Circinate balanitis in HLA B27 spondyloarthrithis: A report of two cases.

Circinate balanitis is a characteristic mucocutaneous lesion commonly associated with reactive arthritis (ReA), previously described as Reiter's disease. It typically presents alongside other ReA symptoms, including urethritis, conjunctivitis, and arthritis, but can occasionally occur as an isolated finding. We report two cases of circinate balanitis occurring in patients with HLA B27-positive spondyloarthritis, without the classical triad of reactive arthritis. A 32-year-old male presented with recurrent erosions on the glans penis for 2 years, with a history of HLA B27-positive spondyloarthr

YouTube as a source of information on reactive arthritis: a quality analysis.

OBJECTIVE: YouTube is often used by patients and healthcare professionals to obtain medical information. Reactive arthritis (ReA) is a type of inflammatory arthritis triggered by infection, usually in the genitourinary or gastrointestinal tract. However, the accuracy and quality of ReA-related information on YouTube are not fully known. This study aimed to assess the reliability and quality of YouTube videos pertaining to ReA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A YouTube search was performed on August 1, 2023, using the keywords "reactive arthritis," "Reiter's disease," and "Reiter's syndrome." The numbe

Reactive arthritis: the convoluted history of Reiter's disease.

Reactive arthritis, previously known as Reiter's Syndrome or Disease was a post-dysenteric, asymmetrical acute large joint polyarthritis, with fever, conjunctivitis, iritis, purulent urethral discharge, rash and penile soft tissue swelling. Although the eponym was given to Hans Reiter, various forms of the condition have been recorded in history a few hundred years before Reiter. Two French doctors, Noel Fiessinger (1881-1946) and Edgar Leroy (d. 1965), presented a paper at la Societe des Hopitaux-in Paris on the 8th December 1916 on dysentery in 80 soldiers on the Somme, and four of whom deve

The space of homogeneous probability measures on Γ\X¯maxS is compact: With an appendix by Jialun Li.

Gout, a common inflammatory arthritis, can be diagnosed with absolute certainty. Gout results from the body's reaction to urate crystals deposited in tissues, and this pathophysiology is well understood. If used appropriately, available therapies can be entirely effective in not only treating the symptoms of gout, but also in eliminating the excess urate from the body, thereby eradicating the disease. Because of these facts, management of patients with gout should be successful. However, management of gout is particularly challenging in the elderly, even though the principles of management are

Familial risks between Graves disease and Hashimoto thyroiditis and other autoimmune diseases in the population of Sweden.

Genetic and family studies have indicated that Graves disease and Hashimoto thyroiditis have a heritable component which appears to be shared to some extend also with some other autoimmune diseases (AIDs). In the present nation-wide study we describe familial risk for Graves disease and Hashimoto thyroiditis identified from the Swedish Hospital Discharge Register (years 1964 through 2012) and the Outpatient Register (2001 through 2012). Family relationships were obtained from the Multigeneration Register and cancers from the Cancer Registry. Familial standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were c

Familial association of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder with autoimmune diseases in the population of Sweden.

AIMS: In the era of genome-wide association studies, familial risks are used to estimate disease heritability and success in gene identification. We wanted to estimate associations of 42 autoimmune diseases with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) between individuals and family members. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: The availability of a Multigeneration Register in Sweden provides reliable access to family data that covers the last century. An open cohort design of the diseases in individual and family members was obtained through linkage to the Hospital Discharge Register. Standardiz

Fiessinger-Leroy's disease: A rare case report.

Fiessinger-Leroy's disease (Reiter's disease) is rare and not commonly reported in India. This paper reports a case of a 35-year-old male with Fiessinger-Leroy's disease, occurring after balanitis. The patient presented with symmetrical polyarthritis, pruritic scaly plaques, keratoderma blenorrhagicum, and hematuria with histopathology of skin suggestive of Fiessinger-Leroy's disease. The case is presented with a view to document the occurrence of the same in India.

Reiter's disease: Circinate balanitis as alone preceding presentation - Successfully treated with pimecrolimus 1% cream.

Circinate balanitis, although a common manifestation of reactive arthritis, is usually an associated finding present along with the triad of arthritis, conjunctivitis, and urethritis. It is rarely seen as the only preceding manifestation of reactive arthritis. We hereby report a case of circinate balanitis as alone preceding presentation of reactive arthritis that was successfully treated with topical pimecrolimus 1% cream.

A case-control study of incident rheumatological conditions following acute gastroenteritis during military deployment.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the risk of incident rheumatological diagnoses (RD) associated with self-reported diarrhoea and vomiting during a first-time deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan. Such an association would provide evidence that RD in this population may include individuals with reactive arthritis (ReA) from deployment-related infectious gastroenteritis. DESIGN: This case-control epidemiological study used univariate and multivariate logistic regression to compare the odds of self-reported diarrhoea/vomiting among deployed US military personnel with incident RD to t

A case of Reiter's disease exacerbated by lithium.

