Cutaneous adverse events induced by azacitidine in myelodysplastic syndrome patients: Case reports and a lesson from published work review.

Subcutaneous injection of azacitidine (AZA) is an important treatment option for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), which improves overall survival. In hematology, the incidence of AZA-induced cutaneous adverse events (AE) has been known to be relatively high, which has not been well recognized by dermatologists. Discontinuation of AZA can result in the deterioration of MDS disease activity. Therefore, on dermatological consultation, precise evaluation of AE severity and careful consideration is required for post-AE medication management. To enhance our understanding of AZA-induced cutaneous AE,

Increased levels of VEGF-C and macrophage infiltration in lipedema patients without changes in lymphatic vascular morphology.

Lipedema is a chronic adipose tissue disorder characterized by the disproportional subcutaneous deposition of fat and is commonly misdiagnosed as lymphedema or obesity. The molecular determinants of the lipedema remain largely unknown and only speculations exist regarding the lymphatic system involvement. The aim of the present study is to characterize the lymphatic vascular involvement in established lipedema. The histological and molecular characterization was conducted on anatomically-matched skin and fat biopsies as well as serum samples from eleven lipedema and ten BMI-matched healthy pat

Eosinophilic Fasciitis - Clinical Features and Therapeutic Management.

Eosinophilic fasciitis is a rare disease from the group of scleroderma-like connective tissue diseases with unclear etiopathogenesis. It may be occasionally accompanied with other eosinophilic or autoimmune dysfunctions (1,2). Lack of international diagnostic criteria and treatment consensus may lead to diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties. The 61-year-old man with no significant personal or family pathological history was admitted to the Dermatology Department presenting persistent induration for several months as well as erythema and pain of the shins that gradually extended to thighs and

Molecular profiling of a primary cutaneous signet-ring cell/histiocytoid carcinoma of the eyelid.

Primary cutaneous signet-ring cell/histiocytoid carcinoma of the eyelid is a rare and aggressive neoplasm. Fewer than 50 cases have been reported in the literature, and the genetic driving mutations are unknown. Herein, we present a case of this rare disease along with the results of molecular profiling via targeted next-generation sequencing. The patient is an 85-year-old man who presented with left eyelid swelling initially thought to be a chalazion. After no response to incision and drainage and antibiotics, an incisional biopsy was performed. Histopathologic sections revealed a proliferati

In vitro Antagonistic Activity of Endophytic Fungi Isolated from Shirazi Thyme (Zataria multiflora Boiss.) against Monosporascus cannonballus.

Transthoracic and transesophageal examinations should be considered as mutually complementary. Transesophageal echocardiography is performed in cases of a justified need to visualize structures that are poorly visible or invisible on transthoracic echocardiogram. Primary indications for transesophageal echocardiography include an assessment of cardiac source of embolism, suspected endocarditis, suspected prosthetic valve dysfunction, an assessment of thoracic aorta and other vessels, an assessment prior to valvular repairs and closures of septal defects, intraoperative monitoring of cardiac or

Giant Pelvic Neurofibroma in Patient with Plexiform Sciatic Neurofibroma and Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disease with an autosomal dominant type of inheritance. It is a multisystem disease in which, besides skin manifestations, there is a possibility for the involvement of other organs and systems, and an atypical variant of neurofibromatosis type 1 can also be observed- the so-called plexiform neurofibroma. In patients with this inherited disease, mortality is higher due to the existing risk for malignant transformation and development of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours (MPNSTs) or neurofibrosarcoma. CASE REPORT: We present a 25-year-old woma

C-C chemokine receptor 4 expression in CD8+ cutaneous T-cell lymphomas and lymphoproliferative disorders, and its implications for diagnosis and treatment.

AIMS: Patients with aggressive CD8+ cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCLs) progress rapidly and respond poorly to therapy. Confounding treatment planning, there is clinicopathological overlap between aggressive CD8+ CTCLs and other lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs). Hence, improved diagnostic methods and therapeutic options are needed. The aim of this study was to examine C-C chemokine receptor 4 (CCR4) expression as a diagnostic and therapeutic biomarker in CD8+ CTCLs/LPDs. METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty-nine cases (41 patients) with CD8+ CTCLs/LPDs were examined, including CD8+ mycosis fungoides

Eosinophilic Fasciitis Following Checkpoint Inhibitor Therapy: Four Cases and a Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND: Checkpoint inhibitor therapy is widely known to cause a number of immune-related adverse events. One rare adverse effect that is emerging is eosinophilic fasciitis, a fibrosing disorder causing inflammatory infiltration of subcutaneous fascia. It is characterized clinically by edema and subsequent induration and tightening of the skin and subcutaneous tissues. The condition is rare, yet at our institutions we have seen four cases in the past 3 years. We describe our 4 cases and review 11 other cases reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: We present four cases of eosinophil

Cold-Induced Dermatoses: Case Report and Review of Literature.

