The usual method of measuring the conglutination phenomenon is to use a centrifugation and resuspension technique to assess the clumping of alexinated cells. This method is designed only to detect powerful clumping and immunoconglutinins measured in this way have always been found to react with fixed C′3a. A disadvantage of this method is that only antibodies to complement-antigens present in large amount on the alexinated cell will be detected. This may explain why immunoconglutinins (I-Ks) to other complement components have not been found. A method of measuring I-Ks by a sedimentation patte

Sera from patients with recent streptococcal infection or non-suppurative sequelae exhibit with variable frequency a precipitin reaction in agar gel with a partially purified streptococcal antigen which has been shown previously to be immunologically related to human heart tissue. This precipitin could be absorbed from sera with normal human heart tissue homogenates but not with homogenates of other organs. Demonstration of this cross-reaction by heart absorption was found dependent both upon the serologic properties of individual sera and the nature or state of purification of the streptococc

Rheumatoid factors in the sera of patients with rheumatoid arthritis appear to be specifically directed against genetically determined "antigens" in human gamma-globulin. At least eight rheumatoid factors of differing specificity exist; usually several are present in combination in the same serum. The different rheumatoid factors can be readily detected through their pattern of reactivity with anti-Rh antibodies from different individuals. Rheumatoid factors in diseases other than rheumatoid arthritis were found to have a more restricted specificity, contrasted to the broader reactivity of the

Reactions of normal and pathologic sera with heart tissue have been investigated by the immunofluorescent method, with particular reference to presumptive autoantibodies to heart and their differentiation from blood group isoantibodies and Wassermann antibody. In the heart, blood group substances A and B were found distributed in capillary walls, vascular endothelium, and interstitial connective tissue. In surveys of randomly selected sera, isoimmune reactions against tissue blood group substances A and B were noted infrequently. This finding was considered related to the limited sensitivity o

The systemic manifestations accompanying erythema nodosum can be differentiated from those associated with the precipitating infectious process and from coincident disease processes. Erythema nodosum itself is characterized by (a) skin lesions at pressure sites, (b) malaise, fever and occasionally chills, (c) arthritis (70 per cent) and (d) over-reactivity of tissue. Tissue hypersensitivity is most pronounced at sites of trauma, at sites of specific skin testing, and in the lymphoid system draining infections in the pharynx and lung. Common infections of the respiratory tract most often anteda
