Concentric membranous bodies (CMB) are described in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes in a liver biopsy from a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Histologically, the biopsy showed binucleated hepatocytes and rosette formation with lymphocytic infiltrates in portal fields. Hepatocyte cytoplasm showed focal fatty metamorphosis, focal staining for RNA with azure B at pH 4.0 (which was perchloric acid labile), diffuse alloxan-Schiff staining for protein, and PAS-positive, diastase-sensitive glycogen. Ten inbred strains of mice were immunized with the double stranded polyribonucleotide complex polyguanylic . polycytidylic acid [poly(G) . poly(C)]. While some immunogenic properties of this duplex were comparable to those of other nucleic acids antigens, differences were also noted. High (SJL/J, BALB/c), low (DBA/2, AKR) and intermediate responders were observed; these differences were not abolished by adsorption of the duplex to MBSA. This pattern of immune response is distinct both from that observed with two other synthetic polyribonucleotide double helices [poly(A) . poly(U) and poly(I) .

We investigated the effects of methylprednisolone on the glomerular permeability of mice with lupus nephritis. This multicenter regional study analyzes survival of a large group of patients who began chronic dialysis or received their first renal transplant during the 5 1/2-year period that ended in June 1983. Survival was determined from the onset of renal replacement therapy, irrespective of changes in treatment modality. Univariate life-table analysis was used to examine more than 35 risk factors. Age of patients at entry into the therapeutic program significantly affected survival. The renal biopsies of 372 children with various glomerular disorders were reviewed and crescent formation was seen in 56 cases (15%). Four disorders, i.e. systemic lupus erythematosus, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) types I and II and Henoch-Schönlein disease accounted for 74% of 10 diagnostic categories. Idiopathic rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN) was seen in only 2 cases. Fourteen out of 63 children with primary glomerular disease had membranous nephropathy (MN) that was not associated with systemic lupus erythematosus. Vaccination with a vegetal protein--vicilin--was performed in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and antitissue autoantibodies (vessel, myocardium, striated muscle, liver, lung, kidney) were determined before and after vaccination. We are reporting findings in 13 patients who presented with glomerulonephritis without evidence of systemic disease, but who were found to have positive antinuclear antibody results and immunoglobulin and/or complement deposits at the dermal-epidermal junction of normal skin not exposed to light. There was no evidence of other organ involvement, and serologic tests for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) gave negative results. The renal disease is characterized by severe proteinuria, focal or diffuse proliferative glomerular lesions on biopsy, with variable patterns of immunoglobulin deposits.

The authors report four cases of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with severe, active glomerulonephritis. Associated with histologic evidence of glomerular inflammation were focal, predominantly mesangial immune reactants. Specific and nonspecific panniculitis occur in connective tissue diseases. Microscopic studies of the epidermis and dermis, immunofluorescent microscopy, and extensive serologic testing may aid in the diagnosis and classification of these unusual syndromes.
