Serum uric acid levels were determined in patients with psoriatic arthritis on and off medication, with rheumatoid arthritis on no medication likely to alter serum values, and in patients with uncomplicated psoriasis. Values in males were higher than those in females. A larger prevalence of values above the normal range were seen in males with psoriatic arthritis on uncontrolled medication (13-5%) and in males with rheumatoid arthritis (12%) than in the other groups. 31 families with at least two psoriatic members, including sometimes three generations (4 families) have been studied looking for HL-A markers. The sera from 50 psoriatic patients, 130 patients with other skin diseases and from 24 healthy blood donors were tested for the presence of circulating immune complexes. The incidence of an IgG-antibody which induces lymphocyte cytotoxicity to Chang human liver cells in culture was estimated in the sera of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and in healthy controls. A prospective study was started in 1969 to describe morphological features of liver biopsies from patients with severe psoriasis. Among 123 patients evaluated for possible MTX therapy, liver biopsies disclosed pathological histology (maninly fatty change and/or non-specific reactive hepatitis) in 51 per cent. The albumin-like fraction of psoriatic scales was isolated either directly by slab gel electroporesis or after previous treatment with polyethylene glycol6000. After both isolation procedures the amino acid composition was determined. Both proteins were rich of glutamic acid, glycine, and alanine. Eight patients with psoriasis who had developed contact allergy to mechlorethamine hydrochloride (nitrogen mustard) were subjected to a regimen of intravenous infusion of small amounts of the drug in an attempt to produce desensitization. We have discussed some aspects of differential diagnosis of inflammatory processes of the facial skin. HLA antigens were determined in 14 Finnish families with psoriatic members. The pedigrees of all families are presented.
