BACKGROUND: total hip replacement has long ago become the «golden standard» for the treatment of dysplastic coxarthrosis in thousands of the patients receiving it every year. In the meantime, the analysis of the specialized literature gives evidence of the lack of a systematic and personified approach to the rehabilitation treatment.
AIM: The objective of the present study was to improve medical rehabilitation of the patients following the total hip replacement and to develop the personalized programs for walking modality reconstruction taking into consideration the age and the body weight of

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY Aseptic loosening of endoprosthetic components is the most frequent reason for total hip arthroplasty revision. This paper aimed to verify the influence of the type of hip-component fixation of total hip replacement in correlation with the age of patients on aseptic loosening of components during mid-term survival. MATERIAL AND METHODS The retrospective, monocentric study statistically evaluated the data of 67 cases of implanted total hip replacements in 66 patients with the loosening of at least one of the components requiring a revision of the total number of 1,488 prima

BACKGROUND: It remains controversial whether hip arthroscopic surgery should be applied to patients with a borderline developmental dysplastic hip (BDDH).
PURPOSE: To review the outcomes of hip arthroscopic surgery for a BDDH and which factors influence these outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched through March 2018 for studies reporting the outcomes of primary hip arthroscopic surgery in patients with a BDDH. Inclusion in the review was based on the definition of a BDDH, patient-reported outcomes, and duration of follow-up

INTRODUCTION: A wide variety of stems have been used for the treatment of osteoarthritis secondary to advanced hip dysplasia. Since evidence for using short stems in dysplastic hips is limited, we planned to analyse the technical problems encountered when reconstructing the proximal femur of patients with osteoarthritis secondary to congenital dysplasia of the hip treated with total hip arthroplasty (THA) using a type 2B short stem.
METHODS: We prospectively analysed 17 patients (22 hips) treated with primary THA performed with a single-branded short uncemented stem with metaphyseal fixation

Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic multisystem inflammatory disease most prevalent in Eastern Asia and along the Mediterranean basin, an area referred to as the 'Silk Road'. The diagnosis of BD is largely based on the International Study Group (ISG) criteria, which are more specific than sensitive. ISG criteria do not include intestinal manifestations, a feature more commonly seen in the West. Intestinal BD is one of several findings that are not typically seen along the 'Silk Road'. Herein we report a rare case of intestinal BD and compare Western versus traditional BD. A 25-year-old male wit

INTRODUCTION: Resurfacing as a percentage of total hip arthroplasty rose from 5.6 % in 2001 to 8.9 % in 2005 in Australia. During the same period the resurfacing to conventional prosthesis rose from 19.6 % to 29 % in the younger age group (less than 55 years). Long term (more than ten years) functional results of BHR are sparingly documented. Among the literatures available, the patient selection criteria vary from osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, and dysplastic hip to slipped capital femoral epiphysis. The objective of the current study is to evaluate long term survivorship and functional

PURPOSE: Automatic segmentation of anatomical structures and lesions from medical ultrasound images is a formidable challenge in medical imaging due to image noise, blur and artifacts. In this paper we present a segmentation technique with features highly suited to use in noisy 3D ultrasound volumes and demonstrate its use in modeling bone, specifically the acetabulum in infant hips. Quantification of the acetabular shape is crucial in diagnosing developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), a common condition associated with hip dislocation and premature osteoarthritis if not treated. The well-es

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Rotational acetabular osteotomy (RAO) is a joint-conserving surgery in which femoral head coverage is improved using autologous cartilage to stabilize the joint. For advanced coxarthrosis, it has been reported that radical surgery should be selected, compared to the pre- and early stages. The objective of this study was to determine the clinical outcomes of patients in whom coxarthrosis progressed after RAO and came to undergo total hip arthroplasty (THA).
METHODS: We compared 24 total hip arthroplasties done in dysplastic hips after previous rotational acetabular osteotom

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY In view of increasing interest in a relationship between the surface of an implant and its behaviour and longevity in total hip arthroplasty (THA), the aim of this study is to present the clinical and radiographic results, as well as complications, of hip replacement surgery using the cemented femoral stem SAS I. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 298 cemented femoral stems SAS I were implanted in 275 patients at our department between 1996 and 2005. The patient average age was 72.1 years, with the range from 64 to 92 years. The pre-operative diagnoses were as follows: primar

