We describe the case of a 25-year-old woman who presented with monoarthritis of the proximal interphalangeal articulation of the fourth left finger 4 days after receiving the second dose of the Oxford-AstraZenecaR SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. She had no abnormalities in her X-ray or blood exams, but she had a cousin diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. The patient had an excellent response to anti-inflammatory medication, the arthritis was transient and left no sequelae. Studies have shown some vaccines may be associated with acute arthritis, in particular the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine. Yo

We identified an unusual subtype of a Cryptosporidium sp. horse genotype as the cause of cryptosporidiosis in a 13-year-old girl in Poland who was undergoing immunosuppressive treatment for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease. The same subtype was identified in a horse the girl had ridden.

OBJECTIVES: The heme oxigenase 1 (HO-1), a rate-limiting enzyme for heme degradation, is an important cytoprotective protein. Transcriptional activity of HO-1 coding gene (HMOX1) can be regulated by the presence of a dinucleotide repeat polymorphism (GT)n at its promoter region. Accordingly, length of (GT)n repeat has been associated with susceptibility to several diseases. We investigated whether the HMOX1 (GT)n polymorphism was associated with childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) susceptibility.
METHODS: We studied 207 and 333 unrelated

OBJECTIVE: To investigate phenotypic and molecular characteristics of a consanguineous family with autosomal-recessive, polyarticular, juvenile isiopathic arthriris (JIA) with extra-articular manifestations, including renal amyloidosis and Crohn's disease, associated with a novel homozygous truncating variant in LACC1.
METHODS: Whole exome sequencing (WES) or targeted Sanger verification were performed in 15 participants. LACC1 expression and cytokine array were analysed in patient-derived and CRISPR/Cas9-generated LACC1-knockout macrophages (Mϕ).
RESULTS: A homozygous truncating variant (p.

BACKGROUND: Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) is a rare systemic inflammatory disease, which is characterized by daily fever and arthritis, with an evanescent rash and neutrophilic leukocytosis. To date, there has been no definite laboratory or imaging test available for diagnosing AOSD; the diagnosis is one of exclusion, which can be very challenging. In particular, AOSD patients may experience different complications affecting their clinical picture, management, and prognosis. The treatment of AOSD remains largely empirical and involves therapeutic agents.
CASE SUMMARY: We report the case

STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
INTRODUCTION: Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) typically presents with fever, rash, anterior uveitis, and/or joint pain. We present three cases with initial torticollis due to rotatory subluxation of C1-C2 as an initial sign of JRA.
CASE REPORTS: Three girls, ages 5-9, presented with C1-2 rotatory subluxation. Traction was able to reduce the atlanto-axial joint in all cases. Based on imaging, history, exam, and laboratory results, they were diagnosed with JRA. After reduction of the atlantoaxial joint, they were transitioned to a halo vest and disease-modifying

rogressive pseudorheumatoid dysplasia (PPRD) is a rare autosomal-recessive, noninflammatory arthropathy. Several cases have been reported worldwide; however, diagnosis remains challenging. Three unrelated children with PPRD were retrospectively studied. All three patients in this study were initially misdiagnosed. The misdiagnoses included juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, myodystrophy and idiopathic short stature. The time from the onset of symptoms to a definitive diagnosis was 3 to 8 years. Clinical signs and radiological phenotypes were analyzed carefully, and they were all consistent with th

BACKGROUND We present a case of Group B Streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae or GBS) meningitis in a non-pregnant woman that likely originated from acute otitis media. Although invasive Group B Streptococcal infections are increasing in the United States, GBS meningitis is still rare in non-pregnant adults. At the end, we discuss risk factors for this disease and data that suggest that invasive GBS infection is increasing in the adult and elderly populations of the United States. CASE REPORT Our patient was a 55-year-old woman with a history of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis who presented wi

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a benign but rare proliferative disorder of the synovium. It commonly occurs in the adult population and usually presents as a monoarticular disease. There are two types of PVNS, namely the localised and diffused type. The disease is often misdiagnosed due to its rarity especially in paediatric patients. Knee involvement in PVNS is the commonest form in children although other joints such as hip, foot, ankle, hip, sacroiliac joint and concurrent multiple joint involvements have also been reported. PVNS in paediatric patients is often misdiagnosed as s

Multicentric carpotarsal osteolysis syndrome (MCTO; MIM #166300) is a rare skeletal disorder characterized by osteolysis affecting particularly the carpal, metacarpal, and tarsal bones, although other bones might be involved. MCTO is an autosomal dominant disease caused by heterozygous variants in the MAFB gene, frequently misdiagnosed as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis due to similar clinical manifestations. This study reports the first Brazilian family diagnosed with MCTO with progressive osteolysis of the carpal and tarsal bones, presenting a c.161C>T (p.Ser54Leu) heterozygous variant in the

Hyperviscosity syndrome (HVS) is a life-threatening syndrome caused by high concentrations of large plasma proteins like IgM, rheumatoid factor, and other immune complexes, leading to increased blood viscosity and symptoms such as visual abnormalities, neurological impairment, bleeding diathesis, and thrombosis. While Waldenström's macroglobulinemia accounts for 80% to 90% of cases, HVS may develop in other clinical settings characterized by elevations in plasma proteins. Limited evidence currently exists describing the safety and efficacy of therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) for the managemen

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an essential water-soluble antioxidant, and deficiency (ie, plasma level <11 μmol/L) can result in scurvy. People at the highest risk for vitamin C deficiency (ie, scurvy) are those with inadequate intake, such as patients with alcohol abuse disorder, malnutrition, psychiatric disorders, restrictive eating habits, and food insecurity, as well as those with malabsorptive syndromes. We present a case of a 26-year-old woman with Crohn's colitis, myasthenia gravis, and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis who presented with frequent bruising, epistaxis, and excessive bleeding

IMPORTANCE: Australian- and New Zealand-based, uveitis-specialized ophthalmologists have produced recommendations for the management of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)-type chronic anterior uveitis.
BACKGROUND: Historically, the visual prognosis of JIA-type chronic anterior uveitis has been poor. New medical advances are likely to improve outcomes, but recently published guidelines are tailored for ophthalmic care in Europe and the United States.
DESIGN: This work involved a consensus survey and a panel meeting.
PARTICIPANTS: The Australian and New Zealand JIA-Uveitis Working Group (29

BACKGROUND: Data on the outcome of THA in patients under the age of 30 years is sparse. There is a perceived reluctance to offer surgery to young patients on the basis of potential early failure of the implant. The aim of this study was to review clinical and radiological outcomes of THA in patients under the age of 30 years in a high-volume specialist arthroplasty unit.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients between 1989 and 2009 was undertaken. 95 patients (118 THAs) were identified but 17 patients were excluded for lack of clinical records or for follow-up under 5 years. Clinical reco

PURPOSE: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate facial growth in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) by means of lateral head cephalometric radiographs and relate the findings to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) condylar changes on panoramic radiographs.
METHODS: Radiographic and medical records were evaluated in 65 children with JIA. Cephalometric and panoramic analyses were performed for the impact of condylar changes on facial growth. We compared children with condylar alterations, minor or major, with those without condylar alterations.
RESULTS: Based on panoramic

BACKGROUND: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) characterized by arthritis of unknown origin is the most common childhood chronic rheumatic disease, caused by both host genetic factors and environmental triggers. Recent evidence has mounted to focus on the intestinal microbiota, a potentially recognized set of environmental triggers affecting JIA development. Here we offer an overview of recently published animal and human studies that support the impact of intestinal microbiota in JIA.
DATA SOURCES: We searched PubMed for animal and human studies publications with the search terms "intestina
