OBJECTIVE: Cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa (CPAN) is a necrotizing vasculitis of the middle-size vessels, confined to the skin. We conducted a systematic review in order to identify studies evaluating the different treatment modalities used in CPAN.
METHODS: This systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines, registered in PROSPERO: CRD42020222195. PubMed/Medline databases were searched from inception to December of 2020 using the terms: (Polyarteritis nodosa[Title/Abstract]) AND ((therapy[Title/Abstract]) OR (management[Title/Abstract]) OR (treatment[Title/Abstract]))' and 'C

Zoledronic acid, an amino-bisphosphonate, is an antiresorptive drug given intravenously. It is commonly used for the treatment of severe postmenopausal osteoporosis, and it is also used for other types of osteoporosis, management of bone metastasis, multiple myeloma, hypercalcemia, and Paget's disease. The use varies according to these diseases. The drug is usually well-tolerated with the most common side effects being acute-phase reactions with weakness and musculoskeletal pain as well as gastrointestinal effects. However, the increase in usage of zoledronic acid has produced rare reports of

UNLABELLED: Levamisole was initially prescribed for the treatment of intestinal worms. Because of immunomodulatory properties, levamisole has been used in inflammatory pathologies and in cancers in association with 5-fluorouracil. Levamisole is misused as a cocaine adulterant. Post-marketing reports have implicated levamisole in the occurrence of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and its use is now limited in Europe and North America. In contrast, all other parts of the World continue to use single-dose levamisole as an anthelmintic. The aim of this study was to identify ADRs reported after levami

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) vasculitis (IgAV), previously called Henoch-Schönlein purpura, is characterized by IgA-dominant immune deposits affecting small vessels and often involves the skin, gastrointestinal tract, joints, and kidneys. IgAV is the most common cause of systemic vasculitis in children. The long-term prognosis is dependent on renal involvement: IgAV with nephritis (IgAVN) can progress to renal failure. IgAVN is an inflammatory disease, providing a rationale for the use of corticosteroids. However, data supporting the use of corticosteroids in patients with established IgAVN of any s

OBJECTIVE: Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a recently recognized heterogeneous, subacute, and usually silent autoimmune disease involving many organs with protean manifestations. However, high IgG4 in serum is not necessarily indicating an IgG4-RD. The aims of this study were to investigate the clinical relevance of high serum IgG4 level in IgG4-RD or non IgG4-RD patients, and to see if IgG4-RD in Taiwan differs from that in other parts of the world.
METHODS: Eight hundred forty-five patients with high IgG4 were retrospectively reviewed from January 2002 to May 2020 in Taipei V

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare, and often challenging to diagnose, inflammatory disorder with relatively high rates of morbidity and mortality. Central to the diagnosis of PG is histologic evaluation and exclusion of other entities. Large-scale studies investigating the proportion of patients receiving a thorough diagnostic work-up, as well as prevalence studies regarding comorbidities and systemic treatment in PG using claims-based data, are sparse. Our objective was to identify patients diagnosed with PG and describe the diagnostic work-up and prevalence of common comorbidities and ther

Arising from the biliary tract, cholangiocarcinoma is a rare and aggressive epithelial cancer. According to the primary site, it can be further classified into intrahepatic, perihilar and distal types. Due to the lack of symptoms early in the disease course, most patients are diagnosed at advanced stages. Being not candidates for curative surgical management, these patients are treated with palliative systemic chemotherapy, and their prognosis remains poor. Using radioisotopes like yttrium-90 -labeled microspheres (90Y), radioembolization represents a local approach to treat primary and second

Over the last 25 years, inhibition of Janus kinases (JAKs) has been pursued as a modality for treating various immune and inflammatory disorders. While the clinical development of JAK inhibitors (jakinibs) began with the investigation of their use in allogeneic transplantation, their widest successful application came in autoimmune and allergic diseases. Multiple molecules have now been approved for diseases ranging from rheumatoid and juvenile arthritis to ulcerative colitis, atopic dermatitis, graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD) and other inflammatory pathologies in 80 countries around the worl

Eosinophilic angiocentric fibrosis (EAF) is an infrequent and slowly progressive disease, represented by fibroinflammatory lesions of unknown origin, which mainly involves the sinonasal structures and upper respiratory tract. Occasionally, it can affect the orbit and ocular adnexa causing symptoms such as proptosis, globe displacement and periorbital edema. In very rare cases, ocular manifestation as an orbital inflammatory pseudotumor can be the primary localization of the disease. Current literature proposes a relation between EAF and immunoglobulin G4-related disease spectrum. We describe t

