Durom hip resurfacing at 15 years : predictive factors for failure.

AIMS: A range of metal-on-metal hip resurfacing (MoM-HR) implants have shown good functional outcomes, but some have been associated with adverse reactions to metal debris (ARMD) and early failure, requiring regular follow-up and monitoring of the blood metal ion levels. The aim of this study was to report the minimum 15-year survival of the Durom hip resurfacing system (Zimmer Biomet, USA), the functional outcome, and factors which were predictive of failure. METHODS: A consecutive series of patients undergoing Durom MoM-HR at a single centre between January 2000 and December 2008 were inclu

Medial Meniscus Root Tears: Management With Single-Tunnel Repair and Meniscus Centralization.

Background Meniscus root tears (MRTs) are radial tears located near the anterior or posterior meniscotibial attachment, which are often underdiagnosed and associated with accelerated knee osteoarthritis (OA). Medial meniscus posterior root tears (MMPRTs), frequently observed in middle-aged women, lead to altered knee biomechanics and joint degeneration if untreated. While historically managed with meniscectomy, the modern approach emphasizes arthroscopic repair to restore joint stability and delay OA progression. Objective This study evaluates the clinical outcomes of single-tunnel root repair

Preliminary Report on the Time-Related Effect of a Single Autologous Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Injection in Hip Osteoarthritis: A Retrospective Observational Study.

Background: Recently, intra-articular injection of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) had been proposed as a conservative treatment for hip osteoarthritis (HOA). Adipose tissue was demonstrated as a viable source of MSCs because of the high concentration of cells and the easy access to the donor site. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the time-related results of a single intra-articular injection of autologous adipose-derived stem cells (aASCs) in a series of patients with HOA. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 30 patients with HOA, who underwent an intra-articular injection o

Impact of an in-consult patient decision aid on decisional quality, involvement, and health outcome for patients with severe hip or knee osteoarthritis - a study protocol for a multicentre, cluster randomised controlled trial (PATI-study).

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a joint disease with a high worldwide prevalence, often leading to replacement surgery. However, despite the high success rate of replacement surgery, some patients fail to experience the intended benefits. Given the importance of patient involvement, this trial aims to assess the effect of shared decision-making (SDM) on decisional quality for patients with severe OA. Specifically, it investigates whether an in-consult patient decision aid (PtDA) enhances decisional quality, involvement, and health outcomes for patients with severe hip or knee OA. METHODS:

Impact of estrogen replacement therapy on outcomes following total shoulder arthroplasty: a propensity-matched retrospective cohort study of 1,779 patients.

BACKGROUND: While estrogen is essential for bone remodeling, its impact on joint health is more nuanced. Previous studies suggest that high estrogen states, including those induced by estrogen replacement therapy (ERT), are associated with osteoarthritis and an increased risk of revisions after hip and/or knee arthroplasty. Given the rise in total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) cases, it is important to investigate factors that may impact its outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate whether ERT use impacts TSA outcomes at 2, 4, and 10 years postoperatively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retros

Extensive Synovial Osteochondromatosis Secondary to Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head: A Case of Multifocal Extra-articular Involvement.

Synovial osteochondromatosis (SOC) is an uncommon benign disorder of synovial metaplasia, characterized by cartilaginous or osseous loose bodies within the joint, bursa, or tendon sheath. We report a case of a 40-year-old female who presented initially with hip pain and limitation of motion on her right side. Imaging revealed avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head along with depicted early SOC. The patient had significant symptom relief with conservative management. However, at follow-up, imaging consistently demonstrated significant progression of SOC with numerous calcified loose bodie

Indications for Acetabular and Femoral Osteotomies for the Non-Arthritic Hip.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The goal of this review is to explore the role of acetabular and femoral osteotomies in the treatment of hip dysplasia and femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). We aim to answer key questions regarding the indications and outcomes associated with these procedures in managing both conditions. Hip dysplasia and FAI are often interrelated, with joint malalignment contributing to the development of pain, dysfunction, and early osteoarthritis. Acetabular and femoral osteotomies have been shown to restore proper alignment, alleviate symptoms, and delay the need for joint replacement

Intraosseous Bone Marrow Concentrate for Hip Osteoarthritis: A Case Series.

Hip osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent cause of pain and disability in the US, with continued progression often necessitating total hip replacement surgery. However, postoperative complications and persistent pain can occur, compelling the need for alternative long-term management strategies. Advances in orthobiologics, such as bone marrow concentrate (BMC) injections, offer a non-surgical alternative for hip OA treatment that can facilitate pain management and disease modification. Recent case studies show significant improvement in pain, function, and quality of life following intra-articula
