Pyogenic Granuloma with Onychomadesis following Plastic Cast Immobilization: A Case Report in a Pediatric Patient.

INTRODUCTION: Pyogenic granuloma development following plaster cast immobilization is rare, with only 17 reported cases previously. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we present a case of the youngest patient to date, an 11-year-old male, who developed a pyogenic granuloma on his left thumbnail after cast immobilization for a left wrist and elbow fracture. His fracture was complicated by wound infection, ulnar nerve injury, and avascular necrosis. Following cast removal, a pyogenic granuloma developed on his left thumbnail that was recalcitrant to treatment with timolol, and surgical resection was reco

Autologous Fibrin Glue in Pterygium Surgery as an Alternative to Commercial Fibrin Glue.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of autologous fibrin glue in pterygium surgery, comparing it with commercial fibrin glue in terms of postoperative complications, graft stability, and recurrence rate. METHODS: A prospective, randomized, double-blind study was conducted, involving 42 patients with primary pterygium who underwent autologous conjunctival-limbal transplantation. The graft was fixed using autologous fibrin glue (Group 1, G1) or commercial fibrin glue (Group 2, G2). All patients underwent surgery performed by the same surgeon and were reevaluat

Successful Diode Laser Management of a Lip Pyogenic Granuloma in a Patient With Anemia.

Introduction: Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a benign vascular lesion prone to significant bleeding when manipulated. High-power lasers provide key advantages, including precise incision, vaporization, and hemostasis, when managing such lesions, enhancing both intraoperative efficiency and postoperative recovery. Methods: This report describes the diagnosis and surgical excision of a large PG on the lower lip of an anemic patient using a high-power diode laser. Results: A 30-year-old female patient presented with a nodular, erythematous, pedunculated lesion with firm consistency and an ulcerated s

A red nodule in the umbilicus of an older man.

This case report describes an interesting example of a syringocystadenoma papilliferum lesion presenting in a 72-year-old man. He presented with a 10-month history of a red nodule in his umbilicus with unexplained weight loss and reduced appetite. The patient had a background of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, treated prostate cancer and pemphigus vulgaris that had previously been treated with azathioprine. The nodule would occasionally bleed with trauma, but there were otherwise no associated symptoms. Physical examination revealed a 12 × 12 mm firm red nodule within the umbilicus with

Surgical and Prosthetic Management of a Peripheral Giant Cell Granuloma Around Dental Implants: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

A peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is a benign fibrous connective tissue entity described as a tumor-like hyperplasia that appears on the gingiva and alveolar ridges. Histopathologically, a PGCG is characterized by the presence of multinuclear giant cells and originates from periodontal membrane or periosteal cells. PGCG is considered a reactive lesion resulting from chronic traumatic or irritating factors, such as calculus accumulation, food impaction, or inadequate dental restorations. The purpose of this article is the presentation of a case of PGCG in an edentulous area around dental

Conjunctival Pyogenic Granuloma Management in Bhutan: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Conjunctival pyogenic granuloma is a benign vascular tumor that typically occurs following an eye injury, trauma, after an eye surgery, or during pregnancy due to hormonal changes. The granulomas are commonly seen at the traumatic or the surgical wound site, where improper wound healing leads to the formation of the granuloma. However, in some cases, the cause of the granuloma remains unknown. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old female presented to the Ophthalmology Outpatient Department at the Central Regional Referral Hospital in Gelephu, Bhutan, with a progressively enlarging, red

Solitary intraoral pyogenic granuloma in neurofibromatosis type 1: diagnostic conundrum.

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder characterised by benign tumours and cutaneous lesions, including neurofibromas. This case report describes a boy in his early 10s with NF1 who presented with an oral swelling initially suspected to be a neurofibroma. However, histopathological analysis revealed the lesion to be a solitary pyogenic granuloma. The patient's clinical presentation included multiple café-au-lait spots and neurofibromas, consistent with NF1. MRI of jaws suggested a non-infiltrative benign mass, and excisional biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of pyogenic granuloma, w

Profuse Bleeding From a Pyogenic Granuloma As the First Clue to von Willebrand Disease in a Pediatric Patient.

A 12-month-old female presented with a friable, hemorrhagic papule on the right lateral inferior eyelid, clinically consistent with a pyogenic granuloma. Although pyogenic granulomas are known to bleed, the extent of hemorrhage in this case was unusual and occurred after minor trauma. The patient's father, an emergency medicine resident, injected lidocaine with epinephrine and applied pressure at home to control the bleeding. Notably, the patient's mother has a history of von Willebrand disease, prompting concern for an underlying inherited bleeding disorder. The severity of bleeding led to re

Successful Management of Delayed Postoperative Hemorrhage Following Chalazion Excision Using Oral Tranexamic Acid.

