Convolutional Neural Network Models for Visual Classification of Pressure Ulcer Stages: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Pressure injuries (PIs) pose a negative health impact and a substantial economic burden on patients and society. Accurate staging is crucial for treating PIs. Owing to the diversity in the clinical manifestations of PIs and the lack of objective biochemical and pathological examinations, accurate staging of PIs is a major challenge. The deep learning algorithm, which uses convolutional neural networks (CNNs), has demonstrated exceptional classification performance in the intricate domain of skin diseases and wounds and has the potential to improve the staging accuracy of PIs. Reducing the incidence of stage II or higher pressure injuries in patients undergoing prone positioning in the intensive care unit: A pre- post-intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Prone positioning (PP) is widely used in intensive care units (ICUs) to improve oxygenation in patients with respiratory distress. However, prolonged maintenance in this non-physiological position, especially in patients with underlying comorbidities, increases the risk of pressure injuries (PIs). AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a nursing quality improvement (QI) project in reducing the incidence of stage II or higher PIs in ICU patients undergoing prone positioning. STUDY DESIGN: This was a single-centre, pre- and post-intervention QI study conducted in an

Pressure Injury Incidence and Risk Factors in Neonates Undergoing Surgical Intervention: A Prospective Study.

The aim of this study is to determine the incidence of pressure injuries (PI) and risk factors in neonatal patients followed up in the intensive care unit undergoing surgical intervention. Neonates are recognised as a patient population at high risk of pressure injury. Although the incidence of PI in hospitalised neonates is high, epidemiological studies on postoperative PI and affecting factors in hospitalised infants are scarce. A prospective, descriptive study. This study report follows the STROBE checklist. This study was conducted with 105 patients who received postoperative care in the n

Efficacy analysis of bilateral gluteus muscle flap and skin flap layered advancement closure for reconstructing stage IV sacral pressure ulcer/injury.

Pressure ulcer/injury (PU/PI) is serious wounds that are costly to treat. Reconstructive surgery is usually reserved for deep or hard-to-heal cases of stage III and IV ulcers. Following surgical debridement, local flaps are frequently used to fill the wound cavity. Surgical treatment of PU/PI is challenging for high recurrence rates. Our study evaluates the use of bilateral gluteus muscle flap and skin flap layered advancement closure to reconstruct the sacral PU/PI. We performed a retrospective analysis of patients with stage IV sacral PU/PIs treated with our bilateral gluteus muscle flap and

[Current status and influencing factors of care burden in informal caregivers of patients with pressure injuries].

OBJECTIVES: With the accelerating aging of the population and the rising prevalence of chronic diseases, the number of patients with pressure injuries (PIs) has increased markedly, prolonging the period of disease-related care. Informal caregivers play a critical role in the daily care of patients with pressure injuries, and their care burden has become increasingly prominent. This study aims to investigate the current status and influencing factors of care burden among informal caregivers of patients with PIs, providing evidence for targeted intervention strategies. METHODS: A total of 170 i

Biological Skin Substitutes in Pressure Ulcers: High-Purity Type I Collagen-Based Versus Amnion/Chorion Membrane.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers (PUs) present a therapeutic challenge in bedridden or neurologically impaired patients and represent a significant healthcare burden, affecting millions of patients worldwide. Current standard treatment approaches often fall short in achieving optimal healing outcomes, necessitating the development of advanced therapeutic interventions. Biological skin substitutes - high-purity type I collagen (HPTC) and dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane (dHACM) - have emerged as promising therapeutic alternatives to traditional wound care approaches. This study compares thei

Novel Approach to Dressing Using Vinegar-Soaked Gauze and Grated Papaya in the Management of Pseudomonas-Infected Pressure Ulcers: A Case Report.

Pressure ulcers in chronically immobilized patients often become infected with multidrug-resistant organisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Management is particularly challenging in low-resource settings where advanced wound care products are unavailable. Natural, inexpensive alternatives, such as vinegar and papaya, have demonstrated antimicrobial and debriding properties, but their combined use has not been formally documented. A 65-year-old male with advanced Parkinsonian disease and a prior cerebrovascular accident, bedridden and dependent for care, presented with multiple Stage III-IV gl

Preliminary Surgical Findings and Complications After National Centralization of Pediatric Bone Sarcoma Resections in the Netherlands: A Benchmarking Study.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric bone sarcomas are rare malignancies that are usually treated with specialized multimodal care to allow specialized oncologists to gain experience and provide expertise in treatment. In the Netherlands, oncologic care for all pediatric cancers, including pediatric bone sarcoma, has been centralized in one tertiary referral center for pediatric oncology since 2018. Surgical decision-making is not solely driven by whether limb salvage is oncologically feasible, but rather by a comprehensive shared decision-making process in which all surgical options are carefully weighed ag
