Deposition arthropathies are a heterogeneous group of diseases in which organic and inorganic substances accumulate in different regions of the body with significant complications and morbidity. Although they are clearly distinct entities, the clinical manifestations are similar, so that joint evaluation by imaging provides a more accurate diagnostic approach by identifying findings characteristic of certain pathologies and is considered the gold standard in certain conditions. However, neuropathic arthropathy, especially Charcot's foot, is an essential differential diagnosis in the joint eval

INTRODUCTION: Neglected bilateral clubfoot clubhand deformity is a mesomelic type of dysplasia that is characterized by disproportionate shortness of the middle segment of all limbs and is a form of short-limb dwarfism. Affected individuals are clinically of normal stature with particularly short mesomelic segments with nearly symmetric limb abnormalities.
CASE REPORT: The patient was a 20-year-old male Indian who came to outpatient department for cosmetic purpose. Upper limb abnormalities include short forearm, and elbow joints which are broad and deformed with limited flexion-extension rang

We reported the case of a 65-year-old woman who presented with neuropathic arthropathy of the elbow and had undergone cervical spinal cord tumour resection at 32 years of age. Open synovectomy with free-body resection was performed; however, the instability of the elbow joint rapidly progressed. Therefore, we performed total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) using a linked-type prosthesis. However, the humeral stem became severely loosened 1 year after arthroplasty. Furthermore, a periprosthetic humeral fracture developed due to a minor trauma. A revision TEA using a long-stem prosthesis was performed

Charcot Foot (CF), part of a broader condition known as Charcot Neuro-Osteoarthropathy (CNO), is characterized by neuropathic arthropathy with a progressive alteration of the foot. CNO is one of the most devastating complications in patients with diabetes mellitus and peripheral neuropathy but can also be caused by neurological or infectious diseases. The pathogenesis is multifactorial; many studies have demonstrated the central role of inflammation and the Receptor Activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL)-Receptor Activator of NF-κB (RANK)-Osteoprotegerin (OPG) pathway in the acute phase of the dise

Occupational acro-osteolysis pertains to bone resorption of the distal phalanges of the hands and feet among workers with vinyl chloride exposure. We report the case of a Filipino man with osteolysis of the distal phalanges of the hands initially considered to have systemic sclerosis. The patient had gradual shortening of the fingers, thickening of the skin over the extremities, and hypopigmented patches over a span of more than 20 years. His lower extremities presented with non-pitting edema, skin thickening, and neuropathy, without shortening of the digits. Difficulty of ambulation was appar

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to mimic the changes from Charcot neuropathic arthropathy in humans by examining the effects of exposing diet-induced obese (DIO) mice to neurotrauma through a regimented running protocol.
METHODS: Forty-eight male wild-type C57BL/6J mice were obtained at age 6 weeks and separated into 2 groups for diet assignment. After a 1-week acclimation period, half of the mice consumed a high-fat diet (60% fat by kcal) ad libitum to facilitate neuropathic diet-induced obesity whereas the other half were control mice and consumed an age-matched standard low-fat control diet (

Patients with leprosy are known to tend to develop neuropathic arthropathy, known as Charcot joint. There are no case reports of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with leprosy with polyarticular neuropathic arthropathy, and the results are unknown. In this study, we report a case of TKA in a patient with leprosy with polyarticular neuropathic arthropathy and discuss its outcomes and indications. Right TKA using the NexGen Legacy Constrained Condylar Knee implant was performed in a 62-year-old man with neuropathic arthropathy in multiple joints with clinical symptoms, particularly in th

BACKGROUND Charcot spine (CS), also called neuropathic arthropathy, appears to be triggered by damage to the nervous system (either central or peripheral) impairing proprioception and pain/temperature sensation in the vertebral column. Therefore, the defense mechanisms of altered joints lead to a progressive degeneration of the vertebral joint and surrounding ligaments, which can provoke major spinal instability. Beyond the sensory aspects, mechanic factors are identified as risk factors. While its etiology and pathophysiology remain contested, CS represents a rare and difficult pathology to d

Neuropathic arthropathy is the painless destruction of weight-bearing bones and joints that is caused by a neurosensory deficit. Minimally displaced neuropathic fractures may be managed non-operatively. However, larger displacements often require surgical fixation. Nonunion is a rare entity in calcaneal fractures, and its occurrence in a neuropathic setting is an even rarer scenario. An unusual clinical scenario means there is a paucity of literature to guide the optimum treatment. Here we describe a patient with neuropathic arthropathy due to meningomyelocele in childhood, presenting with neu

Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies (HSANs) include hereditary disorders that cause congenital insensitivity to pain. Moreover, patients diagnosed with such disorders are known to have genetic mutations that alter their deep pain sensation, making them more prone to developing bone and joint complications such as repetitive fractures, joint swelling, and Charcot arthropathy. Neuropathic arthropathy (Charcot joint) is a rare and relatively poorly understood condition; it is suggested to be caused by autonomic dysfunction and repetitive microtrauma and characterized by instability and

One of the most challenging problems facing orthopedic surgeons is persistent pain after surgery and certainly is just as frustrating following hindfoot fusion. The hindfoot joints consist of the subtalar, talonavicular, and calcaneocuboid (CC) joints. These joints are commonly fused for degenerative changes, deformity correction, inflammatory or neuropathic arthropathy, tarsal coalition, or primarily after trauma. Goals of hindfoot fusion are a painless plantigrade foot capable of fitting in shoes without orthotics or a brace. Many believe that deformity correction is achievable without inclu

BACKGROUND: Previous reports on the treatment of neuropathic arthropathy of the wrist were generally conservative, with few case reports of treatment with osteoarticular surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old right-handed male complained of unpainful swelling of the dorsal aspect of his right wrist for 3 years. He was at that time diagnosed with synovitis and radiocarpal arthritis. The patient underwent a partial Four-Corner Arthrodesis and Synoviectomy to preserve motor function. Over the next 2 months, his right wrist also developed painful redness, with progressive swelling and stiffnes

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic arthropathy (NA) of the shoulder is a chronic progressive process characterized by joint destruction in the presence of a neurosensory deficit. Syringomyelia, a spinal cord disease, is the leading cause of NA in the upper extremity.
OBJECTIVE: We present a systematic review of NA with syringomyelia cases alongside a case report of an adult with NA of the shoulder that occurs a few 4 years after a revelation and surgical management of a Chiari malformation with syringomyelia.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. A PubMed, Scopus, Isik

Neuropathic arthropathy (NA) is a long-term progressive disorder that causes joint destruction in the existence of a neurologic deficit. Minor injuries and fractures are commonly overlooked until the visible joint deterioration becomes persistent. Syringomyelia is one of the important causes of NA. The appearance of clinical signs in syringomyelia is caused by longitudinal cysts formed in the cervical and cervicothoracic regions of the spinal cord. Depending on the existence of the underlying disorder, the number and localization of the syrinxes, a range of symptoms, involving pain, sensation

TRK inhibition can lead to on-target neurologic adverse events. Two cases illustrate the development of neuropathic arthropathy as a side effect of entrectinib. After starting entrectinib, both patients developed foot pain, swelling, and sensory changes with magnetic resonance imaging revealing marrow edema. Providers should have a low threshold to investigate foot pain or gait abnormalities thoroughly with magnetic resonance imaging and referral to specialists to aid in the diagnosis of neuropathic arthropathy, with consideration to transition to an alternative agent.

Syringomyelia is uncommonly revealed by a neuropathic arthropathy (Charcot joint) and characterised by its slow progression with late neurological symptoms. In this particular field, neuropathic arthropathies mainly affect the shoulders and the elbows. We report a new case of neuropathic arthropathy of the wrist caused by syringomyelia, because of the rarity of this condition as well as its uncommon location.Neuropathic arthropathy caused by syringomyelia is poorly published in the literature. This atypical entity should be considered in case of Charcot arthropathy associated with neurological

Charcot neuropathic arthropathy is a relatively rare, chronic disease that leads to joint destruction and reduced quality of life of patients. Early diagnosis of Charcot arthropathy is essential for a good outcome. However, the diagnosis is often based on the clinical course and longitudinal follow-up of patients is required. Charcot arthropathy is suspected in patients with suggestive symptoms and an underlying etiology. Failed spinal surgery is not a known cause of Charcot arthropathy. Herein we report a patient with ankle Charcot neuropathic arthropathy that developed after failed spinal su

INTRODUCTION: Larsen syndrome (LS) is a rare genetic disorder affecting mainly the connective tissues. It is characterized by characteristic facial anomalies, cervical kyphosis, cardiorespiratory disorders, and multiple joint dislocations. We present a case of a 15-year-old male with unstable neuropathic knee joint instability in a known case of LS. The paucity of literature on the management of this rare condition puts an orthopedician in dilemma regarding the optimal treatment.
