Cutaneous Acanthamoebiasis: Two Cases Highlighting Diverse Histopathologic Findings.

Acanthamoeba is a free-living ameba, known to most commonly cause amebic keratitis in contact lens users and granulomatous amebic encephalitis in immunocompromised patients. Cutaneous Acanthamoebiasis as a single-organ manifestation is less common. We report two cases seen in our department. Case one is a 23-year-old hospitalized patient with systemic lupus erythematosus and pancytopenia who acutely developed nodules on the extremities. Biopsy showed lymphohistiocytic inflammation and focal coagulative necrosis in the subcutaneous fat. Acanthamoeba trophozoites and cysts were apparent in H&E-s

Successful Treatment of Cutaneous Acanthamoeba polyphaga With Marine Algae, Padina pavonica, Extract: Targeting TLR2/TLR4 Signal and Cytokeratin 18 in Immunocompromised Animals.

Cutaneous amoebiasis is a severe opportunistic infection, particularly prevalent among immunocompromised individuals, with high mortality due to the insidiousness of the disease, its ability to evade early diagnosis, and lack of specific symptoms. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of the marine alga, Padina pavonica, extract as a topical treatment for Acanthamoeba polyphaga skin infections. Immunocompromised mice with induced cutaneous lesions were topical infected with A. polyphaga and examined 3, 9, and 15 days post infection through histological and molecular analysis.

Successful Treatment of Primary Acanthamoeba Cutis in a Patient With Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia on Acalabrutinib.

Primary cutaneous amoebiasis is rare, and typically affects immunocompromised patients and presents with unique clinical and histopathologic changes. Untreated, the infection could progress to involve the central nervous system, which is almost universally fatal. We present a case of primary cutaneous acanthamoebiasis in a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia on acalabrutinib. Timely diagnosis and treatment resulted in complete resolution of lesions and a disease-free status at the 14-month follow-up. A 76-year-old man presented with a 2-month history of multiple, nonhealing, ulcerated, e

Continuous positive airway pressure-associated cutaneous amoebiasis in an immunosuppressed patient.

Organisms of the genus Acanthamoeba are environmentally ubiquitous and colonizers of the oral mucosa in humans. While largely asymptomatic in healthy persons, Acanthamoeba infection can cause disseminated disease with poor prognosis in immunosuppressed populations. Here we report a unique case of cutaneous amoebiasis associated with continuous positive airway pressure use in an immunosuppressed patient.

Cutaneous Manifestations of Selected Parasitic Infections in Western Pacific and Southeast Asian Regions.

Cutaneous manifestations of parasitic infections often result in discomfort, debilitation, and even stigmatization. Data on cutaneous manifestations of parasitic infections, however, are limited. This article provides updates on the cutaneous manifestations of parasitic infections which are known to occur in Western Pacific and Southeast Asian regions, such as scabies, pediculosis, cutaneous larva migrans, larva currens, cutaneous schistosomiasis, cutaneous enterobiasis, cutaneous cysticercosis, acute dermatolymphangioadenitis (lymphatic filariasis), and cutaneous amoebiasis. Analysis of factors associated with maintenance discontinuation in implant patients.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported that tobacco use among healthcare providers (HCPs) has a negative impact on their beliefs and attitudes toward tobacco prevention and control measures. However, little is known about these among Italian dental students. Therefore, this single-site study examined tobacco use behaviors and the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of dental students at a public university in Southern Italy regarding tobacco prevention and control. METHODS: A cross-sectional study through an online survey was conducted among 115 students aged 18 + years enrolled in dent

Sexually transmitted penile amoebiasis in Iran: a case series.

OBJECTIVES: Four cases of penile amoebiasis (PA) presenting as genital ulceration seen among men who practiced unprotected insertive anal intercourse in Tehran are described. METHODS: PA was confirmed by observation of motile trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica from lesions examined by wet mount microscopy. RESULTS: Ulcers were solitary, painful, irregular, discharging and increasing in size. Three heterosexuals and one bisexual had practised insertive anal intercourse in the 2 weeks before diagnosis. Bilateral inguinal lymphadenitis occurred in one case. Direct examination of lesions was

Amoebiasis cutis: clinical suspicion is the key to early diagnosis.