The treatment of young adult hip disorders, including hip dysplasia, has evolved significantly in the last decade. The association of hip dysplasia with hip osteoarthritis is well accepted, but remains based on basic radiographic parameters. Our understanding of the complexity and variability of hip dysplasia continues to evolve. As the clinical presentation of mild and borderline acetabular dysplasia is very similar to that of other young adult hip disorders, such as femoroacetabular impingement, a thorough history, physical examination, and radiographic evaluation are important to properly d

Curved periacetabular osteotomy (CPO) was developed for the treatment of dysplastic hips in 1995. In CPO, the exposure of osteotomy sites and osteotomy of the ischium are made in the same manner as Bernese periacetabular osteotomy, and iliac and pubic osteotomies are performed in the same manner as rotational acetabular osteotomy. We studied the dynamic instabilities of 25 dysplastic hips before and after CPO using triaxial accelerometry. Overall magnitude of acceleration was significantly decreased from 2.30 ± 0.57 m/sec(2) preoperatively to 1.55 ± 0.31 m/sec(2) postoperatively. Pain relief a

Canine hip dysplasia (CHD) is a common musculoskeletal disease in pedigree dog populations. It can cause severe pain and dysfunction which may require extensive medication and/or surgical treatment and often ultimately requires humane euthanasia. CHD has been found to be moderately heritable and, given its impact on welfare, should be considered an imperative breeding priority. The British Veterinary Association/Kennel Club scoring method is one of several measures used to assess the genetic propensity of potential breeding stock for dysplastic changes to the hips based on radiographic examina

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a mutation in the fibrillin 2 gene (FBN2) is associated with canine hip dysplasia (CHD) and osteoarthritis in dogs.
ANIMALS: 1,551 dogs. Procedures-Hip conformation was measured radiographically. The FBN2 was sequenced from genomic DNA of 21 Labrador Retrievers and 2 Greyhounds, and a haplotype in intron 30 of FBN2 was sequenced in 90 additional Labrador Retrievers and 143 dogs of 6 other breeds. Steady-state values of FBN2 mRNA and control genes were measured in hip joint tissues of fourteen 8-month-old Labrador Retriever-Greyhound crossbreeds.
RESULTS: The L

BACKGROUND: Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) is one of the more common generalised skeletal dysplasias. Due to its clinical heterogeneity diagnosis may be difficult. Mutations of at least six separate genes can cause MED. Joint deformities, joint pain and gait disorders are common symptoms.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report on a 27-year-old male patient suffering from clinical symptoms of autosomal recessive MED with habitual dislocation of a multilayered patella on both sides, on the surgical treatment and on short-term clinical outcome. Clinical findings were: bilateral hip and knee pain, ins

INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis lesions extent and dysplasia severity (negative vertical center edge [CE] angle) are recognized as unfavorable criteria for the survival of shelf arthroplasties performed for correcting hip dysplasia. Labral tears have recently been described on dysplastic hips, indicating beginning osteoarthritis and worsening the risk of instability.
HYPOTHESIS: The labral tears identified in the course of shelf arthroplasty procedures for correction of hip dysplasia carry a predictive value for the survival of this operation.
OBJECTIVES: Evaluate this hypothesis at the interme

We evaluated 31 patients with bilateral dysplastic hips who had undergone periacetabular osteotomy for early (Tönnis grade 0 or 1) or moderate (Tönnis grade 2) osteoarthritis in one hip and total hip replacement for advanced (Tönnis grade 3) osteoarthritis in the other. At a mean follow-up of 5.5 years (2 to 9) after periacetabular osteotomy and 6.7 years (3 to 10) after total hip replacement, there was no difference in the functional outcome in hips undergoing osteotomy for early or moderate osteoarthritis and those with a total hip replacement, as determined by the Merle d'Aubigné and Postel

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate a possible relation between congenital hip dysplasia and acetabular retroversion and to explore the eventual influence of the latter in the surgical decision for periacetabular osteotomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assessed the classical morphological characteristics of both hips, with an additional newly described retroversion index. The study was conducted in 174 patients with uni- or bilateral congenital hip dysplasia having undergone unilateral (153 patients) or bilateral (21 patients) periacetabular osteotomy when respectively one

The typical dysplastic hip joint is characterised by maldirection of the acetabulum and femoral neck, insufficient coverage of the femoral head focally and globally and erosions of the limbus acetabuli (1). An unknown number of persons with hip dysplasia will suffer from pain in hip or groin, decreased hip function and development of osteoarthritis at a young age. The Bernese periacetabular osteotomy is performed to prevent osteoarthritis in patients with hip dysplasia and has been carried out at Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark since 1996 with more than 500 osteotomies performed.
