As an increasing number of COVID-19 cases, there were changes in the number of patients who attended the dermatology outpatient clinics. We aimed to investigate the change profiles of dermatologic diseases in the first and second months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey by comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year. The total number and diagnosis of patients, who attended a tertiary care hospital for the dermatology outpatient clinic between 1 April 2020 and 31 May 2020, were included in this study. These data were compared with the corresponding period of the previous year.

Ichthyosis – also called fish scale disease – is a group of skin diseases, which are characterised by xerosis and scaling. Most commonly, the diseases are genetically inherited, but an acquired type also exists. Ichthyosis vulgaris (IV), is the most common type, affecting 1:250 individuals. Diagnosing IV can be challenging, because its clinical features are subject to great variation, ranging from mild cases with slight xerosis to severe cases with marked scaling and formation of fissures. In this review, IV and its most relevant differential diagnoses, X-linked ichthyosis, autosomal recessive

Skin diseases represent the second most common paraneoplastic manifestations after endocrine disorders. Paraneoplastic dermatoses may arise as the first clinical sign of occult malignancies, or manifest during the course of a previously diagnosed neoplasm. Dermatoses belonging to the group of obligate paraneoplastic syndromes manifest only in the presence of underlying malignancies. Other skin diseases may be associated with malignancy in a subset of patients.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common multifactorial skin disorder favoring the scalp, ears, face, and central chest. We present a case of an elderly woman with new-onset severe seborrheic dermatitis with massive facial hyperkeratosis mimicking ichthyosis. Clinicians should be aware of rare presentations of common conditions and should screen for associated medical comorbidities in new-onset severe skin conditions.

Porokeratosis is an uncommon cutaneous condition with multiple clinical variants that is defined by round patches with a raised, fine scaling border. Punctate porokeratosis is a rare variant of porokeratosis that is characterized by elevated, seed-like lesions of the palms and soles. While variants of porokeratosis may be associated with an increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma within the lesion, punctate porokeratosis does not increase the risk of squamous cell carcinoma. However, punctate porokeratosis may mimic other dermatoses affecting the palms and soles including spiny keratoderma,

BACKGROUND: Aged long-term care receivers are affected by various adverse skin conditions like pressure ulcers, incontinence-associated dermatitis, dryness, intertrigo, and many more. Prevention of these skin problems and the provision of general hygiene and skin care activities are key areas of nursing practice. Numerous condition-specific guidelines are available and are implemented separately. On the other hand, there is huge overlap in terms of etiology, pathogenesis, and prevention of the skin conditions mentioned above. This leads to fragmented practice neglecting shared etiologies and p

Dear Editor, It is not unusual for patients with renal insufficiency to develop skin pathologies. There are reports in the literature of increased incidence of calciphylaxis, pruritus, perforating dermatoses, and porphyria cutanea tarda in this patient population (1). Although it is quite rare, Grover's disease (GD) has been reported in several patients with renal insufficiency, but only once in a renal transplant recipient (2). The disease follows three patterns: persistently pruritic, transient eruptive, or a chronic asymptomatic course (3). Common risk factors concomitant with disease preva

BACKGROUND: Xerosis cutis of the feet is one of the most common skin conditions among type 2 diabetics. Whether skin dryness among diabetic patients is different from 'general' skin dryness is unclear. The overall aim was to compare the structure, function and molecular markers of dry and cracked foot skin between diabetics and non-diabetics.
METHODS: The foot skin of 40 diabetics and 20 non-diabetics was evaluated. A clinical assessment of skin dryness was performed and transepidermal water loss, stratum corneum hydration, skin surface pH, epidermal thickness, skin roughness, elasticity and

BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE: Xerosis cutis (also referred to as xeroderma, dry skin, asteatosis) affects more than 10 million individuals in Germany. It is among the most common dermatological diagnoses and a cardinal symptom of many dermatological, internal and neurological diseases. Even though it has been established that basic skin care plays a significant role in the management of patients with xerosis cutis, there are as yet no evidence-based algorithms for diagnosis and treatment.
OBJECTIVE: The present position paper provides physicians across all specialties with a practical, symptom-ba

