The HELICA-Endoprosthesis is a newly developed cementless hip prosthesis for dogs. It was implanted in 39 dogs that had severe hip osteoarthritis and a history of hip pain, as well as in one dog that had chronic hip luxation. One dog had a bilateral arthroplasty. The body weight of the patients ranged between 22 and 54 kg and their ages between nine months and 10 years. Both the femoral stem and acetabular component of the prosthesis were screwed into position following bony preparation. Additional fixation was not necessary as the components remain fixed in position until osteointegration is

We evaluated 31 patients with bilateral dysplastic hips who had undergone periacetabular osteotomy for early (Tönnis grade 0 or 1) or moderate (Tönnis grade 2) osteoarthritis in one hip and total hip replacement for advanced (Tönnis grade 3) osteoarthritis in the other. At a mean follow-up of 5.5 years (2 to 9) after periacetabular osteotomy and 6.7 years (3 to 10) after total hip replacement, there was no difference in the functional outcome in hips undergoing osteotomy for early or moderate osteoarthritis and those with a total hip replacement, as determined by the Merle d'Aubigné and Postel

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate a possible relation between congenital hip dysplasia and acetabular retroversion and to explore the eventual influence of the latter in the surgical decision for periacetabular osteotomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assessed the classical morphological characteristics of both hips, with an additional newly described retroversion index. The study was conducted in 174 patients with uni- or bilateral congenital hip dysplasia having undergone unilateral (153 patients) or bilateral (21 patients) periacetabular osteotomy when respectively one

BACKGROUND: A consecutive series of seventy-six patients (101 hips) underwent primary open reduction, capsulorrhaphy, and innominate osteotomy for late-presenting developmental dislocation of the hip. They were between 1.5 and five years old at the time of surgery, which was done between 1958 and 1965. The present study was designed to review the outcome of these patients into middle age.
METHODS: We located and reviewed the cases of sixty patients (eighty hips), which represents a 79% rate of follow-up at forty to forty-eight years postoperatively. Nineteen patients (twenty-four hips) had un

BACKGROUND: Most Japanese patients have secondary osteoarthritis, mainly due to developmental dislocation of the hip (DDH) or acetabular dysplasia (AD). However, the precise pathomechanism of AD remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency of bilateral AD and determine the correlation of the severity of AD between the right and left hips.
METHODS: A total of 206 patients with prearthritis or early-stage osteoarthritis caused by AD were examined radiographically, and their history of treatment for DDH during infancy was reviewed. There were 187 women and 19 men i

We studied the medium-term outcome of the Bernese periacetabular osteotomy in 52 patients (58 hips) with symptomatic developmental dysplasia of the hip and a mean age of 37.6 years (13 to 48). The operations were performed between 1993 and 2005 by the senior author with a mean follow-up of 66.7 months (13 to 153). There were 42 women (47 hips) and ten men (11 hips). Of these patients, 24 (30 hips) had an osteotomy on the right side and 22 (28 hips) on the left. Six patients had bilateral operations. The clinical outcome was assessed using the modified Merle d'Aubigne scale, and pre- and post-o

We describe a Japanese family with an autosomal dominant multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED EDM2) showing significant phenotypic diversity among the five affected members. Genomic analysis for COL9A2 identified an Ex3-1A>G heterozygous mutation, which has been proved to result in skipping of exon 3. The proband was a 9-year-old boy, who presented with ulnar club hands due to severe epiphyseal dysplasia in the distal ulnae. Radiological examination showed multiple epiphyseal dysplasias, predominantly involving the knee and the wrist. The hip appeared almost normal. The malalignment of the wrist

Coxa valga (with or withour excessive femoral anteversion) combined with acetabular dysplasia is a well-known cause of early osteoarthritis. Many authors have stated that the best result of an osteotomy can be achieved at an early stage of these osteoarthritic changes. In this study, we present 26 patients with a symmetrical hip deformity for which we performed a therapeutic osteotomy on the symptomatic hip. The contralateral hip had the same anatomical predisposition to develop an OA, but there were only minor to no complaints. We advised and performed an early osteotomy on these hips. On rad

INTRODUCTION: Hip dysplasia (HD) is assumed to be an etiological factor in the development of premature hip osteoarthrosis (OA). We established the prevalences of HD and OA in adults according to qualified radiographic discriminators, and investigated the relationship between HD and OA.
METHODS: Wiberg's CE angle (CE), Sharp's angle, the femoral head extrusion index, the acetabular depth ratio (ADR), the radiographic OA discriminators of Croft, and of Kellgren and Lawrence, and also minimum joint space width (JSW) < or = 2 mm were applied to the standing, standardized pelvic radiographs of 14

AIM: Dysplastic coxarthritis usually occurs earlier than primary coxarthritis. As a rule dysplastic coxarthritis mostly affects young and active individuals. Bilateral coxarthritis may lead to severe impairment requiring surgical replacement of both hip joints, as the patients are frequently dissatisfied with the substitution of one joint alone.
METHOD: In a retrospective study, 15 patients with bilateral hip dysplasia who had received total endoprostheses in both hip joints in a one-stage procedure (group A) were compared to 15 patients with bilateral dysplasia who had been operated on bilat

OBJECTIVE: Lack of osteophytes (atrophic form) has been shown to be a factor in the severity of hip osteoarthritis (OA). The aim of this study was to determine the epidemiological, radiological and biological differences between the hypertrophic and atrophic forms of hip osteoarthritis.
METHODS: 25 patients with symptomatic hip OA (ACR criteria) and classified as having an atrophic form of OA based on the lack of osteophytes on standard radiograph of the pelvis, were matched for joint space width with 25 subjects with evidence of the hypertrophic form of hip OA. OA radiological severity was a
