Rhabdomyolysis Following Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy.

Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy remains a favorable treatment option for locally advanced prostate cancer in patients with obstructive lower urinary tract symptoms. However, the steep Trendelenburg lithotomy position required for this procedure can result in serious complications, particularly in patients with obesity. Here, the case of a 66-year-old man with obesity (BMI, 35 kg/m2), insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, and multiple comorbidities is reported, who underwent robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (console time, approximately 4 h) for clinically staged cT3a cN1 prostate cancer

Is Primary Closure Safe and Effective for Sacral Pressure Ulcers? Single-Surgeon Experience With Negative Pressure Wound Therapy in a Medical Center and a Regional Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Sacral pressure ulcers present a major reconstructive challenge, especially in elderly and bedridden patients. Although negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has been widely used in wound management, its integration into surgical protocols for pressure ulcer closure is underreported in midlevel medical centers. We aimed to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and reproducibility of a streamlined surgical strategy for sacral pressure ulcers combining debridement, primary closure, and closed-incision-NPWT (CI-NPWT) and examine the outcomes in patients treated in 2 institutional settings w

Construction and validation of a multi-function artificial intelligence-assisted system for pressure injury recognition.

BACKGROUND: With the acceleration of population aging, the incidence of pressure injury (PI) continues to rise, making early identification and accurate staging essential for preventing disease progression and improving prognosis. Conventional manual assessment relies heavily on clinical experience and subjective judgment, limiting real-time, objective, and quantitative evaluation. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate an artificial intelligence model based on the YOLOv11 neural network that integrates automatic PI detection, intelligent staging, and wound size measurement, ther

Characterization of an Ischemia-Reperfusion Model for the Formation of a Stage II Pressure Injury in Diabetic Mice.

INTRODUCTION: Pressure injuries (PIs) in patients with diabetes mellitus still impact patients' health and place a heavy burden on healthcare systems. Stage I and stage II PIs are particularly prevalent among individuals with diabetes. Without timely and appropriate interventions, these injuries can progress to more severe stages, requiring prolonged recovery periods. Thus, the development of preclinical animal models that can mimic stage I or II PIs in diabetic patients is urgently needed to understand the mechanisms of injury formation and healing. METHODS: In this study, magnets were used

The Value of a Modified Posterior Thigh Flap with Z-Plasty for Reconstruction of Ischial Tuberosity Pressure Ulcers: A Retrospective Single Center Analysis.

Pressure ulcers are a persistent and growing challenge in modern medicine, with prevalence rates ranging from 3.4% to 32.4% globally. Demographic changes suggest an increasing number of patients at risk, emphasizing the need for effective prevention and advanced treatment strategies. These ulcers, particularly stages III and IV, often require surgical intervention due to severe tissue damage. Among the surgical options, the Posterior Thigh Flap has emerged as a reliable fasciocutaneous flap, frequently referred to as a "work-horse flap", for defect coverage in the ischial region. To improve ou

Testing the study protocol and interrater reliability of a new end-of-life wound assessment tool: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Some dying individuals can develop skin injuries at the end-of-life (EOL) due to factors associated with the disease processes, aging or both. These EOL wounds, which include Kennedy terminal ulcers, Trombley-Brennan terminal tissue injuries, Skin Changes at Life's End and end-stage skin failure, have distinguishing features. Yet, they can appear similar to pressure injuries (PIs), making assessment difficult. Compounding this was the lack of clinical assessment tool for EOL wounds. In 2022, we conducted a modified Delphi panel to develop a new EOL wound assessment tool for use in
