The purpose of our study was to define the neuroimaging features of the cardiolipin antibody syndrome. Thirty-eight patients with elevated anticardiolipin antibody titers were studied with magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography or both. Two patients underwent cerebral angiography. All patients had recurrent transient ischemic attacks, amaurosis, or strokes. One patient had normal imaging findings. The remaining patients had a combination of infarction and atrophy. Focal infarcts, the most common finding, were seen in 32 patients. Cerebral atrophy was seen in 26 patients and was the

The main indication for dacryocystectomy (DCT) is excision of lacrimal sac tumors. DCT may be considered less invasive than dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) because lacrimal bone and nasal mucosa are not violated. To determine other indications for DCT, we performed a retrospective review of all patients who underwent DCT from the Oculoplastics Division, Department of Ophthalmology, UMD-New Jersey Medical School from July 1983 through July 1994. Patients with lacrimal sac tumors were excluded from the study. All 25 patients in the study demonstrated complete nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) and

Immunoglobulin staining was conducted in cochlear tissue from the C3H/lpr autoimmune strain mouse to better understand the local immune processes underlying autoimmune inner ear disease. This mouse is a model for spontaneous systemic lupus erythematosus with coincident elevated cochlear thresholds. Cochleas were examined from C3H/lpr mice at 2 months of age, before disease onset, and at 8 months of age, when systemic disease and hearing loss are manifested. Sections of these cochleas, along with cochlear sections from age-matched C3H/HeJ nonautoimmune controls, were immunocytochemically staine

Leukocyte activation, circulation, and localization to inflammatory sites are dependent on adherence to molecules on other cells or to extracellular matrix ligands. Adhesion molecule expression and interactions are probably involved in initiation and propagation of autoimmune diseases. Adhesion molecules pertinent to the development of autoimmunity are the subject of this review. Material in this review was generated by a manual and a computerized search of medical literature pertaining to adhesion molecules and specific autoimmune diseases. Topics covered include adhesion molecule classificat

It seems apparent that the brain-pituitary-reproductive axis and the brain-thymus-lymphoid axis are linked by an array of internal mechanisms of communication that use similar signals (neurotransmitters, peptides, growth factors, hormones) acting on similar recognition targets. Moreover, such communication networks form the basis and control of each step and every level of reproductive physiology. This work has focused on the LHRH system, a primary central and peripheral clock of both neuroendocrine and immune functions. From the initiation of a sexually organized response, the detection of se

OBJECTIVE: Epitopes on Ki antigen were analyzed using synthetic peptides, including KILT, a 16-mer peptide with an amino acid sequence homologous to the SV40 large T antigen nuclear localization signal (SV40 T NLS).
METHODS: In addition to KILT, 4 synthetic peptides, all potential epitopes on Ki antigen according to computer analysis, were prepared and tested for reactivity with 49 anti-Ki-positive lupus sera by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
RESULTS: Eighteen sera reacted with KILT, but not with other peptides. The reaction of anit-Ki sera with KILT was specifically inhibited by recombi

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous reactions to BCG have rarely been a problem and BCG is one of the safest vaccines in use.
CASE REPORT: Two children, 6 and 7 years old, developed local tuberculosis lupus 7 and 8 months, respectively, after BCG vaccination. Cutaneous changes cured after a treatment with isoniazid for 9 months in one case with observance of the treatment was uncertain in the other.
CONCLUSION: Tuberculosis lupus is a rare complication of BCG vaccination. Its clinical features are identical to those of the vulgaris lupus. The diagnosis is based on clinical, pathology aspects and anamnesia

The histopathology and immunofluorescence of discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) are well documented in adults, but in children they have not been studied systematically. We reviewed nine skin biopsy specimens from six children with DLE. Only three specimens showed the well-developed epidermal changes seen in lesions of adults with DLE, and in the other six, these changes were either mild or absent. All nine specimens showed some degree of vacuolar alteration of the basal layer, ranging from focal and mild to severe. They all had a moderate to heavy lymphocytic dermal infiltrate in a perivascula

We describe the case of a 61 years-old-woman with lupus erythematosus who presented with neurological symptoms, namely dementia, focality and crisis. The neurological presentation of lupus is evaluated clinically, being similar to the central manifestations of patients with systemic onset. The marked cognitive affectation with relation to other cases of lupus with a neurological onset is emphasized. MR has been shown to be a sensitive means of detection of corticosubcortical lesions of neurolupus, not specific to this condition, as well as to their response to immunosuppressors. The aetiopatho

