In a previous study on lichen planus the morphology and significance of the colloid bodies were discussed (13). In the present study a description is given of 30 dermatoses with colloid bodies, observed among unselected patients. The colloid bodies develop as a result of damage to the epithelium caused by circulatory disorders with subsequent hypo- or anoxia. Lichenoid cell infiltration into the connective tissue--nearly always present--aggravates the process. Dyskeratosis, pyknosis and fibrinoid necrosis of the damaged cells occur and the nuclei disintegrate. The resultant colloid bodies may

Biopsy specimens of skin lesions from three patients with discoid lupus erythematosus and six patients with systemic lupus erythematosus contained the membrane attack complex, which comprises C5b through C9, as well as immune complexes at the dermal-epidermal junction. The basilar epithelium in these areas was vacuolated and edematous, and the dermis contained an inflammatory infiltrate. In contrast, 19 of 29 specimens of normal-appearing skin from patients with discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus showed only immune complexes at the dermal-epidermal junction, without the membrane attack co

Subepithelial electron-dense deposits (SED) were found in the renal biopsies of 36 of 59 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The SED were divided into two groups based on their ultrastructural appearance and distribution within the glomeruli. Type I SED were regular in size and shape, had a homogeneous electron density and a diffuse distribution within the glomeruli, and involved all of the glomeruli in the biopsy. In contrast, the type II SED were irregular in size and shape, tended to be quite large, and had variable electron density. They were present in reduced numbers in inv

The value of determination of pleural fluid glucose, pH, lactic dehydrogenase, IgG, IgA, IgM, C3, C4, anti-IgG antibody, and hydroxyproline in distinguishing between pleural effusions caused by rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and those resulting from other diseases was studied. The series comprised seven patients with RA and 115 patients with other diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus, tuberculosis, malignant disease, empyema, pneumonia, congestive heart failure, and nonspecific pleural effusion. The low glucose concentration, the low pH and the low C4 level in rheumatoid pleural effusion

The presence and distribution of C3b receptors in normal human kidneys and in biopsies from 75 patients with renal disease were investigated by immunohistochemical techniques using monospecific rabbit antibody to the 205,000-mol wt glycoprotein that is the C3b receptor of human peripheral blood cells. Anti-C3b receptor bound exclusively to podocytes in normal renal cortex, and was homogeneously distributed on the plasma membrane of these cells. Biosynthesis of the receptor by the podocyte was suggested by the presence of antigenic activity in the Golgi apparatus. Although occupancy of receptor

Adequately biopsied renal tissue received in the Department of Pathology, University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur from 1,000 consecutive Malaysian patients during an eleven year period between 1970 and 1981 was reviewed. The youngest patient was 6 days old and the oldest 80 years. Both sexes were equally represented. The majority of the patients were Chinese (71%) with Malays and Indians comprising most of the remainder. Over half the patients (50.4%) presented with the nephrotic syndrome. Other modes of presentation included systemic lupus erythematosus, proteinuria and haematuria separately or in

Human sera of patients with liver diseases (n = 7) and with systemic lupus erythematosus (n = 1) containing different antimitochondrial and other antibodies detected by immunofluorescence were reexamined after absorption with various subcellular mitochondrial fractions (whole extract, enriched inner and outer membranes, matrix, respectively). The findings were compared with those of the complement binding tests. The results suggest, that the antimitochondrial antibodies are directed against different antigens localized in the inner as well as in the outer membranes, in the matrix, and in other

The authors report two cases with both true vitiligo and cutaneous lupus erythematosus (LE). The latter was found only on the vitiliginous areas on both exposed and non-exposed skin. A study of the literature shows that this association is very rare and, like the association between vitiligo and antinuclear antibodies, not statistically significant. It is therefore not possible to explain the pathogenesis of this association by a common autoimmune theory, although vitiligo is well known to coexist with other autoimmune disorders and although antimelanocyte antibodies are exceptionally found in

Salivary gland imaging with 99mTc as pertechnetate provides functional information concerning trapping and excretion of the parotid and submandibular glands. Anatomic information gained often adds little to clinical evaluation. On the other hand, functional information may detect subclinical involvement, which correlates well with biopsy of the minor labial salivary glands. Salivary gland abnormalities in systemic disease such as sarcoidosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, and other collagenvascular disorders may be detected before they result in the clinical manifestaions of Sjögr

Pulmonary hypertension is one of the complications in the pulmonary manifestation of SLE. Following a two year SLE history a patient developed pulmonary hypertension although his chest radiograph showed neither pulmonary changes nor signs of hypertension. In two other patients, interstitial fibrosis, pleurisy and pulmonary hypertension were the initial manifestations of SLE. They all complained of dyspnoea and respiratory chest pain. Lung function studies showed restrictive changes, reduced lung compliance and, by two patients, reduced diffusion capacity. Lung biopsy performed in one patient r

