Aortic stiffness and cardiac function in middle-aged women with ischemic stroke with and without migraine.

INTRODUCTION: Migraine increases the risk of ischemic stroke and cardiovascular disease in women, potentially due to systemic vascular dysfunction. We investigated whether migraine is associated with increased aortic stiffness and impaired cardiac function as markers of macrovascular dysfunction in middle-aged women with ischemic stroke. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included three groups of women aged 40-60 years with: (I) ischemic stroke, (II) ischemic stroke with migraine, and (III) no history of stroke or migraine. Aortic stiffness was measured by assessing aortic arch pulse wave ve

Evaluation and prediction of knee kinematics and kinetics in children with Blount disease.

BACKGROUND: Blount disease primarily causes disturbance in the medial growth plate of the proximal tibia. This study aimed to 1) determine the kinematic and kinetic changes, 2) find the correlation between knee varus measured by gait analysis and radiographs, and 3) identify the predictors of increased internal knee valgus moment and impulse. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study with the primary outcome being internal knee valgus moment impulse. Bivariate correlation analysis was performed to identify correlations, and linear mixed-effects regression models were established to determ

The role of a multidisciplinary approach in the early and differential diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease-related spondyloarthritis: insights from a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Inflammatory bowel disease-related spondyloarthritis (IBD-SpA) commonly complicates IBD. Early diagnosis is essential; however, it is often delayed due to clinical heterogeneity and the lack of specific diagnostic criteria. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of close collaboration between gastroenterologists and rheumatologists in the classification of the musculoskeletal (MSK) manifestations in IBD patients, focusing on the early diagnosis of IBD-SpA and its differentiation from other conditions. METHODS: Consecutive IBD outpatients underwent a comprehensive rheumatologic

Collaborative neurocardiology board meetings for decision-making in stroke care: a real-world experience.

BACKGROUND: Interdisciplinary collaboration between neurologists and cardiologists is needed to provide state-of-the art stroke care and individualized decisions about secondary prevention strategies. This highlights the need to establish working structures for joint decision-making between cardiologists and stroke neurologists. At present, studies describing the real-world decision-making as part of such brain-heart teams are scarce. METHODS: We established a structured heart–brain team approach with monthly virtual neurocardiology board (NCB) meetings within a neurovascular network. We condu

Complications, Reoperations, and Healthcare Costs Following Total Ankle Arthroplasty vs Ankle Arthrodesis.

BACKGROUND: Ankle arthrodesis (AA) has historically been the gold standard surgical treatment for end-stage ankle arthritis, providing reliable pain relief at the expense of motion. Total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) has emerged as a motion-preserving alternative with improving survivorship and functional outcomes. However, large-scale comparative data evaluating complications, reoperation rates, opioid utilization, and health care costs remain limited. This study compared outcomes following AA and TAA using a national administrative database. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed u

Impact of Narrow-Band Imaging on Sessile Serrated Lesion Miss Rate: A Multicenter Randomized Tandem Colonoscopy Trial.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Sessile serrated lesions (SSLs) are precursors to post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer but are frequently missed because of their subtle morphology. Previous studies have reported the effectiveness of narrow-band imaging (NBI) for detecting colorectal adenomas, but its value for detecting SSLs remains unclear. This study aimed to determine whether NBI reduces the SSL miss rate (SSLMR). METHODS: This multicenter, randomized tandem trial was conducted in a colorectal cancer screening population across 15 endoscopy centers. The participants were randomly assigned to NBI-first or

Does adding concomitant immunosuppressive therapy to belimumab provide additional benefits in SLE? Results from the BEL-Spain Registry.

OBJECTIVES: Belimumab (BEL) is an approved biologic therapy for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) that, when added to standard care, reduces disease activity, flare rates and glucocorticoid exposure. In clinical practice, BEL is frequently combined with conventional immunosuppressants (IS), but the added benefit of concomitant IS once disease control is achieved remains uncertain. Observational data suggest that BEL monotherapy may be effective in selected patients, but comparative real-world evidence is limited. Objectives were to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of BEL as monotherapy vs
