Functional outcomes after total hip arthroplasty in young patients: comparison of patients younger than 35 years versus patients aged 35-40 years.

BACKGROUND: Young patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) have high functional demands and expectations. This study compared postoperative functional outcomes between 2 age groups. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study, the participants were divided into 2 groups: Group A consists of 35 patients aged under 35 years, while Group B contains 33 patients aged between 35 and 40 years. Dysplasia coxarthrosis was identified as the primary cause, with a prevalence of 55.9%. The primary outcome of this study was the functional outcome after THA, measured by the Hip disability and Osteoarthri

Total Hip Arthroplasty with Subtrochanteric Femoral Shortening Osteotomy for Crowe Type IV Post-Dysplastic Hip Osteoarthritis: Clinical and Radiological Outcomes.

Background: Surgical management of adult patients with post-dysplastic coxarthrosis using total hip arthroplasty is technically demanding and carries an increased risk of complications. In cases of high iliac dislocation classified as Crowe type IV, restoring the acetabular component to the anatomical hip centre often requires femoral shortening osteotomy to enable safe reduction in the prosthetic joint. Nevertheless, long-term evidence on functional outcomes and prosthesis survival with this approach is limited. Methods: A retrospective cohort study included 19 patients with 22 cases of Crowe

Patient-reported outcomes of transposition osteotomy of the acetabulum and contralateral total hip arthroplasty in patients with bilateral hip dysplasia.

PURPOSE: To clarify differences in hip-specific function, satisfaction, and patient preference between transposition osteotomy of the acetabulum (TOA) and contralateral total hip arthroplasty (THA) in the same patients with bilateral hip dysplasia. METHODS: Among 689 patients who underwent TOA between 1998 and 2019, 32 patients who also underwent contralateral THA were included. Median age at surgery was 46 years for TOA and 50 years for THA (p = 0.008), and median follow-up was 14 and 12 years, respectively (p = 0.049). Postoperative patient-reported outcome measures included pain and satisf

Hip resurfacing arthroplasty at a minimum of 14 years: revision is concentrated among female patients with dysplasia and small components.

INTRODUCTION: Hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) is a bone-preserving option for young, active patients. The influence of the underlying diagnosis on long-term outcome remains unclear, particularly the distinction between primary osteoarthritis (OA), developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and non-OA conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 104 consecutive metal-on-metal HRAs in 101 patients (three bilateral) performed by one surgeon between 2006 and 2011, stratified into Primary OA (n = 50), DDH (n = 29) and Non-OA (n = 25: avascular necrosis [AVN] n = 15, inflammatory

Development of osteoarthritis in adults with untreated hip dysplasia: a longitudinal observational study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although hip dysplasia is a risk factor for osteoarthritis (OA), its natural progression in adults remains poorly understood. In a longitudinal observational study, we aimed to estimate differences in OA incidence, time to OA, and minimum joint space width (JSW) between dysplastic hips and contralateral non-dysplastic hips. METHODS: Adults aged 20-70 years who underwent pelvic radiographs in Malmö, Sweden, during 2007-2008 were included. Inclusion criteria were unilateral hip dysplasia (lateral center edge angle ≤ 20°), no OA at baseline, and available follow-up imagin

Response surface optimization and flavor determination of fermentation processes of orange peel tea wine.

BACKGROUND: In this study, Xinyang Maojian tea and orange peel were used as raw materials to brew health wine with orange and tea flavors. METHODS: Based on a single factor, the response surface method was used to optimize the fermentation of orange peel tea wine. Material volume ratio, yeast addition, fermentation temperature, fermentation time, and sucrose addition were used as the single-factor variables. The fermentation conditions of orange peel tea wine obtained by this method provide a theoretical basis for the development and utilization of tea wine and orange peel, which can promote

Does Periacetabular Osteotomy Affect the Load Distribution on the Knee?

BACKGROUND: Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) treats developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) by reducing load on the hip and improving joint function. Untreated DDH affects lower extremity alignment and alters knee morphology, with valgus alignment more pronounced in hip osteoarthritis secondary to DDH. While PAO may influence knee mechanics, its association with subchondral bone density in the tibiofemoral joint remains unclear. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) To what degree is PAO associated with changes in the distribution of subchondral bone density in the knees of patients with DDH? (2) Is PAO ass

A deep learning algorithm for radiographic measurements of the hip versus human CT measurements: An intermodality agreement study.

BACKGROUND: Hip dysplasia (HD) is a prevalent cause of non-traumatic hip pain, which may result in osteoarthritis. Radiological measurements of HD exhibit variability based on reader and imaging modality, why it is important to know the agreement between different measurement methods. PURPOSE: To estimate agreement between measurements of lateral center edge angle (LCEA) and acetabular inclination angle (AIA) made, respectively, on Computed Tomography (CT) scans by humans and radiographs analyzed by an algorithm. To estimate impact of pelvic rotation on agreement between CT and radiographic m

Long-term course of borderline dysplasia: a 26-year follow-up of nonoperative hips in patients undergoing unilateral acetabular rotational osteotomy.

