Calcinosis Prevalence in Autoimmune Connective Tissue Diseases-A Retrospective Study.

Background/Objectives: Calcinosis cutis is the deposition of insoluble calcium salts, which may cause inflammation, ulceration, pain, and restricted joint mobility. It rarely develops in damaged tissues (dystrophic subtype), most frequently in autoimmune connective tissue diseases (CTDs), but there is very limited data on the prevalence. Also, therapy remains an unsolved issue. In this study, we aimed to collect data on the prevalence of calcinosis in CTD patients to highlight that it is a considerable problem. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in our department to assess the epidem

A Rare Case of Calcinosis Cutis Presenting to a Tertiary Care Hospital in Rural Maharashtra.

Calcinosis cutis is a common ailment of the skin, caused by the accumulation of calcium salts in the subcutaneous regions, though there are rare case reports from rural Maharashtra region. This condition is usually asymptomatic and might manifest as a single growth or several different-sized growths. Its clinical presentation is observed as nodules or plaques without causing injury to underlying tissues. The condition is reported to be a secondary presentation to trauma, malignancies, and connective tissue diseases and has multifactorial underlying etiologies. Recommendation for treatments inc

Eruptive syringomas with associated calcinosis cutis-A case report and literature review of this association.

We report the case of a 9-year-old boy presenting with eruptive syringomas and macroscopic lesions of calcinosis cutis resembling subepidermal calcified nodules. Literature review revealed eruptive syringomas can be associated with calcinosis cutis with several different presentations. In this report, we review the five different presentations and associations of eruptive syringomas and calcinosis cutis, which to our knowledge has not been categorized before.

Intravenous treatment of calcinosis cutis with sodium thiosulfate - A case series.

Calcinosis cutis is defined as the deposition of calcium salts in the skin. The dystrophic form is the most common and usually occurs in chronic inflammatory processes associated with collagenoses. Therapeutic options include surgical excision as well as a few pharmacological treatments. Overall, the evidence for the known therapeutic interventions is very limited and there is a lack of valid recommendations. Intravenous sodium thiosulfate has been used successfully in the treatment of calciphylaxis. In our case series, five patients with dystrophic calcinosis cutis received intravenous sodium

Updated solution for diagnosis and management of calcinosis cutis: A retrospective review.

Calcinosis cutis is classified into 5 main types: dystrophic, metastatic, idiopathic, iatrogenic, and calciphylaxis. However, it is occasionally misdiagnosed as a malignancy and its management remains challenging. Therefore, in this study, we report our diagnostic and treatment experiences with patients with calcinosis cutis and suggest strategies for improving patient care. This retrospective study included 7 patients (4 men, 3 women; 44.4 ± 32.0 years old) who visited our hospital between March 2013 and December 2022 and were diagnosed with calcinosis cutis through histopathological procedur

Calcinosis Cutis Inducing "Syringomatoid" Eccrine Hyperplasia: An Extremely Rare Example.

Reactive "syringomatoid" eccrine proliferations are a well-established phenomenon, which can show similar but less extensive histological features of a syringoma. The cut-off between syringomatoid hyperplasia and syringomas is subjective and given the considerable morphological overlap, it is possible they represent two points on the same spectrum. Syringomatoid hyperplasia has been associated with several conditions including neoplasms and inflammatory dermatoses. Herein, we describe an extremely rare case of syringomatoid hyperplasia occurring with calcinosis cutis in a 54-year-old Caucasian

Leg Ulceration with Infected Calcinosis Cutis Mimicking Osteomyelitis: A Case Report.

Calcified tissue exposed in a leg ulcer can become infected and develop into a nidus of infection leading to sepsis. This case details a patient with a leg wound secondary to skin biopsy. This leg ulceration did not heal due to an underlying calcified mass and led to five hospital admissions for sepsis. She was diagnosed as having calcinosis cutis, which was suspected to be the source of her infections. The calcified mass was resected, and she healed uneventfully without further infections. Calcified soft-tissue masses should be considered in nonhealing leg ulcers and ulcers with multiple recu

Hard as stone: an exuberant form of calcinosis cutis.

Dermatomyositis (DM) is an immune-mediated myopathy characterized by proximal skeletal muscle weakness, muscle inflammation, and distinct skin manifestations. Calcinosis cutis, involving the deposition of insoluble calcium salts in the soft tissues, affects approximately 8% of DM patients1 and poses significant treatment challenges. It can complicate with inflammation, ulceration, pain, and local and systemic infections, resulting in considerable morbidity. We present the case of a 69-year-old-woman with dermatomyositis who developed an exuberant form of calcinosis cutis.

A Rare Case of Isolated Extrapulmonary Sarcoidosis With Renal Involvement Sans Pulmonary Findings: Diagnostic Challenges and Clinical Insights.

The cause of sarcoidosis is unknown, and it affects multiple systems with granulomas. Lung lesions are typical, but extrapulmonary findings, especially lymphadenopathy, are present in a significant number of cases. Isolated renal involvement is rare. The presence of noncaseating granulomas on biopsy is a hallmark of sarcoidosis. We present the case of a 59-year-old male with recurrent renal stones who presented with renal failure. The initial diagnosis was challenging due to normal chest imaging and no pulmonary involvement. However, his delayed presentation of calcinosis cutis, an increase in

Excessive collagen fiber deposition in idiopathic scrotal calcinosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic scrotal calcinosis (ISC) is a manifestation of idiopathic calcinosis cutis, and its etiology is still unknown. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 36-year-old patient manifested multiple gradually increasing yellowish-white scrotal nodules with occasional itching and stinging in the past 6 years and was successfully cured via surgical excision. The laboratory test combined with pathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of ISC. Like pathological calcinosis in other soft tissues, a large amount of collagen fiber deposition was observed around the calcification nodule, sugg

Treatment of Calcinosis in Dermatomyositis-Case Report and Review.

Background/Objectives: Calcinosis cutis (CC) is a condition that may develop in the course of several autoimmune connective tissue diseases (ACTDs). Among these, the conditions most frequently associated with CC are systemic sclerosis (SSc) and dermatomyositis (DM). Despite both the prevalence and diversity of available treatment options, therapeutic recommendations remain not fully established due to a limited number of studies and lack of unambiguous evidence regarding their effectiveness. Case Presentation: We report two cases of patients with DM and concomitant massive cutaneous calcificat

Idiopathic calcinosis cutis of scrotum (ICCS): excision with scrotoplasty.

Scrotal calcinosis is an infrequent benign pathological condition characterised by the presence of multiple calcified nodules on the skin of the scrotum. Despite the formulation of several theories, the precise pathogenesis of this condition remains a subject of controversy within the scientific community. The predominant concern associated with scrotal calcinosis is of an aesthetic nature, and histological examination serves as the definitive method for confirmation of the diagnosis. The manifestation of scrotal nodules and cysts is an uncommon occurrence, and in cases where these manifestati

Hyperphosphatemic Familial Tumoral Calcinosis.

Hyperphosphatemic familial tumoral calcinosis (HFTC) is a rare, autosomal recessive condition characterized by fibroblast growth factor 23 signaling pathway dysregulation, hyperphosphatemia and ectopic calcifications (which manifest as joint motion limitations), inflammatory bony pain, and disability. Given the rarity and multiorgan involvement of HFTC, a multidisciplinary approach including Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Dentistry, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, and Genetics is necessary for diagnosis and treatment. We present a multidisciplinary diagnostic and treatment approach for a