Reiter's disease is characterized by the triad of peripheral arthritis, urethritis, and conjunctivitis. A 38-year-old male, who was on treatment with lithium for mania, presented to us with all features of this triad. He was previously diagnosed and treated as seronegative arthritis. However, his symptoms persisted despite therapy. His skin lesions regressed only once lithium was stopped. Lithium is known to exacerbate or precipitate a multitude of dermatological conditions. However, there is no previous reported association of lithium exacerbating preexisting Reiter's disease. We report this

Granulocyte and monocyte adsorption apheresis as an effective treatment for Reiter disease.

Reiter disease (RD) is characterized by a triad of sterile arthritis, urethritis and conjunctivitis. The conditions occur concomitantly or sequentially, and are associated with mucocutaneous features such as circinate balanitis and stomatitis. Arthritis usually occurs in attacks followed by recovery, but it sometimes progresses to permanent damage of the affected joints. Because the symptoms of this disorder are attributable to activated neutrophils, we assessed the efficacy of granulocyte and monocyte adsorption apheresis (GCAP) in a 73-year-old man with RD who had skin rashes on his penis, s

[Spondyloarthritides--clinical features].

The spondyloarthritides are group of interrelated and overlapping arthritic conditions which primarily include ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis/Reiter's disease and arthritis associated with psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease. They are characterised by the absence of rheumatoid factor and by association with HLA-B27 antigen. The main clinical features are inflammatory back pain, spondylitis, sacroileitis, asymmetric arthritis of lower limbs, enthesitis, dactylitis, besides fatigue, uveitis, skin and mucous membrane lesions, cardiac and pulmonary involvement. Autoimmune disease and subsequent risk of developing alimentary tract cancers among 4.5 million US male veterans.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmunity is clearly linked with hematologic malignancies, but less is known about autoimmunity and alimentary tract cancer risk, despite the specific targeting of alimentary organs and tissues by several autoimmune diseases. The authors therefore conducted the first systematic evaluation of a broad range of specific autoimmune diseases and risk for subsequent alimentary tract cancer. METHODS: On the basis of 4,501,578 US male veterans, the authors identified 96,277 men who developed alimentary tract cancer during up to 26.2 years of follow-up. By using Poisson regression metho

The epidemiology of infectious gastroenteritis related reactive arthritis in U.S. military personnel: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Reactive arthritis (ReA) is a recognized sequela of infectious gastroenteritis (IGE). However, the population-based incidence of IGE-related ReA is poorly defined, and the risk of disease has not previously been characterized in a military population. The intent of this study was to provide estimates of the incidence and morbidity associated with IGE-related ReA in the U.S. military population. METHODS: Using active duty US military medical encounter data from the Defense Medical Surveillance System, we conducted a matched case-control study to assess the risk of ReA following IGE

DNA-hydrolysing activity of IgG antibodies from the sera of patients with diseases caused by different bacterial infections.

DNase autoantibodies (Abs) can be found in the blood of patients with several autoimmune diseases, while the blood of healthy donors or patients with diseases with insignificant disturbances of the immune status does not contain the DNase Abs. Here we have analysed for the first time the DNase activity in the patients with diseases caused by several bacterial infections. Several rigid criteria have been applied to show that the DNase activity is an intrinsic property of IgGs from the sera of patients with bacterial diseases but not from healthy donors. The relative activity of IgGs has been sh

[Peloid therapy in various temperature modes in rehabilitation of patients with seronegative spondylarthritis].

Fifty patients with ankylosing spondylarthritis (AS) and 21 patients with reactive arthritis, Reiter's disease received peloid therapy. AS patients with a prevalent spinal lesion received mud applications (38-40 degrees), those with a prevalent joint lesion - applications of colder mud (22-24 degrees C), those free of inflammation in the joints and periarticular tissues - mud of 38-40 degrees C temperature. In reactive arthritis and Reiter's disease mud applications with temperature 22-24 degrees are indicated.

[Endogenic intoxication and metabolism of the connective tissue in Reiter's disease].

The purpose of the research was to study the medium-weight molecules, level of lipoperoxydation products and parameters of the connecting tissue metabolism in plasma at different stages of infectious process at urogenital clamydiosis. It is determinated that at chronic chlamydiosis infections (Reiter's disease) more significant infringements of the connecting tissue metabolism are arised than in patients with an acute infection. Among the leading factors in the development of this pathological process could be the metabolic intoxication which level of expressiveness at Reiter's disease is prov

Macular degeneration in a case of Reiter's disease.

Posterior uveitis is not a documented feature of Reiter's disease. We describe here a patient of Reiter's disease, who after a bout of dysentery in January 2002 developed macular edema of the right eye with visual acuity of 6/36. In December 2002, she was found to have phlyctenular conjunctivitis. In June 2004, when she reported with scaly plaques over both palms, repeat ophthalmological examination revealed macular degeneration of the right eye. The simultaneous occurrence of Reiter's disease and macular degeneration in this patient may be fortuitous but the immunological basis of both diseas