INTRODUCTION: Purpuric drug eruption (PDE) is an uncommon, clinically distinct side effect of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Unlike acneiform eruption, which arises from hair follicles mainly in the head and neck area, PDE starts from xerosis cutis, primarily in the lower extremities and is not associated with hair follicles. Herein, we report 3 cases of 3 patients who had received EGFR inhibitor and were hospitalized for PDE later. The cases were characterized by painful late-onset palpable purpura with identifiable bacterial pathogens.
DIAGNOSIS: The

BACKGROUND: In aged nursing care receivers, the prevalence of adverse skin conditions such as xerosis cutis, intertrigo, pressure ulcers or skin tears is high. Adequate skin care strategies are an effective method for maintaining and enhancing skin health and integrity in this population.
OBJECTIVES: The objective was to summarize the empirical evidence about the effects and effectiveness of non-drug topical skin care interventions to promote and to maintain skin integrity and skin barrier function in the aged, to identify outcome domains and outcome measurement instruments in this field.

A variety of cutaneous abnormalities can be seen in patients with malignant diseases, some of which are infectious, with others representing direct involvement of the skin by the underlying disorder. Yet another group of lesions can be regarded as associated markers of the malignant process, and, as such, are termed "paraneoplastic." This review considers the latter collection of conditions, grouping them by the generic type of malignancy that is usually linked to the paraneoplasia. Some of the processes show a predominant association with alimentary tract malignancies (acanthosis nigricans, a

Various specific skin alterations can occur in patients with malignant diseases. If these skin diseases occur as associated symptoms of a malignant process, they are called paraneoplastic. In this overview, obligate and frequent facultative paraneoplastic skin diseases are assigned according to the triggering type of malignancy. Some of the processes predominantly show a link with malignant diseases of the digestive tract, e.g. acanthosis nigricans, florid cutaneous papillomatosis, necrolytic migratory erythema, Leser-Trélat syndrome, palmoplantar keratoderma, panniculitis and pityriasis rubra

Acquired ichthyosis is an uncommon disorder of cornification. It characteristically presents as symmetric scaling of the skin on the trunk and extensor surfaces of the extremities. It is clinically and histologically similar to ichthyosis vulgaris; however, acquired ichthyosis develops later in life and has been associated with various malignancies, infections, medications, autoimmune diseases, metabolic disorders, and malnutrition. We describe a case of a 35-year-old woman with active pulmonary tuberculosis and a history of breast cancer who presented with a several-month history of a widespr

Dear Editor, Lymphomatoid papulosis (LP) is a chronic, recurrent, usually self-limited papulonecrotic or papulonodular skin disease, which belongs to the group of primary cutaneous CD30+ lymphoproliferative disorders (1). Three main histological subtypes of LP have been recognized: type A (histiocytic), type B (mycosis fungoides-like), and type C (anaplastic large cell lymphoma-like). Recently, new histologic LP variants classified as type D (CD8-positive, cytotoxic form) and type E (angioinvasive form) have also been described. The etiology of LP has not been determined to date (2-4). Herein

BACKGROUND: Porokeratosis is associated with mevalonate pathway gene mutations. Therapeutic options are few and often limited in efficacy. We hypothesized that topical therapy that aims to replenish cholesterol, an essential mevalonate pathway end-product, and block the accumulation of mevalonate pathway toxic metabolites could alleviate porokeratosis.
OBJECTIVE: To study the efficacy of topical cholesterol/lovastatin in different variants of porokeratosis.
METHODS: We enrolled a series of 5 porokeratosis patients,1 with disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis, 2 with porokeratosis pa

Atopic eczema is a chronic recurrent inflammatory skin disease characterized by intensive pruritus and a high burden of disease. Based on a genetically determined skin barrier dysfunction, xerosis cutis and a tendency towards microbial skin infections are the leading clinical features. Mild and moderate disease manifestations are common, and usually treated with topical agents only. Treatment concepts are usually based on a combination of (i) topical basic therapy consisting of skin cleansing and barrier stabilizing emollients and (ii) topical anti-inflammatory therapy of visible skin lesions