A 59-year-old man presented with bilateral chalazia refractory to conservative management. Following excision, histopathology confirmed the diagnosis. Seven days postoperatively, he developed spontaneous, painless bleeding from the left upper eyelid. Follow-up examination suggested a small pyogenic granuloma, which was excised, but recurrent hemorrhage persisted. Further hematologic workup was unremarkable. A short course of oral tranexamic acid was initiated, leading to complete resolution of bleeding within 24 hours. Delayed hemorrhage following chalazion excision is rare, with limited cases

Nail toxicity associated with anticancer agents.

In recent decades, cancer mortality rates have declined due to development of systemic antineoplastic agents targeting specific cancer pathways. Nail toxicities associated with these therapies are underrecognized by many and contribute significantly to patient morbidity. Nail changes from chemotherapy occur due to toxicity to continuously dividing nail matrix keratinocytes. Preventive measures, including avoiding repeated trauma from manicuring and artificial nails, regular nail trimming, and applying emollients to cuticles are essential in mitigating nail toxicities. Frozen gloves or socks ha

Vascular lesions of head and neck region: A pictorial review.

Vascular lesions in the head and neck region encompass a wide spectrum of malformations and tumors, ranging from hemangiomas to arteriovenous fistulas. The International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies classification system categorizes these anomalies into vascular tumors and malformations. Vascular tumors are further divided into benign, borderline, and malignant types, while vascular malformations are classified based on flow characteristics as high or low flow. Accurate delineation of these lesions is crucial due to their clinical implications, particularly their location and po

Polypoid Acral Amelanotic Melanoma: A Rare Variant Treated with Wide and Deep Surgical Excision.

Polypoid melanomas are unusual, as are amelanotic ones. Similarly, polypoid melanomas are not usually acral or amelanotic. They can be challenging to diagnose clinically, as they may resemble acral lentiginous nevus, polypoid Spitz nevus, eccrine poroma, schwannoma, pyogenic granuloma, verrucous carcinoma, fibrosarcoma, basal cell carcinoma, and pyoderma gangrenosum. We delineate a 64-year-old woman with an acral amelanotic polypoid melanoma on her sole. It was successfully removed surgically without limb amputation.

Understanding the Link Between Hormonal Changes and Gingival Health in Women: A Review.

Sex hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, undergo continuous fluctuations throughout a woman's life, beginning at puberty and extending through the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause. These hormonal variations significantly influence gingival health, leading to various periodontal conditions. During puberty, elevated levels of estrogen and progesterone enhance blood circulation to the gingival tissues, increasing their sensitivity to plaque and resulting in puberty gingivitis. This condition is characterized by gingival enlargement, redness, and bleeding. Throughout the mens

Corticosteroid injection for pyogenic granuloma of the tongue in a rare resembling ulcerative malignancy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a benign vasoproliferative lesion that usually occurs in the skin And mucosa. The clinical manifestations of PG are rapid growth, pedicled or broad base of a single red smooth papule, easily bleeding with minor lesions. Most of the oral lesions occur at the gingiva, And the extra-gingival lesions is less common, and the ulcerative type is even rarer. We present a case of ulcerative lesion located at the lateral margin of the tongue with a peripheral bulge for more than 5 years. It was initially suspected to be tongue cancer and was confirmed to be a PG by

Investigation of chronic limb ulcers in Northern Cameroon: a socio-anthropological and clinical perspective.

BACKGROUND: In September 2023, fifty cases of chronic limb ulcers of unknown origin were reported in six Health Districts (HDs) in Northern Cameroon. This disease, locally called "Ladde", was described as of mystical origin, transmitted by insect bites. We aimed to describe the cases, identify the cause and socio-anthropological considerations. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a mixed descriptive cross-sectional study in November 2023. A case was any person that had presented a skin ulcer on any of the four limbs for at least 4 weeks any time during the study period, suspected of infectious cause or

Cutaneous Presentations of Metastatic Carcinoma Breast: A Case Series.

Skin is an outer reflection of our overall health. Cutaneous metastases occur due to the persistence or recurrence of primary solid tumors. It occurs in 0.7 to 10.4% of all patients diagnosed with cancer, although they represent only 2% of all skin tumors. Cutaneous metastasis from breast carcinoma has varied presentations with different morphologies and appearances. It presents as red, firm papules, nodules, or plaques with either smooth, crusted, or ulcerated surfaces over ipsilateral chest wall. However, it can occur at some unusual sites like the scalp, eyelids, inframammary area, arms, um

Pyogenic Granuloma of the Larynx: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Pyogenic granulomas are benign, painless vascular tumors on the skin and mucosal surfaces. They are commonly found in the head and neck region, although their occurrence in the larynx is rare. The term "lobular capillary hemangioma" is now used to describe the histological appearance of these tumors more accurately. Predisposing factors for pyogenic granuloma of the larynx have been linked to prior traumatic injuries, such as intubation, previous surgeries, or laryngopharyngeal reflux. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old male visited our clinic with complaints of progressive dyspho
