We presented the case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma initially manifesting in bone marrow without lymph nodes' swelling and other extranodal lesion. A 68-year-old woman was suffering from general fatigue and fever. Because atypical cells were identified in the peripheral blood, a bone marrow puncture and random skin biopsy were performed. In myelogram, it was suspicious for myelodysplastic disease because lymphoma cells resembled other atypical hematopoietic cell. In biopsy specimen of bone marrow, atypical cells diffusely infiltrated, which could be called "paced bone marrow". On the other

UNLABELLED: Skin involvement in children with malignant processes usually appears at the same time or after the diagnosis of the primary tumour. We present the case of a girl with cutaneous involvement prior to the diagnosis of a malignant lymphoproliferative process. A previously healthy 5-month old girl who presented with an inflammatory subcutaneous lesion on the right foot. During hospital admission due to bronchiolitis at 7 months with associated pancytopenia while the myelogram showed myeloid and megakaryocytic hypoplasia, the abdominal and foot ultrasound were normal. After completing c

We observed 5 patients with subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) who were unusual, in that they also exhibited features of lupus erythematosus (LE). This observation is in keeping with a recent study that reported an increased rate of autoimmune disease, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), among patients with SPTCL. In all cases, attributes indicating SPTCL included an infiltrate of lymphocytes with pleomorphic nuclei involving subcutaneous lobules exhibiting a cytotoxic T-cell (CD3/CD8/betaF1) immunophenotype. Additionally, a high proliferation rate and a monoclona

BACKGROUND: Fibroblastic rheumatism is a unique fibro-proliferative disease affecting the skin and joints. It is characterized by distinctive clinical and histological features related to benign spindle-shaped cells proliferation. Pediatric reports are scarce in the literature.
OBJECTIVE: We describe here a new case in a 10-year-old boy and discuss the potential origin of the cell proliferation.
METHODS: Clinical findings, radiology, microscopic examination and outcome are reviewed. Histopathology and immunochemistry studies were performed on skin biospies using CD68, CD163, desmin, factor X

Perhaps, the most intriguing cutaneous sequela of Crohn's disease (CD) is 'metastatic' CD, defined as sterile granulomatous skin lesions arising at sites discontinuous from the gastrointestinal tract. Though various histopathologic patterns have been described, a lack of a large series has precluded a comprehensive characterization and distinction from the pathologic differential diagnoses. The histopathology features of 12 new cases of metastatic CD were reviewed. Non-suppurative granulomata with a slight cuff of lymphocytes in a nodular or diffuse pattern with an associated superficial and d

BACKGROUND: The most serious complication of subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN), a rare condition of the newborn characterized by indurated purple nodules, is hypercalcaemia. However, the mechanism for this hypercalcaemia remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the hypercalcaemia associated with SCFN involves expression of the vitamin D-activating enzyme 25-hydroxyvitamin D(3)-1alpha-hydroxylase (1alpha-hydroxylase) in affected tissue.
METHODS: Skin biopsies from two male patients with SCFN and hypercalcaemia were taken. The histological specimens were assessed using a polyclonal ant

BACKGROUND: In the field of organ transplantation, the effect of pretransplant humoral allosensitization on the organ transplant outcome has been highlighted. To clarify the correlation of presensitization with chronic rejection that can lead to a poor prognosis in transplant recipients, we examined humoral alloreactivity and allograft rejection in sensitized recipients by using a rat heterotopic tracheal transplant model.
METHODS: An MHC fully incompatible combination strain was used in this study. Lewis (LEW) rats sensitized by transplantation with Brown Norway (BN) skin grafts received tra

BACKGROUND: Microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) is a systemic antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody-associated vasculitis associated with necrotizing and crescentic glomerulonephritis and pulmonary capillaritis. MPA generally has a rapidly progressive clinical course, but there have been recent reports of slowly progressive cases.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the typical cutaneous findings of MPA, we recorded the clinical and histopathologic features of the cutaneous manifestations.
METHODS: Eight patients with MPA, who had presented with cutaneous manifestations between 2001 and 2005 in our departme

