Overview of Juvenile localized scleroderma and its management.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile localized scleroderma (JLS) is a rare pediatric disease characterized by inflammation and skin thickening. JLS is associated with deep tissue and extracutaneous involvement that often results in functional impairment and growth disturbances. This article provides an overview of the disease with a focus on active features and treatment. DATA SOURCES: We searched databases including PubMed, Elsevier and MedLine and Wanfang, reviewing publications from 2013 to 2019. Selected earlier publications were also reviewed. RESULTS: Linear scleroderma is the most common JLS subtype.

Linear Patch of Alopecia in a Child: Trichoscopy Reveals the Actual Diagnosis.

Linear scleroderma en coup de sabre (LSCS) is a clinical variant of morphea that presents with a linear alopecic patch over the frontal scalp. Linear alopecia areata may present as a close differential in the incipient stages of LSCS in the pediatric population, especially when the binding down and pigmentary changes characteristic of LSCS have not developed. Histopathology may also be noncontributory in such scenarios. We hereby report a case of linear alopecia in a 5-year-old Indian girl and highlight the role of trichoscopic evaluation in clinching the diagnosis. This emphasizes the importa

[Orthopedic management of localized linear scleroderma in children: a case report].

INTRODUCTION: Localized scleroderma is the most common form of sclerosis in children; it has an incidence of 2.7 per 100,000 inhabitants, with a predilection for the Caucasian and female races of 2.4 to 4.1 per male. The common denominator is the connective tissue-level condition, causing a variety of clinical presentation ranging from localized sclerotic circumscribed plaques affecting the skin, to deeper conditions that attack muscle and bone tissue, leaving aesthetic consequences and/or disabling deformities in the patient. OBJECTIVE: Case presentation and surgical management. The data pre

A case of linear scleroderma "en coup de sabre" with strabismus fixus in a child.

Scleroderma, "en coup de sabre" is a rare disorder, characterized by linear depressed scarring at frontoparietal area of the face, seldom associated with ophthalmological findings. Extraocular muscle involvement and paralytic strabismus are rarely associated with linear scleroderma. Here we are reporting a case of unilateral linear scleroderma in an 8-year-old child, with features of strabismus fixus secondary to fibrosed medial rectus (MR) muscle, enophthalmos and en coup de saber (sword-like scar) on the eyebrow. MRI orbit was suggestive of the bulky MR and the inferior rectus muscle. MR rec

AF1q inhibited T cell attachment to breast cancer cell by attenuating Intracellular Adhesion Molecule-1 expression.

China appears to consistently lag behind developed countries like the US, Japan, and the nations of Europe in the development of pharmaceuticals, putting China in an embarrassing situation. In fact, China is still dependent on foreign imports for most highly effective cures to major diseases such as cancer, diabetes, hepatitis, and neurodegenerative disease. There is no denying the fact that governmental support, and especially a signifi cant amount of fi nancial support and political assistance to include government restructuring, is needed for the establishment of new drug Research and Devel

Cone beam computed tomography for the assessment of linear scleroderma of the face.

BACKGROUND: To date, standardized methods for assessing the disease progression of linear scleroderma of the face (LSF) are lacking. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) may represent a reliable tool for assessing linear scleroderma of the face (LSF). METHODS: Ten patients with LSF and five age-matched controls underwent CBCT assessment. The transverse sections at three anatomic levels of the maxillofacial bones were analyzed. Measurements of soft tissue and total thickness of both affected and unaffected side of the face were made by a standardized method

Characterization and Treatment of Unilateral Facial Muscle Spasm in Linear Scleroderma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Linear scleroderma has been associated with muscle spasms ipsilateral to skin lesions. Typically, spasms are located in trigeminal innervated muscles, leading to hemimasticatory spasm (HMS). CASE REPORT: We report a case of linear scleroderma associated with spasm of muscles innervated not only by the trigeminal but also by the facial nerve. DISCUSSION: We review the patient's successful treatment with incobotulinumtoxinA, a formulation of botulinum toxin that has not been reported for use in this condition.

Progressive Hemifacial Atrophy and Linear Scleroderma En Coup de Sabre: A Spectrum of the Same Disease?

Similar clinical and histhopathological features in progressive hemifacial atrophy and linear scleroderma en coup de sabre are well known. Trauma may predispose to the development of both diseases. The lack of association with anti-Borrelia antibodies was shown in both cases as well. The otolaryngological and endocrine disorders may be associated findings in both diseases. However, there are certain differences in neurological and ophthalmological changes in the diseases.

Juvenile Scleroderma-What has Changed in the Meantime?

BACKGROUND: Juvenile scleroderma is a rarely seen chronic connective tissue disorder characterized by stiffening of the skin. The frequency of the disease was reported as one per million. According to organ involvement, the disease is divided into two main forms: systemic and localized scleroderma. OBJECTIVE: Since it is uncommon in children, many aspects of the disease remain discussable. With this review, we aimed to revise recent findings and new developments in this rare condition. METHOD: A systematic literature research was performed, using the following medical databases: Pubmed/ Medl

Disease course and long-term outcome of juvenile localized scleroderma: Experience from a single pediatric rheumatology Centre and literature review.

