Sex bias in autoimmune disease (AID) prevalence is known, but the role of estrogen in disease progression is more complex. Estrogen can even be protective in some AIDs; but in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and systemic sclerosis (SSc), estrogen, its metabolites, and its receptors have been demonstrated to play critical, localized inflammatory roles. Estrogen is instrumental to the fibrosis seen in RA, SLE, SSc and other disease states, including breast cancer and uterine leiomyomas. Fibrotic diseases tend to share a common pattern in which lymphocyte-monocyte i

Nephropathic apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1) risk alleles (G1/G2) have been associated with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, HIV-associated nephropathy, Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)-associated collapsing glomerulopathy and other glomerulonephritides. These alleles confer protection from Trypanosoma brucei infections which are enriched in sub-Saharan African populations. We present a young woman with obesity, hypertension, subnephrotic range proteinuria who was found to have obesity-related glomerulopathy on kidney biopsy while harbouring two high-risk APOL1 alleles (G1/G2). Given the potent

Vascular inflammation could occur in all organs and tissues in patients with systematic lupus erythematosus (SLE), of which skin is the most frequent one. Our previous research identified anti-galectin-3 (Gal3) antibodies (Abs) as an important mediator of lupus cutaneous vasculopathy. Herein, we showed that anti-Gal3 Abs dysregulated the function of vascular endothelial cells with higher transcript levels of IL-1β and increased expression of mature IL-1β. The enhanced production of IL-1β secreted by endothelial cells was dependent on NLRP3 inflammasome. Intradermal injection of anti-Gal3 Abs i

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic disease, which can bring damage to multiple organ systems. It is easily misdiagnosed as mechanical intestinal obstruction and treated by surgery, which not only brings physical pain to patients, but also increases their economic burden. On the other hand, Castleman disease (CD) is also a rare disease that can be easily missed clinically. Consequently, IPO in SLE complicated by CD is extremely rare in clinical practice and easily ignored for clinicians, which may result in delayed diagnosis, and treatment, and even overtreatment.

Renal involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus is usually exhibited as lupus nephritis, which is a form of immune complex-mediated glomerulonephritis and one of the most severe organ manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus. The pathogenesis involved glomerular immune complex deposition, which leads to glomerular inflammation and typically shows a "full-house" pattern on immunofluorescence microscopy. Other forms of glomerulonephritis are rarely observed in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Pauci-immune crescentic glomerulonephritis is the pattern of injury most commonly obs

A comprehensive search of published literature in brain volumetry was conducted in three autoimmune diseases - systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and ulcerative colitis (UC) - with the intention of performing a meta-analysis of published data. Due to the lack of data in RA and UC, the reported meta-analysis was limited to SLE. The MEDLINE database was searched for studies from 1988 to March 2022. A total of 175 papers met the initial inclusion criteria, and 16 were included in a random-effects meta-analysis. The reduction in the number of papers included in the fina

Progranulin (PGRN) is a glycoprotein formed by 593 amino acids encoded by the GRN gene. It has an important role in immunity and inflammatory response, as well as in tissue recovery. Its role in musculoskeletal inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and intervertebral disc degeneration disease (IVDD), is, nowadays, an important target to investigate. The objective of this review is to systematically sum up all the recent findings concerning PGRN as a target in the development and resolution of the inflammatory diseases. PubMed was examined w

BACKGROUND: Dry eye disease is a multifactorial chronic disorder of the ocular surface, which leads to symptoms of discomfort and distress. Dry eye disease is a global health concern and is one of the most frequent ocular diseases encountered in an ophthalmology clinic. The estimated prevalence of dry eye disease in the literature ranged from 7.4% to 93.2%. Saudi Arabia's population, especially in the eastern province, is at great risk of developing dry eye disease, however, there is hardly any nationwide study that assesses the prevalence of dry eye disease among the general population and it

Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous disease of unknown aetiology. About 85% of total cases of LS are genital cases, while extragenital form is seen in only 15-20% of cases. Extragenital LS (EGLS) can occur simultaneously with genital form; however, in 6% of the cases, only extragenital form has been described. Genetic, autoimmune, infectious, environmental and hormonal factors are implicated in its aetiology. Extragenital LS presents as asymptomatic white opalescent papules, which cluster in plaques and slowly progress over time resulting in parchment-like skin usuall

INTRODUCTION: To date, almost 7 billion doses of the different types of vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 have been administered worldwide. Although the severity of new cases of SARS-CoV-2 has progressively decreased, and the pressure on national health systems has declined, the development of de novo glomerular injuries has been suggested.
METHODS: This study aimed to examine the patients who were hospitalized in our Unit between April and November 2021 and underwent renal biopsy for new-onset urinary abnormalities (UA) and/or renal impairment within 3 months of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination.
RESULTS: We

Cutaneous leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV) has a distinctive clinical and light microscopic presentation; however, the etiologic basis of LCV is varied. Most cases are attributable to immune complex deposition within a vessel wall and represent an Arthus type III immune complex reaction. The prototypic immunoreactant profile is characterized by granular deposits of components of complement activation in concert with immunoglobulin within the cutaneous vasculature. We encountered nine patients with vasculitic and/or vesiculobullous clinical presentations exhibiting an LCV in association with a

Anti-U1-RNP antibodies are necessary for the diagnosis of mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), but they are also prevalent in other connective tissue diseases, especially systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), from which distinction remains challenging. We aimed to describe the presentation and outcome of patients with anti-U1-RNP antibodies and to identify factors to distinguish MCTD from SLE. We retrospectively applied the criteria sets for MCTD, SLE, systemic sclerosis (SSc) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to all patients displaying anti-U1-RNP antibodies in the hospital of Caen from 2000 to

OBJECTIVES: Pregnancy in SSc is burdened with an increased risk of obstetric complications. Little is known about the underlying placental alterations. This study aimed to better understand pathological changes and the role of inflammation in SSc placentas. Leucocyte infiltration, inflammatory mediators and atypical chemokine receptor 2 (ACKR2) expression in SSc placentas were compared with those in other rheumatic diseases (ORD) and healthy controls (HC).
METHODS: A case-control study was conducted on eight pregnant SSc patients compared with 16 patients with ORD and 16 HC matched for gestat

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Lupus nephritis is a common severe manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus. Despite recent advances in therapeutics and understanding of its pathogenesis, there are still substantial unmet needs. This review discusses recent discoveries in these areas, especially the role of tubulointerstitial inflammation (TII) in lupus nephritis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Non-white ethnicity is still a major risk and poor prognostic factor in lupus nephritis. TII and fibrosis have been found to be associated with worse renal outcome but the current lupus nephritis treatment guidelines and tr

Small bowel intussusception in adults is rare. Unlike children, adults with intussusception generally have a causative lead point, of which a majority is benign. We report the case of a 55-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus on steroids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs who presented with intermittent melena. Contrast computed tomography revealed intussusception of the terminal ileum, with a low density mass which had advanced into the cecum as the lead point. The patient was diagnosed with ileocolic intussusception. The mass was observed in the terminal ileum on colonoscop

Selective immunoglobulin M deficiency (SIgMD) is the isolated absence of serum immunoglobulin M (IgM) with normal levels of other serum immunoglobulins. SIgMD is associated with infections and autoimmune diseases. While there are few reports on SIgMD complicated by systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), there are no reports on SIgMD complicated by SLE and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS); we present the first report of this kind. A 61-year-old Japanese woman presented with microscopic hematuria and proteinuria. Clinical investigations revealed an elevated serum creatinine level, an undetectable se
