiate it from NE. Fourteen LA patients and 14 NE patients diagnosed by skin biopsy w

Granulomatous pigmented purpuric dermatosis (PPD) is a rare and poorly recognized histological variant of PPD, which commonly affects the distal extremities of mainly Far East Asian patients. Many of the reported cases are associated with hyperlipidemia or other associated systemic derangements. The authors hereby describe an additional case of granulomatous PPD affecting a 56-year-old Caucasian woman presenting unusually as a solitary lesion confined to the lower back. The report also describes dermoscopic findings, summarizes clinicopathological features of all the cases published till date,

Pigmentary purpuras (PPs) are a group of chronic disorders of unknown origin seldom described in children. With this study we sought to better characterize PP eruptions, including clinical evolution and management. A retrospective chart review from 2003 to 2013 querying characteristics of children with a biopsy-proven diagnosis of PP in the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Ste-Justine dermatology clinic (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) was performed. Follow-up was obtained through telephone interviews. Descriptive statistical analysis was used. Of the 17 subjects, 8 were male and the mean age of ons

Sarcoidosis is a chronic multisystem granulomatous disease of unknown origin. Recently, a purpuric variant of cutaneous sarcoidosis resembling pigmented purpuric dermatosis (PPD) has been documented. Herein, we describe another unusual case with clinical features mimicking PPD, characterized by brownish macules and flat-topped papules with a slightly purpuric component on the legs and dorsum of the feet and histopathological features consistent with sarcoidosis. We designated this unusual clinical presentation as "PPD-like sarcoidosis".
