Meniscectomy-induced osteoarthritis in the sheep model for the investigation of therapeutic strategies: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: One of the major risk factors for OA is meniscectomy (Mx) that causes a rapid and progressive OA. Mx has been employed in various animal models, especially in large ones, to study preclinical safety and strategy effectiveness to counteract OA. The aim of the present study is to review in vivo studies, performed in sheep and published in the last ten years. METHODS: The search strategy was performed in three websites: www.scopus.com, www.pubmed.com, and www.webofknowledge.com, using "Meniscectomy and osteoarthritis in sheep" keywords. RESULTS: The 25 included studies performed unilat

Early chondral damage following meniscus repairs with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Meniscal tears are commonly observed in patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. Meniscal repair has become a common procedure for the injured meniscus, and good clinical outcomes have been reported in such cases when used concurrently with ACL reconstruction. However, it is unclear whether early chondral damage progression can be prevented following meniscal repair with ACL reconstruction, as meniscal damage is a potential risk factor for the development of osteoarthritis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the zone-specific chondral damage that occurs after

[Contraction of the tensor fasciae latae muscle of the fascia of the broad thigh and flexion of the knee joint in the runners].

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: The illustration of the ranges of bending the limb during the outflow allowed to divide the study group into two parts. In the majority of respondents, the initial flexion prevailed over the final one. The researchers focused on finding the reasons for the advantage of the final bend over the initial one in 30% of the subjects. The aim: The analysis of the dynamic stride under the control of the MVN Biomech system in the bending of the knee joint of the lateral limb, comparing the preparation to the leg (initial bending) and its ending (final). PATIENTS AND METHODS: M

Manipulation under anesthesia for post traumatic stiff knee-pearls, pitfalls and risk factors for failure.

BACKGROUND: Stiffness is common following fractures around knee. Manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) is the initial noninvasive procedure usually performed for such patients. Though MUA has been extensively evaluated for knee arthroplasty, there is paucity of literature regarding its benefits in trauma cases. The purpose of this study was to define the role of manipulation in post traumatic stiff knees. METHODS: Hospital inpatient and outpatient records from January 2010 to June 2014 were retrospectively reviewed to identify patients undergoing MUA at our institution. Patients with more than

RNAi Silencing of IL-1β and TNF-α in the Treatment of Post-traumatic Arthritis in Rabbits.

Post-traumatic arthritis is a secondary complication to severe joint trauma. With the disease progression, it may eventually lead to osteoarthritis in patients whose age is considerably younger than patients with traditional bone arthritis. The main objective of this study was to explore the feasibility of using lentiviral-mediated RNA interference silencing of IL-1β and TNF-α to treat post-traumatic arthritis in rabbits. About 48 New Zealand rabbits underwent bilateral knee joint surgery to stimulate traumatic arthritis. They were then randomly divided into four groups of 12 rabbits each. The

Implementation of a gait cycle loading into healthy and meniscectomised knee joint models with fibril-reinforced articular cartilage.

Computational models can be used to evaluate the functional properties of knee joints and possible risk locations within joints. Current models with fibril-reinforced cartilage layers do not provide information about realistic human movement during walking. This study aimed to evaluate stresses and strains within a knee joint by implementing load data from a gait cycle in healthy and meniscectomised knee joint models with fibril-reinforced cartilages. A 3D finite element model of a knee joint with cartilages and menisci was created from magnetic resonance images. The gait cycle data from varyi

Total knee arthroplasty in osteogenesis imperfecta: case report.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare congenital disorder of type capital I, Ukrainian collagen production that results in brittle bones and affects body systems containing collagen. The increasing life span of patients with OI has recently revealed a high incidence of osteoarthritis of the knee. A 53 year-old man with OI presented with bilateral knee pain. He had severe deformities of the proximal part of the femur with subsegment post-traumatic osteoarthritis of both sides of the knees. However, the frequency of fracture gradually decreased and he had not experienced a fracture for 17 years

[Fracture of the tibial head].

Fractures of the tibial head are severe injuries, characterized by enormous variety. Fractures can be classified into fractures of the tibial plateau, luxation fractures, and comminuted fractures. Due to the mechanism of injury luxation fractures are frequently associated with lesions of the menisci and intra- and extra-articular ligaments. Multiple factors can be etiologic for post-traumatic gonarthrosis: nonanatomic reduction of the joint surface, malalignment, and unaddressed associated injuries. Therefore in addition to diagnostic steps such as X-ray, CT scan, and MRI a sophisticated thera

Effects of ligament repair on laxity and creep behavior of an early healing ligament scar.

BACKGROUND: Previous clinical studies have reported that conservatively managed medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries remained unstable 9 years post injury with subjective complaints of muscle weakness, reinjuries, and post-traumatic osteoarthritis. Animal studies have also reported that healing MCLs were weaker and more lax than controls. Therefore, our purpose was to study the early effects of ligament repair on scar laxity, creep, and creep recovery in a rabbit model of bilateral medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury. METHODS: Each rabbit had one MCL cut in midsubstance which was not

Long-term results following ankle arthrodesis for post-traumatic arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Ankle arthrodesis is considered by many to be the standard operative treatment for end-stage ankle arthritis; however, the long-term effect of ankle arthrodesis on other lower-extremity joints remains largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to perform a clinical and radiographic review to determine the effect of ankle arthrodesis on the development of osteoarthritis in other lower-extremity joints. METHODS: Twenty-three patients who had had an isolated ankle arthrodesis for the treatment of painful posttraumatic arthritis of the ankle were followed for a mean of twenty-two

Long-term results of the GSB III elbow arthroplasty.

Between 1978 and 1986, 59 patients received a GSB III elbow prosthesis, six of them in both elbows. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was the underlying cause in 51 of the patients and post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) in eight. Of these, 24 patients (28 prostheses) have since died; two, both operated on bilaterally, had had their implants for more than ten years and had already been assessed for inclusion in the long-term follow-up. Two patients, each with one elbow prosthesis, have been lost to follow-up and three males who are still living (two with PTOA, one with juvenile RA) had their prosthes
