Projected effects of removing school-entry vaccination requirements on measles transmission in Florida.

Florida's proposal to remove vaccine mandates in the state raises urgent questions about the state's vulnerability to measles resurgence. We develop and analyze an age-structured measles transmission model with heterogeneous contact patterns between children and adults, calibrated using data from the 2025 measles outbreak in Gaines County, Texas, and applied to Florida using state-specific demographic structure and measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination coverage. Using Florida-specific mixing patterns and demographic composition, we estimate the state's vaccine-induced herd immunity threshold

Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination under-recording in primary care in England: a two-stage cluster survey to inform vaccine optimisation.

INTRODUCTION: Achieving 95% coverage for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) is essential to controlling measles and achieving elimination status. Accurate coverage information is required to identify susceptible populations and inform public health action. This study aimed to estimate the extent of under-recording of MMR vaccinations in digitised primary care records, to inform vaccination optimisation activities. METHODS: We conducted a two-stage cluster survey of patients registered at GP practices, stratified by London and the rest of England, to determine MMR vaccination status and record t

Measles Vaccine Boosters in Immunocompromised Adults to Reduce Morbidity and Mortality From Acute Measles Infection: A Scoping Review.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness associated with significant global mortality, despite the availability of an effective vaccine. As vaccine hesitancy continues to increase following the COVID-19 pandemic, combined with a lack of measles-specific antiviral agents, the risk of outbreaks and epidemics remains elevated. Immunocompromised individuals have a higher risk of serious complications from measles, especially because the live-attenuated measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine may be contraindicated in severely immunocompromised patients. As such, these individuals depend on herd im

[Ultrasound diagnosis of fetal infections: current possibilities and limitations].

INTRODUCTION: Fetal infections, particularly those caused by TORCH agents (toxoplasmosis, other [syphilis, varicella-zoster, parvovirus B19], rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes), may significantly affect fetal growth and development, resulting in a substantial risk of morbidity and mortality. Since infections are mostly preventable causes of congenital anomalies, early diagnosis relies on serological and molecular testing and fetal ultrasound. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of fetal infections and their detectable ultrasound features. METHOD: This retrospective s

[TORCH infections during pregnancy: clinical significance, diagnosis, and treatment].

TORCH infections (toxoplasmosis, other [syphilis, varicella-zoster, parvovirus B19], rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes) constitute the classic group of congenital infections that may result in severe fetal and neonatal consequences. Transplacentally transmitted infections have been a critical component of prenatal care for decades. Although screening for this group of infections has been performed in Hungary since 1971, diagnostic approaches and screening strategies have undergone significant transformation. Current international recommendations, as well as national professional guidelines, no

IL-6 and TNFα are associated with depressive symptoms among men in a community-based cohort, with a tentative trend for IL-17A: Findings from the Shika Study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has conducted enhanced measles surveillance since 1998, the year endemic measles transmission was eliminated in Canada. The objective of this annual national measles surveillance report is to provide an epidemiologic summary of measles activity reported in Canada for 2019 in order to provide evidence to support the continued verification of Canada's measles elimination status. METHODS: Measles surveillance data are housed in the Canadian Measles and Rubella Surveillance System (CMRSS) database. Descriptive analyses of demographics and risk

Hybrid microneedle patch for administration of measles and rubella vaccine with an on-patient medical record.

Decentralized on-patient medical record (OPMR) storage would enable medical staff to access patients' medical information on demand, especially in low-resource settings lacking centralized recordkeeping infrastructure. We incorporated near-infrared (NIR) microparticles into microneedle patches (MNPs) to invisibly encode medical information in the skin for OPMR using a specialized reader. NIR particles were co-encapsulated with inactivated polio vaccine in the same microneedles without loss of antigenicity. However, measles and rubella vaccines combined with NIR particles lost almost all potenc

Rubella outbreak investigation in Adigrat town of Eastern Tigray, Northern Ethiopia, 2024: case-control study design.

