Recently a new subset of lupus erythematosus with distinct cutaneous lesions has been defined as subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus. The salient clinical features are transient nonscarring widespread erythematosquamous or annular eruptions on the trunk and arms, cytopenia, musculo-skeletal symptoms and sometimes mild renal and cerebrovascular disease. Although more than one half of the patients have positive antinuclear factor tests, in a smaller proportion only antibodies against the predominantly cytoplasmic antigens Ro and sometimes La can be demonstrated. Due to the negative routine se

We studied the autoimmune serologic features and histocompatibility antigen associations of 27 patients who had a widespread, nonscarring and often photosensitive form of histologically specific cutaneous lupus erythematosus. We designated this disorder as subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Skin lesions from this disorder can be distinguished from scarring discoid lupus erythematosus lesions both on a morphologic and histopathologic basis. Antinuclear and anticytoplasmic antibodies (Ro or Ro and La) and circulating immune complexes were frequently present in patients with subacute cutaneo

A patient with widespread subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) developed halos of uninflamed, normal-appearing skin around lesions of molluscum contagiosum. A biopsy confirmed the lack of active lupus erythematosus (LE) in the halo area (neither basal layer liquefaction nor inflammatory infiltrate was present). Direct immunofluorescence of the halo area showed only weak staining with IgG and C3. In contrast, adjacent skin, clinically involved with cutaneous LE, showed both active LE by light microscopy and strong staining with IgG and C3. We feel the molluscum contagiosum lesions that

We have identified a clinically distinct subset of lupus erythematosus patients marked by the presence of a histologically proven, nonscarring variety of cutaneous LE (subacute cutaneous LE) in which there is a very high frequency of the human leukocyte antigens (HLA) B8 and DR3. Differences in the configuration of their skin lesions allowed a separation of the patients into two clinical subgroups; annular and papulosquamous. HLA-B8 was increased in the annular subgroup (81%, corrected P (Pc) < 0.007) and combined group (65%, Pc < 0.004). HLA-DR3 was present in all 11 of the annular patients (

Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) and various types of lupus erythematosus (LE) have been reported in the same patient on several occasions. In a large group of patients with PCT reported by Grossman et al, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was found in two. Possibly LE is more common in patients with PCT; however, the mechanisms behind this coexistence are still unknown. The concurrent of PCT and subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE), as described by Sontheimer et al, has not been reported in previous patients. We are reporting a case of SCLE and PCT which has multiple complications in t

We have characterized the clinical and laboratory features of 27 patients who had in common a recurring, superficial, nonscarring type of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (LE) that occurred in a characteristic distribution (subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus [SCLE]). This clinically distinct form of cutaneous LE has not previously been analyzed as a separate entity and thus, its clinical importance has not been fully appreciated. We found that these patients frequently had a mild systemic illness marked by musculoskeletal complaints and serologic abnormalities. Forty-eight percent had systemi
