BACKGROUND: Acute liver failure (ALF) is a clinical syndrome characterized by the sudden onset of coagulopathy and encephalopathy. The outcome is unpredictable and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. We reviewed our experience to identify the aetiology and study the outcome of acute liver failure.
METHODS: A total of 1237 patients who presented with acute liver failure between January 1992 and May 2008 were included in this retrospective study. Liver transplantation was undertaken based on the King's College Hospital criteria. Data were obtained from the units prospectively colle

INTRODUCTION: Acute hepatitis due to hepatitis a virus is usually a benign self-limiting disease conferring lifelong immunity. However, few cases have been reported in literature with fulminant hepatitis. We report this extremely rare case with multiorgan dysfunction including liver failure, hepatic encephalopathy, renal failure, pleural effusion, pericardial effusion and hematologic dysfunction as a sequale of this infection in an otherwise healthy male at the age of 18.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 18 years old Pakistani male presented with two days history of fever, cough, headache and vomiting.

A 40-year-old man, who had suffered from general malaise and brown urine during his stay in China, was admitted with remarkable jaundice and hepatocellular disorders soon after he returned to Japan. Because his coagulation test results worsened, he was transferred to our hospital. No evidence of hepatitis A-D virus infection, autoimmune hepatitis, or metabolic disorders was noticed. His prothrombin time was extended (18%), grade II encephalopathy appeared on the second hospital day, and fulminant hepatitis was diagnosed. Artificial liver support was introduced, and his hepatic coma and coagula

AIM: During the 1990s, a changing pattern of epidemiology of hepatitis A was reported in different populations of India. The present study was undertaken to investigate the molecular epidemiology of hepatitis A virus (HAV) strains over a period of 10 years.
METHODS: Stool/serum samples were collected from hepatitis A patients clinically presenting acute viral hepatitis and hepatic encephalopathy. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was performed to detect HAV-RNA. HAV genomes were examined by sequencing PCR products of VP1/2A junction (168 bp) and RNA polymerase (116 bp)

The only proven therapy for patients unlikely to recover from acute liver failure (ALF) is liver transplantation. Correct diagnosis of these individuals and rapid referral to a transplant center are crucial. We evaluated 12 pediatric patients with ALF who underwent liver transplantation (LT) at our institution during a 3-year period. The reasons for transplantation were hepatitis A (3 patients); non-A, non-E hepatitis (3); autoimmune hepatitis (1); fulminant Wilson's disease (3); Amanita phalloides (mushroom) poisoning (1); and hepatitis B and toxic hepatitis with leflunomide treatment (1). Hepatitis E previously known as enterically transmitted non-A, non-B hepatitis, is a self limiting infectious viral disease of developing countries. Various issues regarding the pathogenesis of liver injury and its natural history remain unanswered after two decades of its discovery. A small proportion of patients develop fulminant hepatic failure. Mortality is very high if it is associated with pregnancy, especially during third trimester. After establishment of hepatitis A virus as a cause of decompensation of chronic liver disease, now there are reports that hepatitis E viruses also does th
