BACKGROUND: Historically, kidney transplantation has been considered inappropriate for most patients with AL amyloidosis-associated kidney failure because of concerns about recurrent disease in the allograft and poor long-term survival. We report that repeated thermal perturbation by thermal cycling (TC) accelerates the formation rate of amyloid filaments at microliter volumes (10-200 μL) and produces a new conformation of zigzag-shaped filaments. Renomedullary interstitial cell tumors (RMICTs) are often incidentally detected lesions at autopsy or resection of the kidney for other reasons. The RMICTs have not been reported in renal allograft biopsy.
