CREST-associated ruptured right MCA aneurysm: A case report and review of the literature.

Intracranial aneurysms associated with systemic sclerosis and Calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, Esophageal dysmotility, Sclerodactyly, and Telangiectasia (CREST) syndrome are rare, and their pathophysiological relationship remains uncertain. We report the case of a 24-year-old male with systemic sclerosis and clinical features suggestive of CREST syndrome who presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by a ruptured right middle cerebral artery bifurcation aneurysm. The aneurysm was treated with microsurgical clipping, followed by stent-assisted coiling for a residual aneurysm neck identifie

Eosinophilic Fasciitis With Overlap Connective Tissue Disease: A Diagnostic Challenge in Progressive Skin Fibrosis.

Eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) is a rare connective tissue disorder characterized by inflammation and fibrosis of the deep fascia and adjacent subcutaneous tissue. Because its clinical presentation may resemble systemic sclerosis (SSc), diagnosis can be delayed, particularly in patients with an established autoimmune disease. We report a 48-year-old woman with undifferentiated connective tissue disease (UCTD), inflammatory arthritis, and Sjögren's disease overlap syndrome who developed progressive skin thickening and loss of range of motion despite treatment for inflammatory arthritis. Although E

Wernicke's encephalopathy in mixed connective tissue disease triggered by persistent vomiting: a case report and literature review.

Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is an acute, reversible but potentially disabling neurological syndrome caused by thiamine deficiency. It is increasingly recognized in non-alcoholic settings, particularly when persistent vomiting, poor intake, malabsorption, or systemic illness rapidly depletes limited thiamine stores. Patients with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) may be vulnerable because esophageal/gastrointestinal dysmotility, gastroesophageal reflux, chronic inflammation, and reduced oral intake can overlap and obscure nutritional complications. A 38-year-old woman with a 4-year hist

Orbital Involvement in Linear Scleroderma: A Review of The Literature With an Unusual Case.

Linear scleroderma "en coup de sabre" (ECDS) is an uncommon form of localized craniofacial scleroderma, with orbital involvement being exceptionally rare. We present a 29-year-old female with right-sided ECDS who presented with progressive vision loss. Examination revealed an enlarged blind spot with global depression, 6 mm of enophthalmos, ptosis, circumferential optic disc edema, an Adie's pupil, and a characteristic cutaneous ECDS lesion. MRI revealed severe orbital fat atrophy, enlargement of extraocular muscles, and optic nerve contortion with postcontrast enhancement, with no bony abnorm

Recurrent Dystrophic Calcification and Squamous Cell Carcinoma in a Cultured Keratinocyte Scar 35 Years After a 60% Total Body Surface Area Flame Burn.

Dystrophic calcification of burn scars is a rare but disabling late complication that can result in chronic ulceration and increase the risk of squamous cell carcinoma. A male patient sustained burns covering 60% of his total body surface in 1989 and received a combination of split-thickness autografts, paternal homografts, and cultured keratinocyte sheet grafts. The first ulcer appeared in 2004 and recurrent lower limbs ulcerations continued intermittently over the following 2 decades. Imaging and histopathology revealed subcutaneous calcium deposits and 3 distinct well-differentiated squamou

Mucocutaneous manifestations as early indicators of systemic disease: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Mucocutaneous findings may provide important early clues to systemic disease. Because the skin, oral mucosa, eyes, and other visible mucosal surfaces are readily accessible during clinical examination, their careful assessment can contribute to earlier recognition of autoimmune, infectious, metabolic, endocrine, inflammatory, and malignant conditions. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review aims to summarize clinically relevant mucocutaneous manifestations that may act as early indicators of systemic disease, with emphasis on their diagnostic significance and practical relevance for clin

Animal Tissue Mineralization: An Overview of Disease Processes, Comparative Pathology, and Diagnostic Approaches.

Calcium deposition within soft tissues is a significant pathological process, bearing significant implications for animal and human health. It is classified into four categories, including dystrophic, metastatic, idiopathic, and iatrogenic. It involves multiple molecular mechanisms. Vascular calcification includes medial artery mineralization, siderocalcinosis in equine cerebral arteries, and vitamin D-induced arterial mineralization in multiple species. Renal and urinary mineralization occurs with kidney disease, uremic gastropathy, and ethylene glycol toxicity. Calcinosis cutis is associated

Dermoscopic Features of Calcinosis Cutis in 12 Dogs: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Dermoscopy is a non-invasive technique used to preliminary assess skin lesions in humans and, more recently, in animals. Calcinosis cutis (CC) is an uncommon condition in dogs characterised by cutaneous calcification typically secondary to iatrogenic hyper-glucocorticism or endogenous hyper-adrenocorticism. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to describe and characterise the dermoscopic features of CC in dogs affected by hyper-cortisolism, either iatrogenic or spontaneous, and assess the inter-observer agreement of the dermoscopic parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve lesio

Staged Treatment of Cutaneous Calcinosis with Polylactic Acid Matrix, Negative Pressure Wound Therapy and Skin Grafting: A Case Report.

Background and Clinical Significance: Dystrophic calcinosis cutis involves calcium deposition in damaged or chronically inflamed tissues despite normal calcium and phosphate metabolism. Although typically associated with systemic sclerosis and dermatomyositis, it is rare in rheumatoid arthritis. Ulceration over calcified deposits may impair healing and function. This case highlights a staged reconstructive strategy to remove calcified tissue and achieve definitive wound closure. Case Presentation: A 73-year-old woman with a 22-year history of rheumatoid arthritis presented with painful, partia

Cancer-associated myositis: a single-centre 20-year experience.

BACKGROUND: Malignancy identified around the onset of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) is referred to as cancer-associated myositis (CAM), but population-specific data remain relatively limited. AIM: To describe the prevalence, clinical features, and risk factors for CAM over a 20-year period in a single tertiary centre in Greece. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 113 IIM cases treated between 2001 and 2024 in our department, which is a referral centre for rheumatic disease in Central Greece. Medical records were evaluated for demographics, clinical characteristics, au

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

A Clinical Picture of Amyopathic Dermatomyositis.

Clinically amyopathic dermatomyositis (CADM) is a rare subset of classic dermatomyositis (DM) with distinct clinical features and unique autoantibody profiles. Affected individuals usually present with the cutaneous signs of DM, without muscle pain, proximal weakness, or abnormal muscle labs and imaging results. Here, we present the case of a 69-year-old Caucasian male for evaluation of a positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) test and an eight-month history of a rash. He had no associated muscle weakness or pain. A physical examination noted a rash characteristic of dermatomyositis, including pa
