Performance of different criteria sets for inflammatory back pain in patients with axial spondyloarthritis with and without radiographic sacroiliitis.

It is important to recognize inflammatory back pain (IBP) for an early diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Assessment of Spondyloarthritis International Society (ASAS) has recently published new criteria set for diagnosing IBP. In the present study, we evaluated the performance of the new ASAS IBP criteria and to compare the performance of IBP criteria sets in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) patients with and without radiographic sacroiliitis. The study sample included a total of 274 patients with a diagnosis of axSpA and 50 patients with a diagnosis of chronic (>3 months) mechanical bac

Similarities and differences between nonradiographic and radiographic axial spondyloarthritis: a clinical, epidemiological and therapeutic assessment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The concept of axial spondyloarthritis with two forms or subtypes (nonradiographic and radiographic) has been established over the last few years. However, debates concerning especially the nonradiographic form of the disease are still ongoing. Here we summarise recent data on similarities and differences (and their possible explanations) between nonradiographic axial spondyloarthritis and radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (ankylosing spondylitis). RECENT FINDINGS: Nonradiographic and radiographic forms are about equally frequent among patients first diagnosed with axial

Sacroiliac joint involvement in systemic sclerosis.

AIM: One of the major problems for systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients is suggested to be articular involvement. Mostly involved joints in SSc were reported as wrist, carpometacarpal-interphalangeal, foot, knee, hip and shoulder; however, there has been little knowledge on the sacroiliac joint. Our aim was to evaluate sacroiliac joint involvement in SSc. METHODS: Fifty-seven SSc patients, 54 rheumatoid arthritis patients and 64 healthy subjects were included. Anteroposterior pelvic radiographs were obtained and graded twice by three blinded rheumatologists. One competent radiologist has re-eval

Prevalence and risk factors of low bone mineral density in juvenile onset ankylosing spondylitis.

The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence and risk in patients with juvenile onset ankylosing spondylitis (JoAS) complicated with low bone mineral density (BMD). A total of 112 children and adolescents with JoAS were enrolled in the study. Bone mass was measured from the lumbar spine and the left proximal femur using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. According to the 2007 International Society of Clinical Densitometry definitions, a Z score of less than -2 was termed as "low BMD." Stepwise regression analysis was used to investigate associations between low BMD and disease-relate

The predictors of development of new syndesmophytes in female patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

OBJECTIVES: The formation of spinal syndesmophytes is an important outcome measure in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) but the predictors of new syndesmophyte development in female AS patients are unknown. This longitudinal study aimed to assess the rate and predictors of development of new syndesmophytes over a 2-year period in female AS patients. METHOD: Clinical and radiographic data were collected at baseline and after 2 years in 67 female AS patients. Spinal radiographs were scored using the Stoke AS Spinal Score (SASSS). Univariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify pred

[The new classification criteria for spondylarthritis: implications in clinical practice].

" Spondyloarthritis" consists of a group of several diseases sharing clinical, radiological and genetic similarities. Ankylosing spondylitis is the main representative of this group and is characterized by a predominant axial involvement. The presence of radiographic sacroiliitis is essential for the diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis according to the modified New York criteria. Because the occurence of radiographic sacroiliitis takes 8 to 11 years, the diagnosis of spondyloarthritis is often delayed. Magnetic resonance imaging can depict sacroiliac joint inflammation before the appearance of

Serum C-X-C motif chemokine 13 is elevated in early and established rheumatoid arthritis and correlates with rheumatoid factor levels.

INTRODUCTION: We hypothesized that serum levels of C-X-C motif chemokine 13 (CXCL13), a B-cell chemokine, would delineate a subset of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients characterized by increased humoral immunity. METHODS: Serum from patients with established RA (the Dartmouth RA Cohort) was analyzed for CXCL13, rheumatoid factor (RF) levels, anticitrullinated peptide/protein antibody (ACPA) and total immunoglobulin G (IgG); other parameters were obtained by chart review. A confirmatory analysis was performed using samples from the Sherbrooke Early Undifferentiated PolyArthritis (EUPA) Cohort
