Perhaps, the most intriguing cutaneous sequela of Crohn's disease (CD) is 'metastatic' CD, defined as sterile granulomatous skin lesions arising at sites discontinuous from the gastrointestinal tract. Though various histopathologic patterns have been described, a lack of a large series has precluded a comprehensive characterization and distinction from the pathologic differential diagnoses. The histopathology features of 12 new cases of metastatic CD were reviewed. Non-suppurative granulomata with a slight cuff of lymphocytes in a nodular or diffuse pattern with an associated superficial and d

OBJECTIVE: To review published literature on sclerema neonatorum (SN) in order to clarify its clinical presentation, histological features and management compared with two other diseases: subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SCFN) and scleredema.
STUDY DESIGN: PubMed database was searched using the key words Sclerema neonatorum. A total of 55 articles from peer-reviewed journals were reviewed and summarized.
RESULT: SN, SCFN and scleredema are diseases of the subcutaneous adipose tissue. SN is characterized by hardening of the skin that gets bound down to the underlying muscle and bone,

BACKGROUND: The most serious complication of subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN), a rare condition of the newborn characterized by indurated purple nodules, is hypercalcaemia. However, the mechanism for this hypercalcaemia remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the hypercalcaemia associated with SCFN involves expression of the vitamin D-activating enzyme 25-hydroxyvitamin D(3)-1alpha-hydroxylase (1alpha-hydroxylase) in affected tissue.
METHODS: Skin biopsies from two male patients with SCFN and hypercalcaemia were taken. The histological specimens were assessed using a polyclonal ant

BACKGROUND: Although granulomatous arteritis is usually found in extracutaneous Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) lesions, the vasculitis in CSS cutaneous lesions typically shows small vessel vasculitis (leukocytoclastic vasculitis) without demonstrating the feature of granulomatous arteritis confirming the proper classification of CSS in the category of granulomatous vasculitis.
METHODS: Four deep excisional biopsies were obtained from three untreated CSS patients who presented with livedo reticularis and subcutaneous nodules. Tissue blocks were recut and submitted for hematoxylin and eosin and e

PURPOSE: To measure an average subcutaneous tissue thickness in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and other liver diseases using bedside sonography and make comparisons of thickness between groups. The study also addressed whether a cut-off subcutaneous tissue thickness exists below which NAFLD is unlikely.
METHODS: Sonograph was performed on 113 consecutive patients with chronic liver disease. Diagnosis was derived from serological data combined with liver biopsy in all cases. Distance was measured between the skin and the liver surface and was labeled the subcutaneous tissue thicknes

Between September 1997 and March 1998, a severe skin, eye, and mouth disease was observed in a population of dusky pigmy rattlesnakes (Sistrurus miliarius barbouri), at the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge in Volusia County, Florida (USA). Three affected pigmy rattlesnakes were submitted for necropsy. All snakes had severe necrotizing and predominantly granulomatous dermatitis, stomatitis, and ophthalmitis, with involvement of the subadjacent musculature and other soft tissues. Numerous fungal hyphae were seen throughout tissue sections stained with periodic acid Schiff and Gomori's meth

Palisaded neutrophilic granulomatous dermatitis (PNGD) is an entity that has not been clearly defined either clinically or histopathologically. It is seen in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other connective tissue diseases. In the past, many cases of PNGD have been described under several different names including palisaded neutrophilic and granulomatous dermatitis, linear subcutaneous bands, interstitial granulomatous dermatitis with cutaneous cords and arthritis, rheumatoid papules, and Churg-Strauss granuloma. We report 7 additional cases of PNGD. Clinically, 6 patients presented wit

Glycidol is a viscous liquid that is used as a stabilizer in the manufacture of vinyl polymers, as an additive for oil and synthetic hydraulic fluids, and as a diluent in some epoxy resins. NTP Toxicology and Carcinogenesis studies were conducted by administering glycidol (94% pure, containing 1.2% 3-methoxy-1,2-propanediol, 0.4% 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol, 2.8% diglycidyl ether, and 1.1% 2,6-dimethanol-1,4-dioxane) in water by gavage to groups of F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice of each sex for 16 days, 13 weeks, or 2 years. Genetic toxicology studies were conducted in Salmonella typhimurium, Chines

Four culture-documented cases of pulmonary sporotrichosis, three primary infections and one with multisystem involvement, are presented. Two of these patients are the first reported cases of primary lung disease treated with ketoconazole. This antifungal agent appears to be ineffective in eradicating this infection. The four cases, as well as a review of the literature, illustrate several important aspects of this rare disease. Pulmonary sporotrichosis is most commonly found in males with a history of alcohol abuse who are between the ages of 30 and 60. The infection is usually confined to the

The clinical and pathologic features of 25 cases of phaeomycotic cyst, collected at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology between 1959 and 1978, are described. Phaeomycotic cyst is infection of the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissue by dematiaceous (brown) fungi. Species of Phialophora were most frequently isolated from these lesions. Synonyms for phaeomycotic cyst are--among others--phaeomycosis and phaeosporotrichosis. Phaeohyphomycosis includes phaeomycotic cyst and some other mycoses. The term "phaeo" is derived from the Greek phi alpha iota omicron sigma, meaning grey or black, and ref
