The use of short stem designs in total hip arthroplasty is not a new concept, but its popularity has increased as a bone-sparing alternative to traditional stems. This study analyzed the midterm clinical and radiological results of the Taperloc Complete Microplasty stem (Zimmer Biomet® Warsaw, IN, USA). A total of 32 patients (20 men and 12 women) were retrospectively documented and received 40 stems (eight bilateral). The median patient age was 50 years (interquartile range 43-58) at the time of surgery. The median follow-up was 36.5 months (interquartile range 26.75-50.25). Indication for to

BACKGROUND: Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia (SED) is rare genetic condition which leads to skeletal and joint deformities that can predispose patients to degenerative joint disease. There are limited reports on the results of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in this patient population. The purpose of this study is to review clinical and radiographic outcomes of THA performed in patients with SED at one institution.
METHODS: Among 43,917 patients undergoing primary THA from 1970 to 2015, we identified 50 THAs performed in 29 patients with SED; 21 patients underwent bilateral THA (none simultaneous).

BACKGROUND: Despite the large increase in total hip arthroplasties and total knee arthroplasties, the incidence and prevalence of additional contralateral or ipsilateral joint arthroplasty are poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to determine the rate of additional joint arthroplasty after a primary total hip arthroplasty or total knee arthroplasty.
METHODS: This historical cohort study identified population-based cohorts of patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty (n = 1,933) or total knee arthroplasty (n = 2,139) between 1969 and 2008. Patients underwent passive fol

BACKGROUND: Complete circumferential osseous extension in the acetabular rim has been reported to occur in the deep hip with pincer impingement. However, this phenomenon occasionally is observed in dysplastic hips without pincer impingement, and the degree to which this finding might or might not be associated with hip pain, and how often it occurs bilaterally among patients, are not well characterized.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) To determine the proportion of patients with complete circumferential osseous extension in the acetabular rim using three-dimensional (3-D) CT in patients with and with

OBJECTIVE: To provide the first prevalence estimates of different radiographic hip morphologies relevant to dysplasia and femoroacetabular impingement in a well-characterized USA population-based cohort.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data were from the baseline examination (1991-1997) of a large population-based prospective longitudinal cohort study (The Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project). HipMorf software (Oxford, UK) was used to assess hip morphology on anteroposterior (AP) pelvis radiographs. Weighted, sex-stratified prevalence estimates and 95% confidence intervals for four key hip morpho

AIM: Hip dysplasia is one of the most common skeletal disorders. As a late consequence 20-25% of the patients are at risk to develop secondary osteoarthritis and may require total hip replacement early in life. The treatment principles of hip dislocation are (1) concentric reposition, (2) retention, i.e., plaster in human post or Pavlik harness and (3) maturation in abduction flexion orthesis. The Tübingen splint was introduced as a further development of abduction devices for the treatment of (residual) hip dysplasia with stable hips. The advantages are easy handling, adjustment according to

BACKGROUND: We argue that 1-stage bilaterally total hip arthroplasty (THA) could be acceptable in bilateral coxarthrosis because of high-riding developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH).
METHODS: Sixty-nine cases (51 patients) of high-riding DDH in patients who underwent THA from 2010 to 2013 were reviewed. Patients were divided into 2 groups: unilateral (group 1) and 1-stage bilateral surgery (group 2). The clinical measurements were the visual analog scale and Harris Hip Score.
RESULTS: The average follow-up was 37.3 months for group 1 and 38.8 months for group 2. The hospital stay time was

BACKGROUND: It is not known whether morphological abnormalities of the hip are compatible with lifelong hip function and avoidance of osteoarthritis (OA). Our purpose was to investigate the prevalence of radiographic findings consistent with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and dysplasia (DDH) in senior athletes with well-functioning hips.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What is the prevalence of FAI and DDH in senior athletes with well-functioning hips? (2) Are radiographic findings of FAI and DDH associated with OA? (3) Is a history of longer duration or more intense activity associated with hip

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: The reported incidence of hip dysplasia (HD) in cats varies dramatically between studies, but the condition is likely more common than we realise. There is little doubt that cats with HD and associated osteoarthritis (OA) suffer pain, and this warrants appropriate therapy.
DIAGNOSTIC CHALLENGES: Clinical signs of HD in cats are often gradual in onset, making them difficult to appreciate, but may include inactivity, pelvic limb lameness, difficulty jumping and climbing stairs, and reluctance to squat to defecate. Often lameness is bilateral, and can be particularly difficu

BACKGROUND: Subjective pain assessment scales have been widely used for assessing lameness in response to pain, but the accuracy of these scales has been questioned. To assess scale accuracy, 10 lame, presa Canario dogs with osteoarthritis (OA) associated with bilateral hip dysplasia were first treated with mesenchymal stem cells. Then, potential lameness improvement was analyzed using two pain scales (Bioarth and visual analog scale). These data were compared with similar data collected using a force platform with the same animals during a period of 6 months after treatment.
RESULTS: The F t

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) for poliomyelitis is a problematic procedure due to difficulty in positioning the cup of the prosthesis in the true acetabulum and the risk of dislocation after THA due to the low muscle tone.
METHODS: We herein present a case of bilateral hip pain with a history of poliomyelitis. Radiograph showed bilateral hip osteoarthritis caused by hip dysplasia due to residual poliomyelitis in right hip joint or developing dysplasia of the hip joint in left hip joint. THA was performed to bilateral hip joints.
RESULTS: Six years after bilateral THA, bilateral hi

BACKGROUND: Although little is known, a limited number of three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) images of the pelvis present focal concavity of posterior superior acetabulum. The purpose of the present study was to investigate this morphologic deformity and its relation with dysplasia and retroversion in adults who were expected to have the original morphology of the acetabulum after growth.
METHODS: Consecutive adult patients with hip pain who visited our hospital and had three-dimensional pelvic CT images were retrospectively analyzed after approval of the institutional review board; e

Osteoarthritis secondary to developmental dysplasia of the hip is a surgical challenge because of the modified anatomy of the acetabulum which is deficient in its shape with poor bone quality, torsional deformities of the femur and the altered morphology of femoral head. Particularly in Crowe type III and IV, additional surgical challenges are present, such as limb-length discrepancy and adductor muscle contractures. This is a bilateral hip dysplasia case where bilateral hip replacement was indicated, on the left side with a resurfacing one and on the other side a two stage procedure using a i

BACKGROUND: Knee and hip OA is the clinical and pathological outcome of a functional and structural failure of the joint, resulting in pain and physical dysfunction. Despite the similarity in clinical presentation the pathogenesis seems to differ. Where knee OA is associated with obesity and trauma, hip OA is associated with FAI covering three fundamentally different hip deformities, including acetabular dysplasia; all hypothesized to initiates OA development. Where PAO is used worldwide as a joint-preserving procedure in acetabular dysplasia, TKA and THA are the treatment of choice of end sta