BACKGROUND: Although granulomatous arteritis is usually found in extracutaneous Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) lesions, the vasculitis in CSS cutaneous lesions typically shows small vessel vasculitis (leukocytoclastic vasculitis) without demonstrating the feature of granulomatous arteritis confirming the proper classification of CSS in the category of granulomatous vasculitis.
METHODS: Four deep excisional biopsies were obtained from three untreated CSS patients who presented with livedo reticularis and subcutaneous nodules. Tissue blocks were recut and submitted for hematoxylin and eosin and e

Vascular tumours are common lesions of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, but also occur in many other tissues and internal organs. The well-differentiated tumours consist of irregular anastomosing, blood-filled vascular channels that are lined by variably atypical endothelial cells. The less differentiated tumours may show solid strands and sheets, resembling carcinoma or lymphoma. Several growth factors, including basic fibroblast growth factor, transforming growth factors and vascular endothelial growth factor, play a role in tumour angiogenesis. Growth hormone (GH) is mitogenic for a variet

INTRODUCTION: Chronic lymphatic leukaemia (CLL) is the most frequent form of leukaemia in the adult population in western countries. Only 7.2% of the complications of CLL are neurological and most of them are secondary to an infection by herpes zoster virus.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 71-year-old female with B-type CLL in stage IV or type C that was progressing and becoming diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (Richter's syndrome), who developed an incomplete axonotmesis of the left peroneal nerve and numerous violet-coloured nodules under the skin in the left knee. Microscopic polyangiitis is a systemic small vessel vasculitis, which often has cutaneous and musculoskeletal features. Microscopic polyangiitis is a member of the family of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic auto-antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides and is strongly associated with anti-myeloperoxidase (MPO)-ANCA. Titres of MPO-ANCA may reflect disease activity and play a pathogenic role. Patients with microscopic polyangiitis usually present with erythematous macules on the extremities as the first cutaneous manifestation. Skin biopsy specimens from the erythema reveal small-sized vessels that ar

The term "morphea" includes a wide spectrum of clinical entities, varying from localized plaques of only cosmetic importance to deep lesions resulting in considerable morbidity for the patient. In fact, although survival rates are no different from that of the general population, localized scleroderma may be associated with development of substantial disability, as occurs in deep morphea and in pediatric patients (disabling pansclerotic morphea of children). We report a case of morphea profunda affecting a young man with severe, rapidly progressive, widespread skin involvement and focus on the

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicopathologic features, immunophenotypes and differential diagnosis of Kimura's disease (KD) and epithelioid hemangioma (EH).
METHODS: Nine cases of KD and three cases of EH were evaluated by light microscopy and immunohistochemistry.
RESULTS: In this series, KD occurred predominantly in males, whereas EH had a female predilection. Both KD and EH arose most frequently in the head and neck region. However, KD usually presented as multiple subcutaneous nodules or swellings and was accompanied by lymphadenopathy in some cases. On the other hand, EH appeared onl

Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) is a potent stimulus of connective tissue accumulation, and is implicated in the pathogenesis of scleroderma and other fibrotic disorders. Smad3 functions as a key intracellular signal transducer for profibrotic TGF-beta responses in normal skin fibroblasts. The potential role of Smad3 in the pathogenesis of scleroderma was investigated in Smad3-null (Smad3(-/-)) mice using a model of skin fibrosis induced by subcutaneous injections of bleomycin. At early time points, bleomycin-induced macrophage infiltration in the dermis and local TGF-beta productio

Reactive angioendotheliomatosis (RAE) is a rare disorder with clinical presentation of multiple cutaneous lesions. RAE mimics mainly Kaposi sarcoma (KS) and, rarely angiosarcoma, and it usually arises in association with other systemic disease. The associated disease is mostly chronic infection. RAE presents diagnostic problems for both the clinician and pathologist. We present RAE in a 46-year-old male patient with a history of alcoholism and pulmonary tuberculosis. Multiple, rapidly progressive, itching and burning, and focally confluent cutaneous erythematous and purple macules, plaques and

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Antigen presenting cells are inactive within tumor tissue because of local immunosuppression. Tumor infiltrating lymphocyte signal activation transducing mechanisms are also seriously impaired. Administration of granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor may lead to antigen-presenting cell recovery and interleukin-2 may restore local tumor infiltrating lymphocyte activation. Moreover, interleukin-2 increases the systemic lymphocyte population, an event which seems to correlate with a better prognosis. The present phase I-II study was carried out to examine whether intral
