BACKGROUND: The Rosenheim report, published in 1972, was aimed at decreasing the transmission of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the renal unit. A review in 1996, revealed the non-compliance of some centres with the guidance to vaccinate individuals against HBV.

A 59-year-old woman received eight cycles of R-CHOP for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma from July, 2004. Pretreatment HBV serological tests were positive, however, the transaminases were within normal limits, and she remained asymptomatic. Blood serum samples collected from patients with acute hepatitis symptoms admitted to Infectious Disease Hospitals of Novosibirsk, Barnaul, and Irkutsk were studied. A 39-year-old man presented with headache, weight loss, bilateral subdural hematomas, pansinusitis, and visual loss. The neuro-ophthalmologic examination disclosed deep choroidal lesions and bilateral optic disc edema. Orchiectomy for testicular torsion showed acute vasculitis consistent with polyarteritis nodosa (PAN). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing revealed hepatitis C. This is the first reported case of PAN due to hepatitis C with early findings of choroidal and optic nerve infarction.
