Sialometry: aspects of clinical interest.

Whole saliva is a multiglandular secretion complex consisting of gingival fluid, desquamated epithelial cells, microorganisms, products of bacterial metabolism, food debris, leukocytes mucus from the nasal cavity and the pharynx. Saliva has many functions, including tissue repair, tamponage, protection, digestion, taste, antimicrobial action, maintaining tooth integrity and antioxidant defense system. A decrease in salivary flow (hyposalivation) is a common disorder and it is estimated that approximately 20% of the general population have this alteration. Hyposalivation may be due to diabetes

Periprosthetic tuberculosis of the knee joint treated with antituberculosis drugs: a case report.

We report a 55-year old man with periprosthetic tuberculosis infection following a total knee arthroplasty surgery performed during an active tuberculosis infection. The patient was conservatively treated with anti-tuberculosis drugs and retention of prosthesis. There was no recurrence during an 18-month follow-up period. Tuberculosis arthritis should be considered in the differential diagnosis in patients with osteoarthritis requiring replacement surgery. Conservative treatment with antituberculosis drugs may be an option in periprosthetic tuberculosis infections without loosening.

[Giardia lamblia as a rare cause of reactive arthritis].

Giardiasis is a disease of gut, which is caused by the non-invasive (it does not pass the gut/blood barrier) protozoan parasite Giardia lamblia. It infects humans and animals like beavers, dogs and cattle. Contaminated water or uncooked food is a major source of transmission and G. lamblia occurs worldwide. High-risk groups are young children, travellers and immunocompromised individuals. Good hand hygiene is necessary to prevent the transmission.

Efficacy of anakinra in gouty arthritis: a retrospective study of 40 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Gout is a common arthritis that occurs particularly in patients who frequently have associated comorbidities that limit the use of conventional therapies. The main mechanism of crystal-induced inflammation is interleukin-1 production by activation of the inflammasome. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of anakinra in gouty patients. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective review of patients receiving anakinra for gouty arthritis. We reviewed the response to treatment, adverse events and relapses. RESULTS: We examined data for 40 gouty patients (32 men; me

Presumed reactive polyarthritis and granulomatous vasculitis in a Mississippi sandhill crane (Grus canadensis pulla).

A 1.5-year-old female Mississippi sandhill crane (Grus canadensis pulla) was presented and managed for a polyarthritis of the intertarsal and tarsophalangeal articulations. Results of aerobic bacterial cultures, Mycoplasma species culture, and polymerase chain reaction testing of articular fluid did not identify any causative organisms. Results of radiographs and cytologic examination of articular fluid were consistent with an inflammatory, nonerosive polyarthritis. The arthritis did not improve with systemic anti-inflammatory and antibiotic treatment and with joint lavage. A large necrotic gr

Different profiles of onion bulb in CIDP and CMT1A in relation to extracellular matrix.

Hypertrophic neuropathy is usually intractable, and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease Type 1A (CMT1A) are the representative disorders. The two disorders are sometimes confused both clinically and pathologically. The aim of this study was to clarify the differences in the pathology of large onion bulbs, focusing on the extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins. Nine patients with CIDP and 14 with CMT1A were included. The opened interspaces in OB were frequently shown in CMT1A patients. In CIDP, interspaces of OB packed with collagen fibers were

[Clinical manifestations of pneumococcal infections and the current prevention options].

Pneumococcal infections continue to pose a serious medical problem. A broad range of serotypes, increasing resistance to antibiotics and high pathogenic potential of pneumococci are associated with development of various clinical forms of diseases. Some chronic diseases are an important predisposing factor for development of pneumococcal infections. The most common noninvasive forms of the disease are otitis, sinusitis, conjunctivitis; pneumonia is on the borderline between the invasive and noninvasive forms. Meningitis, sepsis, endocarditis and arthritis all belong to invasive pneumococcal di

Association between the evidence of human papilloma virus infection in bladder transitional cell carcinoma in men and cervical dysplasia in their spouses.

PURPOSE: Infectious complications following orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) represent a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in both adults and children. In adults, surgical site infections complicating OLT have been shown to significantly increase resource utilization, but their impact in children has not been studied. In this study we identify risk factors for surgical site infections in children undergoing primary OLT for end-stage liver disease and estimate their impact on patient survival, graft survival, length of stay, and charges. METHODS: All pediatric liver transplant

Chromatin modifying protein 1A (Chmp1A) of the endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT)-III family activates ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) for PanC-1 cell growth inhibition.

Chromatin modifying protein 1A (Chmp1A) is a member of the Endosormal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT)-III family whose over-expression induces growth inhibition, chromatin condensation, and p53 phosphorylation. p53 is a substrate for Ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM), which can be activated upon chromatin condensation. Thus, we propose that Chmp1A regulates ATM, and the nuclear localization signal (NLS) is required for ATM activation. Our data demonstrated that over-expression of full-length Chmp1A induced an increase in active, phosphorylated ATM in the nucleus, where they co