AIMS: We conducted a minimum 20-year follow-up of nonoperated hips that presented with borderline dysplasia (BD), defined as a lateral centre-edge angle (LCEA) of 18° to 25°, in cases of bilateral developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) where unilateral rotational acetabular osteotomy (RAO) was performed. The study aimed to identify risk factors for the development of hip osteoarthritis (OA), the timing of OA onset, and hip survival rate in BD. For the timing of OA onset and hip survival rate, we compared cases of BD with cases having LCEA < 18° (definite DDH). METHODS: The cases were divide

Pilot study on the use of an off-the-shelf 3D-printed titanium acetabular rim extension implant for treating canine hip dysplasia.

Hip dysplasia (HD) is one of the most prevalent orthopedic issues in dogs. Generic shelf implants are 3D-printed devices designed to address HD in dogs of varying sizes and hip laxity scores. This pilot study evaluated the feasibility and effectiveness of generic shelf implants in six dogs diagnosed with bilateral HD. Each dog underwent bilateral hip surgery in a single session followed by a 12-month monitoring period. Post-operative CT scans revealed increased femoral head coverage in all 12 hips, resulting in reversed hip laxity. However, implants exhibited positional deviations from optimal

Femoral Trochlear Dysplasia Is Common in Lower Limbs With Hartofilakidis C2 Hip Dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: Patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) can also present with deformities of the patellofemoral joint, such as femoral trochlear dysplasia. Although previous studies have reported that trochlear dysplasia is clinically important in some patients with DDH, the association between DDH and trochlear dysplasia is still unclear. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Is trochlear dysplasia more common among lower limbs with bilateral DDH, with unilateral DDH, or without DDH (specifically, in the contralateral limb of patients with unilateral DDH)? (2) Is having more severe DDH (as meas

Impact of Supine, Standing, and Sitting Postures on Acetabular Component Orientation in Total Hip Arthroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a highly effective surgical procedure aimed at relieving pain and restoring function in patients with severe hip joint disorders, such as osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis, and developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). The primary goals of THA are to alleviate pain, improve joint function, and enhance the quality of life by providing a stable and well-functioning hip joint. Accurate orientation of the acetabular component is critical for the success of THA, ensuring optimal joint mechanics, reducing the risk of complications such as dislocation and wea

Novel subtype of coxitis knee associated with acetabular dysplasia of the hip: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Multiple joint arthritis patterns require a comprehensive understanding to optimize patient management. This study aimed to present a patient cohort that deviated from known definitions of coxitis knee (CK), identifying and characterizing this atypical group. METHODS: Patients undergoing both total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty between January 2008 and December 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were classified into a typical coxitis knee group (classic, long leg arthropathy, and windswept deformity) and an atypical coxitis knee group. Leg-length discr

The Impact of Pelvic Osteotomies on Birth Canal Anatomy and Cesarean Section Rates: A Systematic Review.

Background: Various pelvic osteotomies can be performed to improve femoral head coverage for patients with hip dysplasia and other childhood hip disorders with the goal of delaying or preventing osteoarthritis. During preoperative discussions, female patients and their parents often ask about the influence of these osteotomies on future pregnancy. The literature on this topic is varied with no consensus on the appropriateness of elective cesarean section (C-section) for such patients. Therefore, this study sought to review and summarize the literature regarding the impact of different pelvic o

Morphology of the dysplastic hip and the relationship with sex and acetabular version.

The dysplastic hip is characterized by incomplete coverage of the femoral head, resulting in increased risk of early osteoarthritis. The morphological variation of the hip joint is diverse and clear differences exist between females and males. The aim of this observational study was therefore to investigate the relationship between the morphology of the hip, sex, and hip dysplasia using a three-dimensional model. Statistical shape models of the combined femur and pelvic bones were created from bilateral hips of 75 patients. Using manual angle measurements and regression analysis, the character

Is Prior Nonoperative or Operative Treatment of Dysplasia of the Hip Associated With Poorer Results of Periacetabular Osteotomy?

BACKGROUND: Understanding the implications of either nonoperative or operative treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) performed before periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is critical to counseling patients and their families. There are limited studies, however, on PAO for the treatment of residual DDH after surgical intervention during childhood, and even less information about PAO after prior nonoperative treatment. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We analyzed patients who had undergone PAO for DDH and asked: Did patients with prior childhood treatment (either operative or nonoperative) (1) imp

How Is Variability in Femoral and Acetabular Version Associated With Presentation Among Young Adults With Hip Pain?

BACKGROUND: Acetabular and femoral version contribute to hip pain in patients with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) or dysplasia. However, definitions and measurement methods of femoral version have varied in different studies, resulting in different "normal" values being used by clinicians for what should be the same anatomic measurement. This could result in discrepant or even inappropriate treatment recommendations. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: In patients undergoing hip preservation surgery, (1) what is the range of acetabular and femoral version at presentation, and how much do two commonly use
