Dermatomyositis does not adversely affect functional outcomes after total hip arthroplasty: a 1:2 matched case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with dermatomyositis (DM) are predisposed to osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), frequently requiring total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, limited evidence exists regarding postoperative outcomes in this population. This study aimed to evaluate functional outcomes and complication rates after THA in patients with DM compared to a matched cohort of patients without DM. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted using our institution's arthroplasty registry. We identified 18 patients (21 operations) with DM who underwent primary THA and matched them i

Knee medial tightness after total knee arthroplasty is associated with superior clinical outcomes in Chinese patients: a retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: In total knee arthroplasty (TKA), the relationship between joint gap and postoperative prognosis remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the postoperative medial-lateral joint gap difference on clinical outcomes following TKA in Chinese patients with preoperative varus deformity. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study of 252 knees, patients undergoing primary posterior-stabilized (PS) TKA were grouped by postoperative medial-lateral gap difference. Clinical scores were assessed using KSS, WOMAC and FJS-12 at 1.70 ± 0.42 years of follow-up. Multiple comparis

Is Neighborhood Socioeconomic Deprivation Associated With Outcomes Following Primary THA and TKA? A Systematic Review Utilizing the Area Deprivation Index.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic disadvantage is increasingly recognized as an important factor associated with outcomes after total joint arthroplasty (TJA). The Area Deprivation Index (ADI) has emerged as a validated measure of socioeconomic disadvantage that specifically captures individual neighborhood levels of structural and material deprivation based on income, education, employment, and housing characteristics. Prior research has demonstrated ADI to be associated with surgical outcomes; however, its relationship to postoperative outcomes after THA and TKA, procedures in which outcomes depend

Posterior Tibial Slope Is Highly Variable and Asymmetric in Asian Osteoarthritic Knees: A Three-Dimensional CT Analysis.

Purpose: Posterior tibial slope (PTS) is an important anatomical parameter that influences knee kinematics and clinical outcomes following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Recent advances in CT-based robotic-assisted TKA (RA-TKA) have enabled accurate three-dimensional (3D) evaluation of knee morphology. However, limited data are available regarding PTS and its associated coronal and sagittal alignment factors in Asian patients with knee osteoarthritis. The purpose of this study was to quantify medial and lateral PTS and to identify alignment factors associated with PTS, thereby clarifying the r

Mid-Term Outcomes of a Next-Generation Modular Acetabular System in Primary and Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty.

Background/Objectives: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common orthopedic procedure, and with projected growth in both primary and revision surgical volumes, robust implant performance data is necessary to inform surgical decision-making. To ensure successful outcomes in primary THA (pTHA) and revision THA (rTHA), surgeons need versatile implant systems that can address patient-specific surgical challenges. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of a next-generation acetabular system used for various indications in both pTHA and rTHA. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 319 patients who u

Are Social Determinants of Health Disparities Associated With Worse Completion Rates for Patient-reported Outcome Measures After Total Joint Arthroplasty?

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are important markers to assess patient improvement after total joint arthroplasty (TJA). PROMs are increasingly relevant because of new PROM-reporting requirements for elective inpatient TJA from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Social determinants of health (SDOH) disparities have been associated with various worse outcomes after TJA, but to our knowledge, it is not yet known how PROM completion may be affected by SDOH disparities. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Among patients undergoing TJA, (1) are there SDOH disparities (such as ins

Precision in Medial pivot total knee arthroplasty: A retrospective study on mechanical axis alignment and functional outcomes with CT-guided patient-specific instrumentation.

BACKGROUND: Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) is the standard treatment for end-stage osteoarthritis, with optimal outcomes dependent on precise mechanical alignment and accurate implant positioning. Patient-specific instrumentation (PSI), facilitated by preoperative CT imaging, has emerged as a technique to enhance surgical precision; however, the relationship between alignment and functional outcomes remains less clear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of medial pivot CT-guided PSI TKA in achieving mechanical axis alignment and its correlation with functional outcomes over a 12-month pe

Robot-Assisted TKA for Varus Knees: Post Hoc Exploratory Analysis of Alignment Strategy and Deformity Severity.

Background: Robot-assisted total knee arthroplasty (raTKA) improves the precision of component positioning and coronal alignment restoration, but it remains uncertain whether that technical accuracy modifies the clinical effect of alignment strategy in different varus phenotypes. The present report evaluates alignment strategy and correction magnitude, explicitly as a post hoc exploratory deformity-subgroup analysis within a randomized raTKA cohort. Methods: This single-center, open-label, randomized study enrolled 296 patients with varus knee osteoarthritis who underwent raTKA between 2023 an

A five-year radiostereometry study of cup fixation and implant survival in 484 Moovis trapeziometacarpal arthroplasties.

INTRODUCTION: The primary cause of revision of trapeziometacarpal arthroplasty limiting the implant survival has been aseptic cup loosening. Radiostereometry is a precise method to evaluate implant migration as a surrogate marker for aseptic implant loosening and later revision. The aim of this prospective single-centre cross-sectional cohort study was to evaluate fixation of trapeziometacarpal cups using radiostereometry, report clinical and patient reported outcomes at 5 year follow-up, and assess the complications and survival rate of the Moovis cup with up to 9 years of follow-up. Manual versus robotic-assisted revision total knee arthroplasty for instability : a one-year cohort analysis.

AIMS: Revision total knee arthroplasty (rTKA) is a treatment option for failed primary TKA but is associated with higher complication rates and technical challenges. Robotic-assisted rTKA (rarTKA) is an emerging technique that may improve component alignment and surgical precision. However, its effect on early postoperative outcomes in rTKA for instability remains unclear. METHODS: A total of 133 consecutive rTKAs for instability (82 manual and 51 robotic) performed by two fellowship-trained arthroplasty surgeons at a single institution were retrospectively analyzed. All rarTKAs used the MAKO
