Immunotherapy with interleukin (IL)-2 possesses great potential in the treatment of immune-mediated diseases and cancers. However, only a few reports on a small number of children have appeared in the literature. From March 1988 to March 1989, 11 children and adolescents were treated with IL-2. Behçet's syndrome represents a multisystemic disease with vasculitic changes. It manifests mainly with oral and genital ulceration, ocular involvement mostly uveitis and typical skin lesions. The present study was undertaken to determine directly whether immunoregulatory T cells have a defective suppressor function in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and whether anti-T-cell antibodies are essential for immunoregulatory T-cell defects. Ileocolonoscopy and microscopic examination of ileum biopsies were performed on 35 patients with reactive arthritis, with asymmetrical pauciarticular arthritis and enthesopathies. An important problem in investigating food allergic diseases is to adduce evidence that specific diseases of unknown cause may be attributable to food allergy. Serum amyloid-A protein (SAA) is the putative precursor of amyloid-A (AA) protein which forms the fibrils in reactive systemic or secondary amyloidosis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic disease which can have multiple cutaneous manifestations. In particular, rheumatoid vasculitis may be difficult to diagnose because of the wide array of clinical presentations. Early recognition can assist the physician in diagnosis and in determination of the proper therapy. Sections of synovium from 393 operations on diseased joints were re-examined without knowledge of the clinical findings. Specimens were scored for each of 37 histopathologic features. Independently, patients were assigned to one of 10 diagnostic groups after review of all available clinical data. Computer analysis revealed statistically significant differences in the incidence of one or more histologic parameters between the members of all except three of the possible disease pairs. The possibility of exploiting these differences to increase diagnostic precision was examined.
