Robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty in extra-articular post-traumatic deformities: A case series with one-year outcomes.

PurposeExtra-articular femoral or tibial malunion can distort anatomical landmarks, compromise the reliability of conventional alignment guides, and complicate total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Robotic-assisted TKA (RA-TKA) may improve the precision and reproducibility of bone preparation and component positioning in these anatomically challenging cases. This study reports one-year clinical and radiographic outcomes after single-stage RA-TKA performed without corrective osteotomy in patients with post-traumatic extra-articular deformities.MethodsThis retrospective case series included nine patien

Hip resurfacing arthroplasty at a minimum of 14 years: revision is concentrated among female patients with dysplasia and small components.

INTRODUCTION: Hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) is a bone-preserving option for young, active patients. The influence of the underlying diagnosis on long-term outcome remains unclear, particularly the distinction between primary osteoarthritis (OA), developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and non-OA conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 104 consecutive metal-on-metal HRAs in 101 patients (three bilateral) performed by one surgeon between 2006 and 2011, stratified into Primary OA (n = 50), DDH (n = 29) and Non-OA (n = 25: avascular necrosis [AVN] n = 15, inflammatory

Impact of Supine, Standing, and Sitting Postures on Acetabular Component Orientation in Total Hip Arthroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a highly effective surgical procedure aimed at relieving pain and restoring function in patients with severe hip joint disorders, such as osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis, and developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). The primary goals of THA are to alleviate pain, improve joint function, and enhance the quality of life by providing a stable and well-functioning hip joint. Accurate orientation of the acetabular component is critical for the success of THA, ensuring optimal joint mechanics, reducing the risk of complications such as dislocation and wea

Traumatic Bilateral Asymmetrical Hip Dislocation with Acetabular Fracture: A Case Report and Review of Current Evidence.

Bilateral asymmetrical hip dislocations are rare, occurring in only 0.01-0.02% of all joint dislocations, typically following high-energy trauma. We present a 22-year-old male involved in a high-speed motor vehicle collision, sustaining a right posterior hip dislocation with an associated posterior wall acetabular fracture and a left obturator-type anterior dislocation. He underwent successful closed reduction within two hours post-injury, but due to persistent instability of the posterior acetabular wall fracture, open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) via a Kocher-Langenbeck approach wa

Enhanced mobility and pain relief of total hip arthroplasty in post-traumatic ankylosing hip: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ankylosed hips pose significant challenges due to severe joint stiffness and deformities. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a critical intervention that offers pain relief and improved function, despite the technical difficulties associated with altered biomechanics and preoperative deformities. This abstract highlights the complexities of THA in Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) patients, emphasizing the need for specialized surgical approaches to optimize outcomes and mitigate the higher risk of complications. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old male presented with pain an

Congenital Absence of Bilateral Patella in an Active Military Personnel Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Bilateral anterior hip dislocations are exceedingly rare, accounting for only 2-5% of all traumatic hip dislocations. They typically result from high-energy trauma, with most cases reported in road traffic accidents. Early reduction is crucial to minimize complications such as avascular necrosis, irreducibility, and post-traumatic osteoarthritis. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 32-year-old male who sustained bilateral anterior hip dislocations, pubic type on the right and obturator type on the left, following a high-energy trauma involving a fall astride a roadside ravine.

Traumatic bilateral acetabular fracture secondary to high-energy trauma in healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral acetabular fracture is a very rare presentation among the trauma patients, as the pattern and the degree of the forces required to fracture both acetabula is very unique. The primary purpose of this study is to report a series of adult patients presenting with post-traumatic bilateral acetabular fracture without any history of pathological or metabolic bone disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, 18 cases of traumatic bilateral acetabular fracture were included. There was predominance of both column (four patients on left and six on right) followed by

Simultaneous asymmetrical bilateral hip dislocations - A report of three cases with different presentations and management.

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous traumatic dislocation of both the hips in an individual is an uncommon injury. It accounts for only 1-2% of all traumatic hip dislocations. Simultaneous traumatic dislocation of both the hips in opposite directions i.e., anterior dislocation of one hip and posterior of the other is even rarer. These asymmetric dislocations need prompt identification for appropriate management. While their management should proceed in a manner commensurate with the accepted management of isolated dislocations to avoid complications, it is the timely identification which is essential. S

Sequential complex bilateral total hip arthroplasty in neglected acetabular fractures - A case report.

Severe cases of acetabular fractures are complicated, leading to further damage to the femoral head and post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). These adverse events eventually lead to complexities in the management of patients with the aforementioned conditions. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a surgical option for improving both stability and functionality, and for controlling pain in patients with PTOA. Herein, we report the case of a 70-year-old male patient with neglected bilateral acetabular fracture who presented with PTOA and protrusion. Despite significant limb-length discrepancy with th

Results of 200 Consecutive Ceramic-on-Ceramic Cementless Hip Arthroplasties in Patients Up To 50 Years of Age: A 5-24 Years of Follow-Up Study.

BACKGROUND: Ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) bearings due to their mechanical properties can be used in primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) especially in young patients requiring a long-lasting implant. The goal of this study is to analyze the results of a series of 200 consecutive CoC THAs in patients aged 50 years or less at the time of surgery. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on the first 200 consecutive CoC arthroplasties performed using the direct lateral approach on 105 females and 81 males (14 bilateral cases) with an average age of 44.2 (16-50) years. The diagnosis was primary o

Long-term results of the GSB III elbow arthroplasty.

Between 1978 and 1986, 59 patients received a GSB III elbow prosthesis, six of them in both elbows. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was the underlying cause in 51 of the patients and post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) in eight. Of these, 24 patients (28 prostheses) have since died; two, both operated on bilaterally, had had their implants for more than ten years and had already been assessed for inclusion in the long-term follow-up. Two patients, each with one elbow prosthesis, have been lost to follow-up and three males who are still living (two with PTOA, one with juvenile RA) had their prosthes

Survival of patients and prostheses after total hip arthroplasty.

The survival statistics of 695 patients who had 803 total hip arthroplasties (THA) were correlated with the incidence of aseptic loosening using standard actuarial methods. Follow-up periods ranged from three to 11 years. High patient mortality was associated with factors that lower physical fitness: old age, bilateral hip disease, excessive obesity, diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, and post-traumatic changes. Patients in whom revision procedures were done due to prosthetic failure experienced a very low mortality. The factors associated with aseptic loosening were unilateral hip disease, de
