Effects of air pollution on disease activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the associations of air pollution with disease activity and flare rate in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: This prospective cohort study included patients with RA who were treated at a tertiary medical centre in South Korea between January 2021 and December 2024. Air pollution exposure was estimated using monthly mean concentrations of 6 air pollutants (sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, particulate matter [PM]10, and PM2.5). Disease activity and flares were recorded longitudinally at each outpatient visit. Assoc

AA in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus.

Inflammation and immune dysregulation are at the center of various diseases, including autoimmune diseases, especially rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus). In general, corticosteroids, disease-modifying drugs, and monoclonal antibodies against IL-6 and TNF-α, JAK inhibitors, and various other immunomodulators are extensively used in the treatment of RA and lupus. It is known that EFA (essential fatty acid) metabolism, especially that of AA, is altered in RA and lupus. It is proposed that metabolism of AA and of other PUFAs may play a role in predicting disease pr

Quantification of Chikungunya Virus RNA by Real-Time RT-PCR Assay.

RT-qPCR is characterized by‌ high sensitivity, strong specificity, excellent reproducibility, and operational simplicity, ‌enabling‌ rapid quantification of viral RNA within a short timeframe. The real-time PCR system relies upon the measurement of a fluorescent reporter during PCR, in which the amount of emitted fluorescence is directly proportional to the amount of the PCR product in a reaction. Here, we describe the use of TaqMan® probe-based one-tube Real-time reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) for the detection and quantification of the Chikungunya viru

Technology Assistance Mitigates the Volume-Dependent Risk of Hip Dislocation Following Total Hip Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Lower surgeon case-volume has been associated with a greater risk of postoperative complications such as dislocation following total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, robotic assistance and computer navigation may mitigate the volume-dependent risk of instability. This study sought to compare dislocation rates between lower-volume surgeons performing technology-assisted (TA) THAs and higher-volume surgeons utilizing conventional instrumentation (CI). METHODS: The Premier Healthcare Database was queried to identify adult patients who underwent primary elective THA from 2016 to 2023.

Pectoralis minor reattachment in Latarjet procedure: improvement of scapular stability in high-performance contact athletes- retrospective cohort comparison.

BACKGROUND: The Latarjet procedure is effective for recurrent anterior shoulder instability with glenoid bone loss; however, as a nonanatomic technique, it may lead to scapular dyskinesis, particularly in contact athletes. The necessity of reattaching the pectoralis minor remains a subject of debate. We hypothesized that pectoralis minor reattachment during the Latarjet procedure would be associated with a lower incidence of scapular dyskinesis and improved functional outcomes in high-performance contact athletes. METHODS: A retrospective, assessor-blinded, case-control study was conducted on

The internal joint stabilizer in lateral ulnar collateral ligament injuries: a biomechanical study.

HYPOTHESIS: The internal joint stabilizer (IJS) effectively reduces varus angle deviations and mitigates maximum lateral ulnar collateral ligament (LUCL) strain during elbow flexion-extension, thereby improving elbow posterolateral rotatory stability. METHODS: Eight cadaveric specimens underwent biomechanical testing in 4 conditions: intact LUCL (INTACT), intact LUCL with IJS (INTACT IJS), disrupted LUCL (DISRUPT), and disrupted LUCL with IJS. Varus angle and LUCL strain were measured with a LabJack T7 LabJack T7 data acquisition system (DAQ) and 2-camera (PROSILICA GC1350C) stereophotogramme

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation changed the relative abundance of intestinal microbiota in rats with knee osteoarthritis: a potential treatment for KOA.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common degenerative bone disease, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is an alternative and complementary therapy (ACM). This study revealed the role of TENS in regulating the intestinal microbiota in KOA rats. METHODS: This study concentrated on the intestinal microbiota of KOA rats which were treated with TENS for 1, 2, and 3 weeks. Three intensities of TENS were used to treat KOA rats, and the expressions of IL6/8, PI3K-AKT were measured. The intestinal microbiota was analyzed by 16 S rDNA sequencing. RESULTS: Compared with the

Hip range of motion is differentially associated with pain sensitivity in individuals with and without knee osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a multifactorial condition influenced by both mechanical and neurophysiological factors. Hip joint mobility may be associated to knee joint loading and pain processing; however, the relationships between hip range of motion (ROM), pain sensitivity, and muscle torque in individuals with KOA remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between knee pain sensitivity and hip rotator ROM in individuals with and without KOA. Additionally, it examined the association between hip rotation ROM and muscle torque and compared hip ROM between gro

Infrared spectroscopy with statistical analysis and machine learning for cancer risk assessment in inflammatory bowel disease patients.

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) undergo regular colonoscopic surveillance due to their elevated risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC). However, current clinical, endoscopic and histopathological risk stratification methods can be limited in sensitivity and objectivity, highlighting the need for complementary molecular approaches. In this study, Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) was used to acquire mid-infrared (MIR) spectra from IBD-associated endoscopic biopsy samples (30 patients analysed; 10 who developed dysplastic pre-cance
