Optimization of Basic Emollient Therapy for the Management of Xerosis Cutis.

Topical emollients are the mainstay of basic therapy for managing xerosis cutis (dry skin). In general, most emollient formulations are safe and effective for xerosis cutis and diseases associated with dry skin; however, several other factors can vary widely between products, influence patient adherence, and ultimately affect treatment success. This article reviews key practical and clinical considerations when prescribing emollients for xerosis cutis and discusses strategies to optimize treatment and clinical outcomes for these patients. Although the optimal quantity and frequency of emollien

Basic Emollients for Xerosis Cutis Not Associated With Atopic Dermatitis: A Review of Clinical Studies.

Xerosis cutis (dry skin) is a common dermatological condition that occurs when the water-holding or barrier functions of the skin are impaired. In addition to external triggers, xerosis cutis may be caused by endogenous factors (e.g., aging) or present as a symptom of other diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, ichthyosis, and diabetes. Basic emollients restore skin hydration and barrier function through the biophysical properties of their non-active constituents and are routinely recommended for treating xerosis cutis and diseases associated with dry skin. As newer "emollients plus"

Health-related quality of life and symptom burden in patients with melanoma during and after immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy - a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with melanoma under immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy (ICI) under routine conditions and in survivorship is insufficient due to the absence of data and therapy-specific instruments in clinical trials. This pilot study aimed to collect and compare data on symptom burden and HRQoL in patients during and after ICI therapy. The benefit of a treatment-/disease-specific item list compared to a general-oncologic HRQoL instrument was examined. The results are intended to be used for planning a longitudinal study. METHODS:

Clinical dermatoendocrinology: saving lives by looking at the skin.

The separation of the interior from the exterior environment through the skin was fundamental for the evolutionary progression from prevertebrates into vertebrates. The development of the skin also established an internal environment controlled by hormones. The skin is influenced by different hormones; it is also the largest endocrine organ, producing several hormones. Skin inspections often save lives from skin cancer but can also diagnose potentially deadly endocrine diseases. The objectives of this review were to describe the emergence and definition of dermatoendocrinology and to focus on

The first year of treatment with selumetinib for NF1-related plexiform neurofibroma is medically challenging in real-life settings.

BACKGROUND: Plexiform neurofibromas (PNFs) occur in 20-50 % of NF1 patients and can alter skin appearance and/or invade adjacent structures. These tumors grow rapidly in childhood, leading to significant morbidity. Surgical treatment is recommended as first-line therapy, but complete resection is not always possible, and the risk of recurrence is high. Selumetinib is a selective inhibitor of MEK protein kinases that has been shown to reduce PNF tumor volume. It has been approved as monotherapy for the treatment of symptomatic inoperable PNF in children aged over 3 years. The aim of our study w

Psychosocial Burden in People with Atopic Dermatitis: Effects of a Substance-Free Basic Skincare in a Randomized Health Care Study.

INTRODUCTION: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a physical, emotional, and social burden for patients. Most suffer from itching, pain, and dry skin as well as sleep disturbances, experienced stigmatization, anxiety, or depression. Therefore, it is important to consider the psychosocial well-being and also stigmatization in the treatment of people with AD. The aims of this study were to compare clinical and psychosocial parameters between patients with a different severity of AD and to analyse the effect of an omega-6-fatty-acid-skin therapy. METHODS: Adult patients with clinically confirmed AD were a

Skin health of community-living older people: a scoping review.

The population of older people is steadily increasing and the majority live at home. Although the home and community are the largest care settings worldwide, most of the evidence on dermatological care relates to secondary and tertiary care. The overall aims were to map the available evidence regarding the epidemiology and burden of the most frequent skin conditions and regarding effects of screening, risk assessment, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of the most frequent skin conditions in older people living in the community. A scoping review was conducted. MEDLINE, Embase and Epistemoniko

Effectiveness of topical hyaluronic acid of different molecular weights in xerosis cutis treatment in elderly: a double-blind, randomized controlled trial.

Dry skin is a common dermatological condition that frequently affects the elderly. A contributing cause to dry skin is a reduced concentration of hyaluronic acid (HA) in both the epidermis and dermis. The effectiveness of moisturizer containing HA as a therapy for dry skin is impacted by its specific molecular weight. Low molecular weight HA (LMWHA) is believed to be more effective in replenishing skin hydration in aging skin compared to High Molecular Weight HA (HMWHA) due to its ability to penetrate the stratum corneum. However, there is a lack of clinical research supporting this claim. A d

Chronic Pruritus Alleviation in the Elderly Through Drug-Free Autophagy Activation by Magnetized Saline Water: A Case Series.

Chronic pruritus is a common and distressing condition in the elderly population, frequently associated with various underlying systemic diseases and age-related skin changes. Conventional treatments, such as emollients and moisturizers, may not invariably provide adequate relief. Magnetized saline water has previously been shown to activate autophagy, a cellular process involved in maintaining skin barrier function, reducing inflammaging, and modulating neuropathic pain. This case series investigated the efficacy of a topical serum containing magnetized saline water in managing chronic prurit

Comprehensive Assessment of Dermatologic and Dysmorphic Manifestations in Patients With Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS), a common chromosomal anomaly caused by trisomy of chromosome 21, is characterized by a broad spectrum of phenotypic characteristics across multiple organ systems, including cardiac defects and leukemia. Dermatological findings are prevalent among individuals with DS; however, these issues are frequently underrecognized and inadequately researched, resulting in a significant gap in the provision of comprehensive healthcare strategies. Given the increased life expectancy of patients with DS and delayed manifestation of many dermatoses, physicians are increasingly