The CD27 belongs to the NGF-R, a family of type I transmembrane receptors present in most T cells. The soluble form of CD27 can be found in body fluids, and elevation of serum levels is observed in T cell activation. Preliminary studies indicate that measurement of sCD27 levels might be of use in the evaluation of immune responses in vivo. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a disease of unknown etiology. T cells from SLE patients have impaired responsiveness to various kinds of stimuli. However, the precise localization of the defect in the activation of SLE remains unclear. In this study w

Infection is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Although various fungi account for a substantial number of these lethal infections, aspergillosis, an important opportunistic infection in immunosuppressed patients, is described rarely. Only 23 cases have been reported in the English-language medical literature. Risk factors for acquiring aspergillosis in these patients were high grade disease activity, granulocytopenia, use of steroids and other immunosuppressive treatment and presence of bacterial infection. The diagnosis in most patients was dela

We report two patients with chilblain lupus erythematosus of Hutchinson (CL) who responded to surgical treatment. One of them was a 72-year-old woman (case 1), and the other a 62-year-old man (case 2). We attempted to treat these patients by excising the lesions and subsequently performing full-thickness free skin grafting, using skin from the abdominal region. No recurrence was seen in the operated area 7 years (case 1) and 3 years (case 2) after surgery. However, lesions persisted in the areas not operated upon, and in the areas where lesions had not been adequately excised. These results su

The patient is a newborn girl, born at term by cesarian section, weighing 3,550 g, and measuring 50 cm in length. According to her mother, she had been presenting erythematous spots involving the scalp, face, and trunk since birth that had increased in size with time. The mother denied any other changes and reported normal growth and development. Physical examination at 2 months of age revealed an infant in good general condition, hydrated, with no fever and no abnormalities detected on careful physical examination. The dermatologic examination revealed numerous circumscribed erythematous-brow

Diffuse musculoskeletal pains in children and adolescents are common. Females are affected relatively more often. Whereas growing pains and joint hypermobility as possible causes tend to occur in younger children, fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) appears to be more frequent in adolescents. In growing pains, typically, a) the pains are localized to the thighs, shins, or calves, b) occur in the evening or at night; and c) are usually relieved by massage. Children are otherwise healthy and have normal growth and development. Children with joint hypermobility manifest pain mainly in the knees, ankles,

BACKGROUND: Lupus erythematosus (LE) is a multi-organ-system disease, the characteristics of which are reflected in the 1982 American Rheumatism Association (ARA) criteria for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). From a dermatological point of view, only the presence of LE-specific histopathology is necessary and sufficient for the diagnosis of LE. The association between the type of LE-specific skin lesion and the severity of extracutaneous manifestations of LE has not yet been investigated systematically.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate, according to the type of LE skin lesi

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) once a rarity in Africa, is now reported in large numbers from many parts of Africa. Although epidemiological surveys have shown that the prevalence in urban populations is similar to Western communities, it is less common in rural areas. Further epidemiological studies are needed to confirm these findings in other parts of Africa and identify factors contributing to this difference to provide a better understanding for the emergence of RA in Africa. Earlier reports suggested that in African blacks RA was a mild disease, severe radiographic changes were uncommon, defo

Twenty-eight SLE patients (Arabs and Asians) in the UAE were studied in this report. The F:M ratio was markedly high; 27:1 in the group as a whole and 21:1 among Arabs. Local patients (Emirians) developed the disease at an earlier age compared to their expatriate Arab compatriots. Arthropathy occurred in 86% and nephropathy in 43% of cases. Next in frequency were leucopenia, mucocutaneous manifestations and serositis. Apart from lupus headache, the other neuro-psychiatric LE were uncommon or not encountered. Efforts to define the stromal architecture of thymic tissues of normal mice have used a panel of monoclonal antibodies (MTS series) to examine the localization of cell subtypes, including reagents that define thymic epithelial and stromal elements. Recent work with these MTS mAbs disclosed significant abnormalities in the thymic cortex of New Zealand mice including the appearance of medullary type epithelial cells in the cortical areas and the presence of epithelial free spaces or 'cortical holes'. To determine whether such abnormalities are unique to NZB mice or are found in other models of m
