Enhancing SKIN health and safety in aged CARE (SKINCARE Trial): a study protocol for an exploratory cluster-randomized pragmatic trial.

BACKGROUND: Aged long-term care receivers are affected by various adverse skin conditions like pressure ulcers, incontinence-associated dermatitis, dryness, intertrigo, and many more. Prevention of these skin problems and the provision of general hygiene and skin care activities are key areas of nursing practice. Numerous condition-specific guidelines are available and are implemented separately. On the other hand, there is huge overlap in terms of etiology, pathogenesis, and prevention of the skin conditions mentioned above. This leads to fragmented practice neglecting shared etiologies and p

Grover's Disease in a Kidney Transplant Recipient.

Dear Editor, It is not unusual for patients with renal insufficiency to develop skin pathologies. There are reports in the literature of increased incidence of calciphylaxis, pruritus, perforating dermatoses, and porphyria cutanea tarda in this patient population (1). Although it is quite rare, Grover's disease (GD) has been reported in several patients with renal insufficiency, but only once in a renal transplant recipient (2). The disease follows three patterns: persistently pruritic, transient eruptive, or a chronic asymptomatic course (3). Common risk factors concomitant with disease preva

Comparing skin characteristics and molecular markers of xerotic foot skin between diabetic and non-diabetic subjects: An exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Xerosis cutis of the feet is one of the most common skin conditions among type 2 diabetics. Whether skin dryness among diabetic patients is different from 'general' skin dryness is unclear. The overall aim was to compare the structure, function and molecular markers of dry and cracked foot skin between diabetics and non-diabetics. METHODS: The foot skin of 40 diabetics and 20 non-diabetics was evaluated. A clinical assessment of skin dryness was performed and transepidermal water loss, stratum corneum hydration, skin surface pH, epidermal thickness, skin roughness, elasticity and

Diagnosis and treatment of xerosis cutis - a position paper.

BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE: Xerosis cutis (also referred to as xeroderma, dry skin, asteatosis) affects more than 10 million individuals in Germany. It is among the most common dermatological diagnoses and a cardinal symptom of many dermatological, internal and neurological diseases. Even though it has been established that basic skin care plays a significant role in the management of patients with xerosis cutis, there are as yet no evidence-based algorithms for diagnosis and treatment. OBJECTIVE: The present position paper provides physicians across all specialties with a practical, symptom-ba

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor induced purpuric drug eruption: Three case reports.

INTRODUCTION: Purpuric drug eruption (PDE) is an uncommon, clinically distinct side effect of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors. PATIENT CONCERNS: Unlike acneiform eruption, which arises from hair follicles mainly in the head and neck area, PDE starts from xerosis cutis, primarily in the lower extremities and is not associated with hair follicles. Herein, we report 3 cases of 3 patients who had received EGFR inhibitor and were hospitalized for PDE later. The cases were characterized by painful late-onset palpable purpura with identifiable bacterial pathogens. DIAGNOSIS: The

[Topical therapy for atopic eczema].

Atopic eczema is a chronic recurrent inflammatory skin disease characterized by intensive pruritus and a high burden of disease. Based on a genetically determined skin barrier dysfunction, xerosis cutis and a tendency towards microbial skin infections are the leading clinical features. Mild and moderate disease manifestations are common, and usually treated with topical agents only. Treatment concepts are usually based on a combination of (i) topical basic therapy consisting of skin cleansing and barrier stabilizing emollients and (ii) topical anti-inflammatory therapy of visible skin lesions

Therapy for pruritus in the elderly: a review of treatment developments.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of chronic pruritus (CP) in the general population is high and increases with age. Owing to high rates of comorbidities and polypharmacy in patients aged 65 or older, the clinical management of these patients is challenging. AREAS COVERED: In this review, the authors discuss the available therapy options for patients aged ≥ 65 with CP, including emollients for dry skin, topical therapies, phototherapy and systemic agents for CP of various origins. EXPERT OPINION: For multimorbid patients, topical substances and phototherapy constitute the best initial options. If

Topical application of Jaungo in atopic dermatitis patients: study protocol for a randomized, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common pruritic inflammatory skin disease with increasing prevalence. It can manifest with many different clinical phenotypes; however, in its chronic stage, hyperpigmentation, excoriation, lichenification, and dryness are the main symptoms. Jaungo comprises two herbs, Lithospermi radix and Angelica gigantis radix, and three carrier oils, and is an approved herbal ointment for xerosis cutis in Korea. In past studies, we demonstrated that Jaungo had anti-inflammatory and antiallergic activity in in vitro and in vivo AD models; however, there are few relev