Juvenile Localized Scleroderma (JLS) is a rare disorder that may cause severe aesthetic sequelae and functional disability. To date, data on natural history and long-term outcome are discordant and difficult to compare due to the heterogeneity of clinical subtypes, treatments and methods to evaluate activity and outcome in previous studies. A retrospective and cross-sectional study including 133 patients followed between January 1991 and December 2016 was conducted at our Pediatric Rheumatology Centre. Disease course was drawn by retrospective analysis of patients' clinical features, treatment

Collagen-enriched serpiginous skin lesion in a cat resembling the linear form of localized scleroderma in humans.

Localized scleroderma (LS) is a sclerotic skin disorder rarely reported in the veterinary literature. We herein report the first case of a linear LS-like skin lesion in a cat. A 1-year-old castrated male Himalayan cat was presented with a 1-month history of an alopecic, indurated, serpiginous, branched skin lesion on the dorsal cervical to scapular area. The cat had no history of trauma, although a topical spot-on endectocide had been applied near the lesion. Histopathological examination revealed a focal area of hyperplastic dermal collagen with the absence of pilosebaceous units. The cutaneo

Neuroimaging and clinical findings in a case of linear scleroderma en coup de sabre.

Linear scleroderma "en coup de sabre" is a subset of localized scleroderma with band-like sclerotic lesions typically involving the frontoparietal regions of the scalp. En coup de sabre and Parry-Romberg syndrome are variants of linear morphea on the head and neck that can be associated with neurologic manifestations. On imaging, patients may have lesions in the cerebrum ipsilateral to the scalp abnormality. We present a case of an 8-year-old girl with a left frontoparietal "en coup de sabre" scalp lesion and describe the neuroimaging findings of frontoparietal white matter lesion discovered i

Histopathologic Findings of Linear Scleroderma Displaying Focal Trichiasis Secondary to Tarsal Thinning.

Linear scleroderma en coup de sabre with ophthalmic findings has been previously described in the literature on numerous occasions. A 57-year-old woman presented with focal trichiasis secondary to tarsal thinning, adjacent to a linear brow and forehead deformity consistent with linear scleroderma en coup de sabre. Cases of linear scleroderma en coup de sabre involving the eyelids have been reported, most often with madarosis, ptosis, or skin atrophy; however, to the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of linear scleroderma associated with trichiasis and involvement of the deepe

Remission of seizures with immunosuppressive therapy in Parry-Romberg syndrome and en coup de sabre linear scleroderma: Case report and brief review of the literature.

Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) is characterized by progressive atrophy of facial skin, soft tissues, muscle, and bone. En coup de sabre syndrome is a form of linear scleroderma (LS) involving the skin of the frontoparietal forehead and scalp. Both conditions can be associated with neurologic findings, including seizures. We explore a case in which skin findings and seizure burden improved with methotrexate therapy.

Facial solitary morphea profunda presenting with painful trigeminal neuropathy: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Localized facial scleroderma usually presents as frontal linear morphea or progressive hemifacial atrophy. Only isolated cases of trigeminal painful neuropathy have been described. CASE REPORT: A 43-year-old woman developed an oval lesion on the right cheek. After 1 year, she noticed constant "pulling" pain and episodes of lancinating pain, both spontaneous and triggered by chewing and cold drinks. She was diagnosed with solitary morphea profunda and CT scan, ultrasonography, cranial MRI and biopsy were completed. Methylprednisolone (1 gr/day for 3 days) was prescribed. For pain,

New Features for Measuring Disease Activity in Pediatric Localized Scleroderma.

OBJECTIVE: To identify clinical features that define disease activity in pediatric localized scleroderma (LS), and determine their specificity and importance. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter prospective study of patients with active and inactive LS skin lesions. A standardized evaluation of a single designated study lesion per subject was performed at 3 visits. We evaluated the pattern and correlation between assessed features and physician's global assessments of activity (PGA-A). RESULTS: Ninety of 103 subjects had evaluable data; 66 had active and 24 inactive disease. Subjects had sim

A surgical approach to linear scleroderma using Medpor and dermal fat graft.

Linear scleroderma en coup de sabre (LScs) is a variant of localized scleroderma. This disease typically occurs in patients in their 20s or younger individuals and predominantly occurs in the forehead area. A 26-year-old man with linear scleroderma was surgically treated at our center with Medpor (porous polyethylene) and dermal fat graft for the forehead lesion. After 26 months of postoperative follow-up, the depressed lesion that appeared scarred as well as the margins improved significantly. The surgical treatment of LScs using Medpor and dermal fat graft is an effective treatment modality

Linear lipoatrophy following intra-articular triamcinolone acetonide injection mimicking linear scleroderma.

A 12-year-old female with oligoarticular juvenile inflammatory arthritis developed an atrophic linear plaque involving the left medial forearm and proximal arm 7 months after intra-articular triamcinolone injection for arthritis. The plaque spontaneously resolved without treatment over approximately one year. It is important to recognize this rare complication of intra-articular steroid injection in order to avoid potential misdiagnosis as linear scleroderma and subsequent immunosuppressive treatment.

A 26-Year Experience with Microsurgical Reconstruction of Hemifacial Atrophy and Linear Scleroderma.

BACKGROUND: Parry Romberg disease (hemifacial atrophy) and linear scleroderma (coup de sabre) are progressive, usually unilateral facial atrophies of unknown cause. The gold standard treatment for these patients has been microsurgical reconstruction following the "burning out" of the facial atrophy and stable contour for 2 years. METHODS: The authors report their experience treating patients with hemifacial atrophy and linear scleroderma with free tissue transfers between 1989 and 2016. A modified parascapular flap based on the circumflex scapular artery was most commonly used. RESULTS: A to
