Sixty-nine Kuwaiti patients with osteoarthritis (OA) were studied. Primary knee OA was seen in 65 (94.2%) patients. The mean age of this group was 53.18 years with a range of 39-97 years. The female to male ratio was 2.82:1. OA was bilateral in 84.62% and predominantly involved the medial tibiofemoral joint. According to Kellgren's grading of knee OA, grade 1 changes were present in 40.0%, grade 2 in 32.5%, grade 3 in 22.5% and grade 4 in 5.0%. During the 10-year period 1981-1990, 1,199 patients in the county of South Jutland, Denmark, had 1,477 primary total hip arthroplasties (THA) performed because of primary arthrosis (OA). We reviewed, at an average age of 46 years, a series of 61 patients treated for unilateral slipped upper femoral epiphysis. At maturity there had been slipping of the contralateral hip in 11 patients (18%) and another 14 (23%) had originally had evidence of bilateral slipping when the primary radiographs were reviewed. To define radiographic criteria, the radiographs of all patients diagnosed with coxarthrosis during the year 1951 were reviewed. Structural or joint space changes, evident radiographically in one of every seven cases in 1951, persisted at the time of the review in 1962. In the remaining cases, the diagnosis had been based upon the presence of osteophytic changes alone. Only one of 86 such cases reviewed in 1962 had structural or joint space changes. A sample of 8,000 persons representative of the Finnish population aged 30 or over was invited for examination, and 90 percent participated. Aluminia-on-aluminia hip prosthesis with titanium alloy stem was used in 255 cases, for 143 patients with cemented acetabular cup and 112 with an uncemented screw cup. The frequency of bilateral physiolysis colli femoris was evaluated in 62 patients. At first admission, 5 patients had a bilateral slipping. We have reviewed 505 cases of surviving total hip replacement for primary osteoarthritis and studied the functional result and pain relief obtained between four and fourteen years after implantation.
