Mucocutaneous manifestations in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

BACKGROUND: Mucocutaneous manifestations are one of the first clinical signs in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). To the best of our knowledge, there has been no previous study describing dermatologic manifestations in Mauritanians infected with HIV. The aim of the present study was to determine the profiles of mucocutaneous manifestations in relation to CD4 T cell count in HIV-positive Mauritanian patients. METHODS: A total of 86 adult patients aged > 18 years old attending the Ambulatory Treatment Center of the National Hospital of Nouakchott, Mauritania, with newly

Clinical Findings and Provision of Care in Haemodialysis Patients with Chronic Itch: New Results from the German Epidemiological Haemodialysis Itch Study.

The German Epidemiological Haemodialysis Itch Study (GEHIS) has shown that more than one-third of haemodialysis (HD) patients have chronic itch (CI). As part of GEHIS, 216 patients with current CI were offered a dermatological examination, of whom 177 were investigated. According to the clinical classification of the International Forum for the Study of Itch (IFSI), 43.5% (n = 77) of the patients examined had CI with no skin lesions (IFSI II), 37.9% (n = 67) had secondary scratch lesions (IFSI III), and 18.6% (n = 33) primarily had diseased skin (IFSI I). Severity of CI and itch-related qualit

Epidemiology and determinants of pruritus in pre-dialysis chronic kidney disease patients.

PURPOSE: There are only a few small studies investigating chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus (CKD-P) in pre-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD). None of these has taken into account the associations of CKD-P with clinical features and laboratory data. We aimed to study prevalence of and clinical and laboratory associates of CKD-P in pre-dialysis CKD patients. METHODS: A total of 402 consecutive stage 2-5 pre-dialysis CKD patients were included in this cross-sectional study. Pruritus was scored based on visual analog scale (VAS). Demographic and clinical features, comorbidities, smok

Acquired reactive perforating collagenosis and pseudoporphyric bullous dermatosis in a hemodialysis patient.

Hemodialysis patients present with a broad spectrum of specific and nonspecific skin disorders, which rarely coexist. We report an exceptional case of a hemodialysis patient that developed acquired reactive perforating collagenosis and pseudoporphyric bullous dermatosis on the basis of common skin disorders which include hyperpigmentation, pruritus, xerosis cutis, and Linsday's nails. Interestingly, our patient presented with two unusual but distinctive cutaneous dermopathies on the background of other commonly seen skin alterations. The patient was successfully treated with allopurinol and N-

Edema, Hyperpigmentation, Induration: 3 Skin Signs Heralding Danger in Patients on Maintenance Hemodialysis.

Skin changes are common in patients on dialysis. This study focused on putative associations of specific skin findings with comorbidities and mortality. We performed a retrospective analysis of data from 508 patients on maintenance hemodialysis therapy in 7 centers in the German State of North Rhine Westphalia. Data had been collected by interview, from patient files, and from targeted physical examination in an earlier prospective study screening hemodialysis patients for the presence of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. While on dialysis, patients' extremities had been examined for any of the fo

"I Lost My Image, the Image Others Know Me By": Findings From a Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study of Patients Living With Treatment-Induced Cutaneous Toxicities.

Cancer patients receiving targeted therapies often develop persistent cutaneous adverse effects, such as papulopustular eruption (rash), xerosis cutis (dry skin), pruritus (itch), and hair and nail changes. These can be dose-limiting or a cause for therapy discontinuation but also can be wearing on patients, negatively influencing their self-image and relationships with others. In a Ricoeurian hermeneutic phenomenological study, we aimed to explore the lived experiences of colorectal, pancreatic, and non-small cell lung cancer patients living with cutaneous toxicities following treatment with

Mechanisms of skin aging induced by EGFR inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms of skin aging have not been completely elucidated. Anecdotal data suggests that EGFR inhibition accelerates aging-like skin changes. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics and investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying skin changes associated with the use of EFGRIs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients during prolonged treatment with EGFRIs (>3 months) were analyzed for aging-like skin changes. Baseline EGFR expression was compared in young (<25 years old) vs. old (> 65 years old) skin. In addition, the regula

The effectiveness of using a bath oil to reduce signs of dry skin: A randomized controlled pragmatic study.

BACKGROUND: Dry skin (xerosis cutis) is increasingly recognized as a relevant health problem in daily life and in health and nursing care. The use of bath additives such as oils is common to reduce dry skin, but empirical evidence supporting this practice is limited. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of using a bath oil additive in improving skin barrier function and ameliorating dry skin in comparison to non-oil containing skin cleansers for bathing or showering. DESIGN: Single centre randomized observer blind pragmatic parallel group trial. SETTINGS: O

Novel bioactive from Lactobacillus brevis DSM17250 to stimulate the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis: a pilot study.

Commensal skin microbiota plays an important role in both influencing the immune response of the skin and acting as a barrier against colonisation of potentially pathogenic microorganisms and overgrowth of opportunistic pathogens. Staphylococcus epidermidis is a key constituent of the normal microbiota on human skin. It balances the inflammatory response after skin injury and produces antimicrobial molecules that selectively inhibit skin pathogens. Here we describe Lactobacillus brevis DSM17250 that was identified among hundreds of Lactobacillus strains to exhibit an anti-inflammatory effect i

Rare hereditary diseases with defects in DNA-repair.

The human genome is constantly exposed to various sources of DNA damage. Ineffective protection from this damage leads to genetic instability which can ultimately give rise to somatic disease, causing mutations. Therefore our organism commands a number of highly conserved and effective mechanisms responsible for DNA repair. If these repair mechanisms are defective due to germline mutations in relevant genes, rare diseases with DNA repair deficiencies can arise. Today, a limited number of rare hereditary diseases characterized by genetic defects of DNA repair mechanisms is known, comprising ata

Terra firma-forme dermatosis.

Terra firma-forme dermatosis is characterized by 'dirty' brown-grey cutaneous patches and plaques that can simply be eradicated by forceful swabbing with alcohol pads. The pathogenesis has been attributed to abnormal and delayed keratinization. Although affected patients present with typical lesions, the disorder is not well-known by dermatologists. In this report, we describe two patients with terra firma-forme dermatosis in the setting of xerosis cutis and atopic dermatitis. From a clinical point of view, we lay emphasis on its unique expression and diagnosis/treatment. From a histological p

Cutaneous drug eruptions associated with the use of new oncological drugs.

There is a variety of adverse effects and toxicities of newer and older chemotherapeutic agents which emerge in the skin, mucosa and adnexa. Common skin reactions while undergoing chemotherapy include alopecia, changes in skin pigmentation, palmoplantar erythrodysesthesia, nail dystrophies and stomatitis. Extravasation injuries or hypersensitivity reactions may be severe. New oncologic agents have led to the development of different, class-specific cutaneous side effects. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors induce papulopustular rashes in a high percentage of patients as well as
