BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is currently the best surgical option for hip osteoarthritis secondary to developmental hip dysplasia (DDH); it may be extremely challenging, because of the hypoplasic proximal metaphysis, pathological anteversion, and excessive cervico-diaphyseal angle of the neck at the femoral side. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the long-term survival and clinical and radiological results of Conus uncemented stems, implanted in patients affected by hip osteoarthritis with Crowe not-type IV secondary to DDH.

CASE: This is a case of 27-year-old woman with bilateral hip dysplasia who had been treated with a pelvic support osteotomy (PSO) on 1 side and a contralateral total hip replacement (THR). Good clinical outcomes for both hips were achieved after 21 and 7 years after PSO and THR, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, these 2 different methods have not been previously reported in 1 patient.
CONCLUSION: Total hip arthroplasty in presence of contralateral PSO may be offered as a viable treatment option for advanced osteoarthritis to restore hip range of motion and achieve satisfactory clini

Camurati-Engelmann disease (CED) is an extremely rare, sclerosing bone disorder of intramedullary ossification with only 300 reported cases worldwide. The pathogenesis is related to activating mutations in transforming growth factor beta 1, which results in bilateral, symmetric hyperostosis affecting primarily the diaphysis of long bones. Despite effective pharmacological treatment options, the diagnosis of CED is problematic owning to its rarity and variability of clinical presentation. We present a patient with known CED with advanced early hip osteoarthritis, secondary to underlying hip dys

PURPOSE: Late-diagnosed dislocated hips underwent open reduction, Dega osteotomy, and proximal femoral osteotomy between 1968 and 1988. The objectives of this study are to assess the survival of hips into adulthood, clinical and radiological outcome, patients' life perspectives and the risk factors of failure.
METHODS: An assessment of 67 hips treated when younger than five years (<age 5yr. group) and 71 hips in the group aged older than five years (+age 5yr.) was performed. All cases were evaluated clinically and radiographically, and survival was assessed, considering hip replacement as end

BACKGROUND: The results of treatment for neglected developmental dysplasia of the hips (DDH) in children remains controversial. We sought to determine the clinical and radiographic result of patients with neglected DDH with special emphasis on the functional outcome as determined by the Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) and determine which preoperative variables were related to the result. We also sought to determine if the functional results remain the same over time and if there is there a preoperative variable that can predict a poor outcome.
METHODS: This was a retrosp

INTRODUCTION: Musculocutaneous nerve lesion in a throwing athlete is a rare condition. We report the case of a professional baseball pitcher with an isolated musculocutaneous nerve lesion that occurred during a pitching motion.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient had radiating pain in the upper arm and weakness of elbow flexion. Physical examination revealed flaccid paralysis of the biceps brachii muscle and paresthesia in the right lateral forearm. Musculocutaneous nerve injury was suspected. Because some signs of recovery were observed within a few days, the patient received non-operative manage

INTRODUCTION: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) in the setting of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) presents more inherent complexities than routine primary THA for osteoarthritis. These include acetabular bone deficiency, limb length discrepancy (LLD), and abnormal femoral anteversion. Three-dimensional planning and robot-assisted (RA) bone preparation may simplify these complex procedures and make them more reproducible. The purpose of this study was to evaluate radiographic and clinical outcomes in a cohort of patients who had DDH and underwent an RA THA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retros

We report the long-term results of Bernese periacetabular osteotomy using a dual approach in hip dysplasia. Fifty-three hips (49 patients, mean age 39.9 years: 13-62 years; bilateral hips: four patients) that underwent periacetabular osteotomy using a dual approach (combined Smith-Peterson and Kocher-Langenbeck techniques) between May 1997 and December 2005 were analyzed in this study. The clinical and radiologic outcomes and complications were analyzed and the final survival rates of the operated hips were investigated with survival analysis curves. Forty-nine hips survived until the final fo

<p>Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the female population worldwide. The present review examines the biology of breast cancer, with a focus on the interplay between tumor‑infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and microRNAs (miRNAs or miRs). TILs, which reflect the immune system activity in combating tumors, are associated with more favorable prognoses and positive response to therapies. Elevated levels of TILs characterize lymphocyte‑predominant breast cancers (LPBCs), which are associated with higher therapeutic response rates in triple‑negative breast cancer, a type of LPBC. Defining the

Cell therapy and tissue engineering have been intensively researched for repair of articular cartilage. In this study, we investigated the chondrogenic potential of canine adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (ASCs) combined to high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HA) in vitro, and their therapeutic effect in dogs with chronic osteoarthritis (OA) associated with bilateral hip dysplasia. Canine ASCs were characterized after conventional 2D culture or 3D culture in HA, showing adequate immunophenotype, proliferation and trilineage differentiation, as well as chondrogenesis after cultivati

BACKGROUND: The Bernese periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is one of the most-used surgical techniques to treat symptomatic acetabular dysplasia. Although good functional and radiographic short-term and long-term outcomes have been reported, several complications after PAO have been described. One complication that may compromise clinical results is nonunion of an osteotomy. However, the exact prevalence and risk factors associated with nonunion are poorly elucidated.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What proportion of patients have complete bony healing versus nonunion during the first year after PAO? (2

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread use of single-stage open reduction and pelvic osteotomy for treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) after walking age, this aggressive strategy remains controversial. We directly compared dislocated hips treated with closed reduction (CR) to those treated with open reduction and Salter innominate osteotomy (OR/IO) to estimate the relative hazard of total hip arthroplasty (THA) and the THA-free survival time.
METHODS: In a series of patients 18 to 60 months of age, 45 patients (58 hips) underwent CR and 58 patients (78 hips) were treated with OR/IO
