BACKGROUND: Hand disorders are common in menopausal women. Equol is a soy metabolite produced in humans and its production level differs among individuals. The purpose of this research is to investigate the correlative relationship between variables indicating equol production levels and the occurrence of hand disorders in menopausal and postmenopausal women.
METHODS: Female subjects were divided into two groups: women 45-70 years of age with hand osteoarthritis (patient group) and women in the same age range without hand osteoarthritis (control group). The equol production level of each subj

The symptoms of osteoarthritis vary widely from patient to patient, depending especially on the localization on the disease. There is a poor correlation between radiological involvement and pain. In general, symptom onset is gradual and symptoms increase slowly but progressively. The most commonly affected joints are the knees, hips, hands, and spine. The main signs and symptoms are pain, stiffness, joint deformity, and crepitus. Pain is mechanical and its causes are multifactorial; in the initial phases, pain usually manifests in self-limiting episodes but may subsequently be almost constant.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) of the hand can be a debilitating condition that hinders an individual's quality of life. With multiple joints within the hand that are commonly affected OA, an individual's ability to use their hand in everyday movements become more limited. The article aims to review literature on the aetiology and pathogenesis of OA, risk factors, characteristics of hand OA and the steps of diagnosis.
KEY FINDINGS: The aetiology and pathogenesis of OA, in particular hand OA, is not fully understood. However, it is known that several factors play a role. Environmental factors,

OBJECTIVE: To determine the distribution of clinically palpable hand interphalangeal (IP) nodes at each finger and thumb joint in a population with nodes, the influence of left or right hand dominance and sex on the development of nodes, and the association between nodes and underlying radiographic features of osteoarthritis (OA).
METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of participants in the Genetics of Osteoarthritis and Lifestyle (GOAL) study who had ≥1 Heberden's nodes or Bouchard's nodes on clinical examination. Frequencies (%) of nodes were described for each IP joint in the ha

To assess the levels of receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL) in serum and synovial fluid (SF) of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) and to correlate its levels with disease activity and severity. Serum and SF levels of RANKL were measured in 24 patients with RA (Group I) and 20 patients with OA (Group II); patients were selected according to the ACR criteria, and serum RANKL was measured in 13 healthy controls. All patients were subjected to full rheumatological assessment. In RA group, serum level of RANKL was significantly higher than control group (P = 0.0

Erosive osteoarthritis, a less common subtype of osteoarthritis, is often described as a more severe form. This combination of cartilage degeneration with pathologic features suggestive of inflammatory synovial changes generally manifests in women around the time of menopause and hormonal levels as well as genetics are thought to play a role in its onset. The hands are most often involved with the sudden onset of palpable pain and swelling of the distal interphalangeal joints and proximal interphalangeal joints most frequently, but other joints have been reported. Phalangeal deformities appear

Digital osteoarthritis relates to primarily the distal interphalangeal (DIP) and first carpometacarpal (CMC-I) joints. Heberden's nodes often accompany osteoarthritis of the DIP joints. Osteoarthritis of the PIP joints can be more painful and more inflammatory. It can be at the origin of Bouchard's nodes. The DIP and the PIP joints can be the seat of erosive lesions. Osteoarthritis of the MCP joints is rare. Osteoarthritis of the CMC-I joint is sometimes at the origin of a deformity of the thumb impairing its function and an atrophy of the thenar muscles. Treatment includes non-pharmacological

BACKGROUND: The definition of generalized osteoarthritis in the literature is just as controversial as the discussion about correlations between GOA and Heberden's nodes (HN). Therefore, both questions were investigated in patients with proven heredity in a genealogical study of 931 family members.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 106 patients with HN and 109 control subjects, 70 joints and spinal segments were investigated with respect to characteristic functional parameters. In addition, 44 joints and spinal segments were investigated radiologically.
RESULTS: GOA affects both the small and large j

Elderly often have Heberden nodes (HN) and Bouchard nodes (BN) that may affect finger dexterity. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess an effect of HN and BN on finger dexterity of the elderly. The nine-hole peg test was used for dexterity measurement in 200 elderly with HN and/or BN. Mean age was 68.6 +/- 5.39 years. Average performance of each hand was compared between elderly with or without nodes. HN and BN were found in 75 right hands (37.5%) and 73 left hands (36.5%). Nodes were found in females more often than males (p < 0.001). Average right hand dexterity in elderly with

Prayer is one kind of worship that is composed of repetitive action during praying in Islam. The prayer is performed five times a day, every Friday, bairams and death ceremonies. The aim of this study is to search the role of this repetitive action on knee, hip osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Forty-six patients who had been performing the prayer at least for 10 years, and 40 patients who had not performed the prayer, were included in this prospective study. Each patient was evaluated with standard questionnaire form, joint examination was done and various laboratory parameters were studied. A

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether clinically determined Heberden's nodes (HN) and Bouchard's nodes (BN) are associated with underlying individual radiographic changes of osteoarthritis (OA).
METHODS: 232 index patients with symptomatic large joint and/or hand OA, and 257 of their first degree relatives were included. HN were graded 0-2; BN were scored as present/absent. Joint space narrowing (JSN) and osteophyte (OST) were each scored 0-3 using the OARSI atlas. A weighted kappa test was used to examine intraobserver reproducibility. Odds ratio (OR) was estimated for the relationship between nod

Osteoarthritis is the commonest form of arthritis, at least amongst Caucasians and is frequently polyarticular. Genetic factors are now considered pivotal in the aetiopathogenesis of polyarticular osteoarthritis (POA). This document proposes a nexus between the gene most commonly mutated amongst Caucasian peoples, notably the HFE gene and an appreciable subset of POA patients who have a clinically recognisable OA phenotype. It is hypothesised that there are at least 2 major POA phenotypes each of which is associated with discrete genotypes. Type 1 POA characterized by Heberden's or Bouchard's

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 800 mg/die of chondroitin sulfate (CHS) per os plus naproxen versus naproxen over 2 years in patients with erosive osteoarthritis (EOA) of the hands. Joint count for erosions, Heberden and Bouchard nodes, Dreiser's algofunctional index and physicians' and patients' global assessment of disease activity were studied. A total of 24 consecutive patients (22 women and 2 men, mean age 53.0 +/- 6) suffering from symptomatic OA with radiographic characteristics of EOA were evaluated. The patients were divided into two groups of 12 patients each. The

Erosive osteoarthritis (EOA) is a progressive disorder affecting the interphalangeal joints of the hands. Severe synovitis is superimposed on the typical changes seen in conventional interphalangeal osteoarthritis (OA), which includes formation of Heberden's and Bouchard's nodes. Imaging studies show a combination of bony proliferation (osteophytosis), periosteal reaction, and articular erosions, which assume "gull-wing" configuration. Differential diagnosis includes classic "degenerative" OA, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis.