BACKGROUND: Rubella virus infection is a clinically mild illness, but it can have serious effects on pregnant women, such as miscarriage, stillbirth, or congenital rubella syndrome. However, rubella is neither a notifiable disease nor part of an immunization program in Ethiopia. A suspected case of rubella has been reported in Adigrat since November 26, 2023. The study aimed to investigate and control the suspected rubella outbreak. METHODS: Following the descriptive study, a case-control study was conducted in Adigrat town from December 23, 2023, to March 30, 2024. Cases were people who pres

Strategies, interventions, and uptake of catch-up vaccination among adolescent and adult migrants, refugees, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs): A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Catch-up vaccination helps close immunity gaps among migrants, refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Despite immunisation life-course policies and global guidelines promoting catch-up vaccination of arriving migrants, vaccination strategies for adolescent and adult populations are poorly described. We synthesised evidence on catch-up vaccination strategies and interventions, delivery platforms, uptake and coverage, and contextual barriers and enablers in LMICs. METHODS: We searched Embase, Medline, PsycINFO, Global Health, Web

Long-distance transport of siRNAs with functional roles in pollen development.

Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) play a crucial role in plant reproduction, yet their mobility and function remain incompletely understood. We report that a large proportion of siRNAs found in pollen of Capsella rubella relies on mobile siRNAs from maternal sporophytic tissues, highlighting the importance of non-cell-autonomous siRNAs in male gametophyte development. Unlike tapetal siRNAs, which guide DNA methylation and require CLASSY3 and DNA-dependent RNA polymerase IV (Pol IV) activity in the tapetum, we found that Pol IV-dependent mobile siRNAs (PMsiRNAs) mainly function post-transcription

APOBEC3A is the predominant global editor of cytosines in human mRNAs and in single-strand RNA viruses.

APOBEC cytidine deaminases can convert cytosines to uracils in DNA as well as in RNA. The knowledge of DNA deamination motifs preferred by individual APOBECs revealed APOBEC3A as a major source of hypermutation in cancer. However, the extent and relative contribution of specific APOBECs into RNA editing remains unclear as their preferred RNA-editing motifs have not been defined. Here, using a parallel DNA and RNA sequencing strategy, coupled with motif-centered statistical analyses, we sought to identify mRNA edits and diagnostic editing motifs in yeast and human cells overexpressing individua

Measles-rubella surveillance and its facilitators and barriers in Bagmati province, Nepal: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Nepal committed to eliminate measles-rubella by 2023 by implementing the ‘Strategic plan for measles and rubella elimination in WHO South-East Region:2020–2024’. Following the impact of the pandemic on the national immunization program and services, Nepal has now revised its target to achieve elimination by 2026. High vaccine coverage and effective surveillance systems are indispensable to achieve measles elimination. This study aimed to assess the status of measles-rubella surveillance and understand the facilitators and barriers for the measles-rubella surveillance activities in

Maternal immunization and early-life immunity: Mechanisms shaping neonatal protection.

Neonatal infections remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, reflecting the distinctive immunological state of early life, which prioritizes tolerance and regulatory/T helper 2 (Th2)-skewed responses over robust effector immunity. Protection during this vulnerable period relies largely on maternal immunity conveyed across the placenta and through breast milk. Transplacental IgG transport is mediated primarily by the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) and may be influenced by placental Fc gamma (Fcγ) receptors, IgG subclass distribution and Fc features, including glycosylation. Caregiver and healthcare professional perspectives on drivers of routine immunisation uptake in East New Britain, Papua New Guinea: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Immunisation coverage varies across Papua New Guinea (PNG), with 40% of children in East New Britain Province (ENBP) classified as zero-dose (children missing diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine first dose (DTP1)) and 55% as under-immunised (missing DTP3) in 2023. This study aimed to understand routine childhood immunisation enablers and barriers in areas of ENBP reported to have highly variable DTP1, DTP3 and measles-rubella first-dose (MR1) coverage. METHODS: Qualitative in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted face-to-face with caregivers of children aged 9-23 mont