Sera from patients with certain autoimmune diseases tht contained autoantibodies to nonhistone nuclear antigens were used as reagents in an indirect immunofluorescent study. The distribution of these nuclear antigens was determined in synchronized human B lymphoid cells. Autoantibodies to Sm antigen, nuclear ribonucleoprotein complex and SS-B antigen were used. Although all three nonhistone antigens appeared to show speckled nuclear straining patterns in the Go phase, different patterns of staining were present at other periods of the cell cycle. The SS-B antigen showed a distinctly nucleolar

Authors review their own experience in PAN, Lupus ery thematosus and renal Amyloidosis. Two patients with PAN, both with arterial hypertension: one of them of macrosco pic type, presenting great aneurysms localized in brain and in renal arteries; the other patient had microscopic type, with good response to corticotherapy after three years of follow-up. Four patients with lupus erythematosus nephritis; kidney biopsy was performed in three of them: two cases with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, and the last one with extramembranos glomerulonephritis. All of them had nephrotic syndrome

Salmonellosis was diagnosed in 4 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Three patients were taking prednisolone, and 3 had evidence of nephritis. All patients were febrile with clinical evidence of lupus activity at the time of diagnosis. Two patients had evidence of hyposplenism during the infection. Because salmonellosis manifests clinical symptoms like those of active SLE, the diagnosis of the salmonella infection was delayed. In 3 patients, the salmonella infection localized to a site of clinical SLE involvement and in all 4 patients, it occurred simultaneously with other bacter

A solid support radioimmunoassay has been developed to detect immunoglobulin specific circulating antibodies to polyuridylic acid (Pol U), single-stranded RNA (ss RNA), and single-stranded DNA (ss DNA) in scleroderma and other connective tissue diseases. The assay system uses flex-vinyl microtiter plates on which bovine methyl albumin, the respective polynucleotide, a 1:80 dilution of patient serum, and tritiated high affinity anti-IgG, -IgA, or -IgM are layered. The individual wells containing the sandwich assay are then counted for the presence of labeled immunoglobulins and the results are

Clearly, many of the connective tissue disorders are intimately associated with either focal tissue evidence of immune complex deposition or markedly elevated levels of complexes during acute disease activity. In many diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis, the immune complexes have been firmly established as basic elements in pathogenesis. In other disorders, however, the presence or measurable elevation of circulating immune complex materials may represent an epiphenomenon that reflects tissue injury secondary to the underlying inflammatory process. Much more

In 22 (13 females, 9 males) of 224 patients presenting with nephrotic syndrome, onset occurred during the second decade of life. Lipoid nephrosis and its variants (nil, focal segmental, or focal global glomerulosclerosis and mesangial proliferative) accounted for the disease in the majority of patients (13 patients). In all with nil change (7 patients) and one of the 4 with mesangial proliferation the disease completely resolved with steroids. Forty-one percent of patients had nephrotic syndrome as the result of other forms of glomerulonephritis: 1 patient had nephrotic syndrome secondary to p

Sera from 20 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and active central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction were examined by indirect immunofluorescence for antibodies to neuronal membrane determinants. Warm-reactive IgG antibodies were demonstrable in 82% (9/11) of patients with clinical evidence for seizures or diffuse CNS disease, but these antibodies generally were absent in non-CNS SLE sera or when focal neurologic deficit or psychosis was the primary CNS manifestation. Cold-reactive antibodies of the IgM class were equally prevalent in patients with or without CNS disease and appea

One male and seven female patients (aged 6 to 26 years) with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), normal urinalyses, and normal biochemical tests of renal function, had renal biopsies to determine if significant nephropathy existed. Several had active SLE in other body systems at the time, either clinically or as evidenced by low serum complement and high native DNA antibody levels. The renal biopsy specimens were studied by light, fluorescent antibody, and electron microscopy. Three patients had a generalized segmental, two had a focal segmental, and one had a generalized diffuse proliferative

Since about 1950 especially, dermatologists world-wide have been utilizing the positive side-effects, discovered by chance, of all groups of antibiotic and antimicrobial drugs. These drugs are used to treat certain non-microbially induced dermatoses, without any knowledge of the mechanisms involved. A short history is given and the most important drugs and the indications for their use are described. The following drugs are undoubtedly effective and sometimes even the therapy of choice: tetracyclines in acne vulgaris and rosacea (including rosacea keratitis); penicillin G in acrodermatitis atr
