A new method known as pedography enables the measurement of plantar pressure while walking. Different areas on the sole can be separately analyzed by means of a personal computer. We studied plantar pressure in 20 patients walking normally on a horizontal platform. Four different stages of weight bearing were investigated, namely 0, 10, 20, and 30 kg, in the ten diabetics and ten non-diabetics. All diabetic suffered from peripheral neuropathy, which was clinically proven as well as a reduction in nerve conduction velocity in the peroneal nerve. PURPOSE: To determine whether the myocutaneous flap procedure, the preferred treatment for young patients with stage III pressure ulcers, is appropriate for moderately demented nursing home residents.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A model of the treatment decision was created using the decision-tree format. The probabilities of treatment outcomes in the decision tree were derived from the literature. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of pulsed high-frequency, high peak power electromagnetic energy (Diapulse) in the healing of pressure ulcers. Patients with Stage II ulcers unhealed within three to 12 weeks and those with Stage III ulcers unhealed within eight to 168 weeks by conventional methods were included in the study. This study compares the nutritional status and dietary intake of 14 tubefed nursing home patients with pressure sores (age: 70 +/- 5 years, mean +/- SEM) to 12 tubefed patient-controls without sores (age: 60 +/- 7 years). Patients tended to have higher calorie intake (32 +/- 3 kcal/kg) than patient-controls (26 +/- 2 kcal/kg, p = 0.11). Iloprost, a stable carbaprostacyclin analog, was infused (up to 2-4 ng/kg/min) for 12 h daily on 5 consecutive days into the forearm vein of 13 patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) of legs (stages IIb-III). The healing effects of the Ferris polymeric membrane dressing were tested in a 70-day evaluation of 18 ulcers on 13 elderly subjects with Stage I, II, and III pressure ulcers. The mean length of time these ulcers had been present prior to the trial dressing was 144 days with 50% of the ulcers (n = 9) present for 75 days or longer. Over 60% of the ulcers were completely healed and over 94% were improved during the study.

On July 1, 1988, a 6-month study began which included 15 ICF and SNF facilities and a census of approximately 1,300 patients. Forms and instructions were sent to each facility prior to the study. We analyzed prospective data from 19,889 elderly residents of 51 nursing homes from 1984 to 1985 to determine the prevalence, incidence, and natural history of pressure ulcers. Between 1970 and 1979, 140 patients aged between 19 and 84 years with endoscopically confirmed gastric ulcer (GU), were treated with Biogastrone in reducing doses for 6 months.