Cold panniculitis and perniosis are the most common cold-induced dermatologic disorders and are clinically characterized by indurated and erythematous nodules and plaques that develop at sites exposed to excessive cold and wet conditions. Cold panniculitis is most commonly seen in infants, but adult cases involving the thighs of equestrians are well known and have come to be known as equestrian cold panniculitis or equestrian perniosis. Recently, similar cases have been described in nonequestrian settings with the prolonged use of ice-packs or other cold-therapy devices. We describe the case o

Multiple subcutaneous metastases as the solitary presenting site of colorectal cancer.

Skin metastases, as a presenting symptom of gastrointestinal malignancies, are very rare and signify aggressive disease. They usually occur after a long period of diagnosis and along with other visceral metastases. We present the case of an 18-year-old male with diffuse subcutaneous metastases as a presenting feature and as the only site of distant metastases due to rectosigmoid adenocarcinoma. They clinically mimic benign skin lesions and the patient might not present to an oncologist. The diagnosis has to be established by skin biopsy, which will show tumor cell infiltration of the epidermis

T-cell receptor-δ expression and γδ+ T-cell infiltrates in primary cutaneous γδ T-cell lymphoma and other cutaneous T-cell lymphoproliferative disorders.

AIMS: The diagnosis of cutaneous γδ T-cell lymphoma (GDTCL) requires the identification of γδ chains of the T-cell receptor (TCR). Our aim in this study was, by using a new monoclonal antibody (mAb) against TCRδ, to evaluate TCRδ expression in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) skin tissue from TCRγ+ cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), and to assess TCRδ expression within a spectrum of other cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders (CLPDs). METHODS AND RESULTS: Twelve cases (10 patients) with TCRγ+ CTCL and 132 additional CLPD cases (127 patients) were examined, including mycosis fungoides

A solitary presentation of panniculitis in a patient with a history of breast cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Panniculits presents as an inflammation of the subcutaneous adipose tissue of the skin. In breast, panniculitis is very rare and is usually a manifestation of underlying inflammatory conditions. The typical presentation is palpable tender nodules, which in cases of breast panniculitis, triggers an extensive work up to exclude a malignancy. Herein we present a case of septal and lobar panniculitis in a female with clinical history of invasive ductal carcinoma. PRESENTATION OF THE CASE: A 52-year old female with past medical history of invasive breast carcinoma 5 years prior to th

Sortilin inhibition limits secretion-induced progranulin-dependent breast cancer progression and cancer stem cell expansion.

BACKGROUND: Cancer progression is influenced by genetic aberrations in the cancer cell population as well as by other factors including the microenvironment present within a tumour. Direct interactions between various cell types as well as cellular signalling via secreted cytokines can drive key tumourigenic properties associated with disease progression and treatment resistance. Also, cancer stem cell functions are influenced by the microenvironment. This challenging subset of cells has been linked to malignant properties. Within a screen, using in vivo like growth conditions, we identified p

Borrelia Lymphocytoma Mimicking Butterfly Rash in a Pediatric Patient.

A 5-year-old girl presented with a facial butterfly rash that persisted for 5 months without arthralgia, fever, malaise, photosensitivity, or other symptoms. Lupus erythematosus was clinically suspected. All blood tests were negative or within normal values. Skin biopsy showed a dense nodular superficial and deep inflammatory infiltrate of lymphocytes that reaches subcutaneous tissue. The most striking histopathological finding was plasma cells with some perifollicular accentuation. Borrelia polymerase chain reaction assay of the tissue was positive, and we made the diagnoses of borrelia lymph

Tumor-infiltrating immune cells as potential biomarkers predicting response to treatment and survival in patients with metastatic melanoma receiving ipilimumab therapy.

Monoclonal antibodies targeting immune checkpoints are gaining ground in the treatment of melanoma and other cancers, and considerable effort is made to identify biomarkers predicting the efficacy of these therapies. Our retrospective study was performed on surgical tissue samples (52 lymph nodes and 34 cutaneous/subcutaneous metastases) from 30 patients with metastatic melanoma treated with ipilimumab. Using a panel of 11 antibodies against different immune cell types, intratumoral immune cell densities were determined and evaluated in relation to response to ipilimumab treatment and disease

Gangrenous dermatitis in chickens and turkeys.

Gangrenous dermatitis (GD) is a disease of chickens and turkeys that causes severe economic losses in the poultry industry worldwide. Clostridium septicum, Clostridium perfringens type A, and occasionally Clostridium sordellii are considered the main causes of GD, although Staphylococcus aureus and other aerobic bacteria may also be involved in some cases of the disease. GD has become one of the most significant diseases of commercial turkeys in the United States. Several infectious and/or environmental immunosuppressive factors can predispose to GD. Skin lesions are considered to be the main

Hardness and Painful Lesion of the Breast.

Dear Editor, Lupus panniculitis or lupus profundus is a rare inflammatory complication found in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), or discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) (1). When the breast is involved, the term lupus mastitis (LM) is used. This disease involving the breast is rare, and the lesions may precede, coincide with, or occur later than the onset of other lupus lesions. Tissue biopsy is required to confirm the suspected diagnoses of LM. We report a case of a patient with lupus mastitis due to the important differential diagnosis. A 60-year-old woman presented with a pain