Amoebiasis cutis is a rare manifestation of Entamoeba histolytica, primarily an intestinal pathogen, which occurs as a complication of amoebic dysentery. Primary cutaneous amoebiasis occurs from contamination of pre-existing wounds. A high degree of clinical suspicion and demonstration of trophozoites from lesions are important for making an early diagnosis lest these patients should suffer significant morbidity. A HIV-negative and otherwise healthy 40-year-old man presented with a well-defined, indurated, painful, progressively enlarging plaque with overlying ulcers and pus discharging sinuse

Amoebiasis cutis in HIV positive patient.

Protozoan infections of the skin, particularly cutaneous amoebiasis, are rare in HIV-positive patients. We report a case of amoebiasis cutis in an HIV-positive truck driver with a history of frequent unprotected sexual exposures. He presented with multiple painful ulcers and sinuses with purulent discharge, necrotic slough and scarring in the perianal and gluteal region for the last 2 years. He was positive for HIV-1 and -2. Cutaneous biopsy revealed numerous Entamoeba histolytica in the trophozoite form, in addition to an inflammatory infiltrate and necrotic debris. He responded well to oral

[A Dutchman from Mali with a perianal ulcer caused by cutaneous amoebiasis].

A 66-year-old Dutchman, living in Mali, presented with an extensive progressive perianal ulcer despite local and antibiotic treatment. Microscopic examination of the stool revealed Entamoeba histolytica/dispar cysts and phagocytosing trophozoites were seen in fresh scrapings of the ulcer, a diagnostic feature of infection with E. histolytica. The diagnosis was cutaneous amoebiasis and the patient was effectively treated with metronidazole and local debridements. Primary cutaneous amoebiasis is a rare disease. Diagnosis and treatment are relatively simple but lack of familiarity with the diseas

Skin diseases in the tropics.

Australian physicians may encounter a number of tropical skin diseases. Migrants or visitors may travel here with a skin disease, or people living in the tropical or subtropical regions of Australia may develop skin conditions. The most important of these are cutaneous leishmaniasis, cutaneous amoebiasis, tinea imbricata, favus, sporotrichosis, chromomycosis, cutaneous tuberculosis, Buruli ulcer, cutaneous larva migrans and dracontiasis.

Current hypotheses on synergistic microbial gangrene.

We have reviewed spreading infections of the dermis, with special reference to the importance of synergy in their causation. Evidence for this is accumulating from both clinical studies and from studies in laboratory animals. Necrotizing fasciitis (rapid spread over 24 h) can be caused by beta-haemolytic streptococci, sometimes with Staphylococcus aureus, or by mixed infections of aerobes and anaerobes, often of gut origin. Animal studies provide good evidence that S. aureus can potentiate the beta-haemolytic streptococcal infection in necrotizing fasciitis. There is also evidence that mixture

Diagnosis of Meleney's synergistic gangrene.

A retrospective and comparative study of 127 case reports of Meleney's postoperative progressive synergistic gangrene and of 62 examples of postoperative amoebic skin gangrene, showed that these two entities were clinically indistinguishable and that therefore a purely clinical diagnosis of Meleney's gangrene could not be made. Furthermore, a critical appraisal of the bacteriological data indicated that a certain diagnosis of Meleney's gangrene cannot be provided by the clinical bacteriologist. Finally, the histological features were entirely non-specific thus precluding a definitive diagnosis

Pseudomalignant cutaneous amoebiasis.

Two cases of cutaneous amoebiasis which presented as malignant ulcers are reported. In non-healing ulcers in the perianal or gluteal region, the possibility of amoebiasis should be kept in mind, especially in the tropics. An immediate examination of the scraping from the ulcer is sufficient to confirm or rule out the diagnosis.

A case of cutaneous amoebiasis.

The present report concerns a patient with ulceration around an artificial anus. The condition had been treated for some time as pyoderma gangrenosum but finally proved to be cutaneous amoebiasis; the presence of Entamoeba histolytica was demonstrated. A cure was achieved with metronidazol (Flagy) and diloxanide furoate (Furamide) given orally.

Monoxenic and axenic cultivation of carrier and patient strains of Entamoeba histolytica.

All of five strains of Entamoeba histolytica, isolated from symptomatic cases of amoebiasis, could be adapted to axenic growth on the TP-S-1 medium of Diamond (1968). Four axenic strains were started from amoeba-Crithidia cultures; one could be axenized directly after isolation from a case of cutaneous amoebiasis. Attempts to monoxenize, resp. axenize strains, isolated from Dutch, asymptomatic carriers, were less successful. Only three out of ten strains could be submitted to bacteria-free growth. These three strains, however, originated probably from a recent case of intestinal amoebiasis. Th