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous reactions after COVID-19 vaccination have been commonly reported; however, histopathologic features and clinical correlations have not been well characterized.
METHODS: We evaluated for a history of skin biopsy all reports of reactions associated with COVID-19 vaccination identified in an international registry. When histopathology reports were available, we categorized them by reaction patterns.
RESULTS: Of 803 vaccine reactions reported, 58 (7%) cases had biopsy reports available for review. The most common histopathologic reaction pattern was spongiotic dermatitis, w

Rheumatic diseases are various painful conditions that affect joints, bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. Arthritis is a typical condition of rheumatic disease. Although rheumatoid arthritis is a representative rheumatic disease, various diseases other than rheumatoid arthritis can also affect joints, and differential diagnosis of rheumatic diseases is often difficult owing to the similar clinical manifestations. However, accurate diagnosis is crucial for an appropriate treatment strategy. The utility of fluorine 18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT has been established, and it is

Cutaneous polyarteritis nodosum (CPAN) is a vasculitis of small and medium-sized muscular arteries of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue with no associated systemic involvement. A common presentation of CPAN can be misinterpreted as a non-invasive form of livedoid vasculitis, synonymous with the "atrophie blanche" which similarly presents as ivory-white stellate-shaped scars. Although hyperpigmentation can also be present, as seen in our 47-year-old female patient, cutaneous polyarteritis nodosum is unique due to the etiology of the inflammatory illness which requires a deep, segmented skin bi

The skin is one of the most frequently involved organs in primary systemic and secondary vasculitis; moreover, a vasculitis can occur as single organ vasculitis, limited to the skin. For most types of vasculitis, the lower extremities constitute common sites with clinical symptoms of palpable purpura, nodules, and ulcers. In histopathology of cutaneous vasculitis, it is of utmost importance to correctly identify the vessel types involved and to discriminate between vasculitic vessel damage, unspecific reactive vessel changes, vascular occlusive diseases, noninflammatory purpura, or perivascula

Immunoglobulin A vasculitis (IgAV), also known as Henoch-Schönlein Purpura, is one of the most common kind of systemic vasculitis in children, and due to the involvement of small blood vessels throughout the body, this disease can cause a variety of symptoms in different organs. Our aim was to review the data on various systemic manifestations of IgAV. A research of the literature was performed in PubMed database, utilizing the MeSH terms "IgA vasculitis" and "Henoch Schönlein Purpura". According to the predetermined structure of the manuscript, we extracted and sorted out the relevant data. C

BACKGROUND: Acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy (AHEI), a benign and self-limited disease, can be easily mistaken to be a number of diseases with similar dermatological manifestations but with potentially adverse outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to familiarize pediatricians with the natural history, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and management of AHEI.
METHODS: A PubMed search was conducted in February 2020 in Clinical Queries using the key terms "acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy" OR "Finkelstein disease" OR "Seidlmayer disease". The search strategy included meta-analyses, rando

Immune checkpoint inhibitors have proven to be efficacious for a broad spectrum of solid organ malignancies. These monoclonal antibodies lead to cytotoxic T-cell activation and subsequent elimination of cancer cells. However, they can also lead to immune intolerance and immune-related adverse event (irAEs) that are new and specific to these therapies. Cutaneous irAEs are the most common, arising in up to 34% of patients on PD-1 inhibitors and 43% to 45% on CTLA-4 inhibitors. The most common skin manifestations include maculopapular eruption, pruritus, and vitiligo-like lesions. A grading syste

INTRODUCTION: Immunoglobulin A vasculitis (IgAV) is the most common form of childhood systemic vasculitis. It is mostly self-limiting and characterized by skin, joint, gastrointestinal tract, and kidney involvement. Microribonucleic acids (miRNAs) are 18-25 base-long non-coding RNA group acting on gene expression. They have been shown to be effective on the immune system studies to date.
METHOD: In our study, 24 IgAV children with skin and joint involvement and 24 healthy children were included. Five different miRNAs (miR-33, miR-34, miR-122, miR-204, and miR451) known to be expressed in plas

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV) is a small vessel vasculitis that can be limited to the skin but may also affect other organs. Often, its cause is unknown. LCV has previously been reported to occur with the reactivation of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6). Here, we report a second instance of HHV-6 reactivation in a 43-year-old woman with idiopathic cutaneous LCV.
CASE DESCRIPTION: In this case, the patient was immunocompetent, and testing revealed that she had inherited chromosomally integrated human herpesvirus 6 variant A (iciHHV6-A) with a parallel skin infection of

Purpura can be a clinical manifestation of various diseases. The causes of purpura are divided into two main categories: thrombocytopenia and vasculopathies. Cutaneous vasculitis belongs to the latter group. Cutaneous vasculitis should be considered a symptom rather than a medical entity. Some forms of cutaneous vasculitis are limited to the skin and are known as isolated cutaneous vasculitis, while other forms may be part of a systemic disease with a more serious prognosis. It is essential to clarify the type and severity of the disease for optimal patient care. A delay in the identification
