Comparison of four risk assessment scales in predicting the risk of intraoperative acquired pressure injury in adult surgical patients: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and compare four predictive models for intraoperative acquired pressure injury (IAPI) in surgical patients. METHODS: One hundred patients undergoing various surgeries (hepatobiliary, pancreas, spleen, gastrointestinal, and cardiac surgeries) at Ruijin Hospital from November 2021 to September 2022 were included in this prospective cohort study. Four pressure injury risk assessment scales were used to measure the pressure injury risk: the Braden scale, Munro Pressure Injury Risk Assessment Scale, Scott Triggers tool, and CORN Intraoperative Acquired Pressure Injury Risk As

Influence of severity of illnesses on risk of death in intensive care unit patients with severity of pressure injuries as mediating variable.

This study was to verify whether the severity of pressure injuries (PIs) in intensive care unit (ICU) patients plays a mediating role in the relationship between severity of their illnesses and risk of death. I examined adult patients admitted to the ICUs between 1 January 2014 and 31 August 2021. The average follow-up period was 11.34 months. A total of 390 ICU patients suffered from PIs. The influences of the APACHE II score of the ICU patients on the mediating variable 'unstageable & DTPIs vs. Stage 1&2 PIs' and on risk of death were significant. After controlling the influence of APACHE II

Deep Vein Thrombosis Revealing A "Silent" Coeliac Disease.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 20% of flap surgeries in people with spinal cord injury/disorder and stage III and IV pressure injury result in a major complication requiring re-surgery. Although several factors are associated with postoperative complications according to the literature, there is no risk prediction model for major postoperative complications in the treatment of stage III and IV pressure injuries in people with spinal cord injury/disorder. STUDY AIM: The study aims to predict the risk of major postoperative complications in people with spinal cord injury/disorder and stage III and I

"A-PePSI LIGhT" Assessment Score to Predict Pressure Sore Impaired Healing Late Recurrence, Immobility, Greater Surface, Inhibited Thrombocytes.

BACKGROUND: Complication rates of up to 46 percent are reported following pressure sore surgery. Pressure sore patients often exhibit ineffective postoperative wound healing despite tension-free flap coverage, necessitating surgical revision and prolonged hospitalization. Rather than pressure sore recurrence, such impaired healing reflects a failed progress through the physiologic stages of the normal wound-healing cascade. The principal objective of the study reported here was to elucidate potentially modifiable inherent variables that predict predisposition to impaired healing and to provide

Long-Term Follow-up of Complex Calcaneal Osteomyelitis Treated With Modified Gaenslen Approach.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of chronic calcaneal osteomyelitis is a challenging and increasing problem because of the high prevalence of diabetes mellitus and operative fixation of heel fractures. In 1931, Gaenslen reported treatment of hematogenous calcaneal osteomyelitis by surgical excision through a midline, sagittal plantar incision. We have refined this approach to allow successful healing and early mobilization in a modern series of complex patients with hematogenous, diabetic, and postsurgical osteomyelitis. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients (mean age 54.6 years, range 20-94) with Cierny-M

Pressure sore incidence and treatment in left ventricular assist device (LVAD)-equipped patients: Insights from a prospective series.

INTRODUCTION: A left ventricular assistance device (LVAD) is indicated in patients with end-stage heart failure. Due to the non-physiologic blood flow, a LVAD may favor pressure sores with a devastating risk of infection. This work shows the prevalence and treatment of pressure sores in LVAD patients, to optimize their management. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively investigated all LVAD implantations at the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) from 2015 to 2019. We detected patients who developed a pressure sore and evaluated the timeline, management, and outcomes. RESULTS: Forty-two pa

Derivation and validation of a prediction model to establish nursing-sensitive quality benchmarks in medical inpatients: a secondary data analysis of a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Hospitals are using nursing-sensitive outcomes (NSOs) based on administrative data to measure and benchmark quality of nursing care in acute care wards. In order to facilitate comparisons between different hospitals and wards with heterogeneous patient populations, proper adjustment procedures are required. In this article, we first identify predictors for common NSOs in acute medical care of adult patients based on administrative data. We then develop and cross-validate an NSO-oriented prediction model. METHODS: We used administrative data from seven hospitals in Switzerland to d

"Platelet-Rich Fibrin Membrane-as a novel biomaterial for pressure injury healing in a person with spinal cord injury: A case report".

INTRODUCTION: Pressure injury (PI) impacts the quality of life, and socioeconomic and psychological well-being negatively in persons with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). Autologous Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) showed promising roles in wound healing. PRF is considered a second-generation PRP, contains more growth factors and is more biocompatible than PRP. It possesses an additional favourable impact on wound healing due to its three-dimensional fibrin architecture, and antimicrobial property. There are no studies on PRF membrane use for PI healing in SCI. CASE PRESENTA

Reconstructive surgery for treating pressure ulcers.

BACKGROUND: There are several possible interventions for managing pressure ulcers (sometimes referred to as pressure injuries), ranging from pressure-relieving measures, such as repositioning, to reconstructive surgery. The surgical approach is usually reserved for recalcitrant wounds (where the healing process has stalled, or the wound is not responding to treatment) or wounds with full-thickness skin loss and exposure of deeper structures such as muscle fascia or bone. Reconstructive surgery commonly involves wound debridement followed by filling the wound with new tissue. Whilst this is an
